Chapter 27 - The Error That Should Not Exist

Chapter 27 — The Error That Should Not Exist

The attack should have landed.

It didn't.

For the first time—

certainty failed.

The Enforcer stood still for a fraction of a second.

A moment that should not exist.

A moment that Aren created.

"…Impossible," it repeated.

Aren stepped forward slowly.

His eyes were calm.

Too calm.

THUMP.

That second heartbeat echoed again.

Louder.

Closer.

More… present.

"…You felt that, didn't you?" Aren said quietly.

The Enforcer didn't answer.

But its stance changed.

More cautious.

Less certain.

Behind him—

three more distortions stabilized.

The other Enforcers fully emerged.

Four.

Perfect formations.

Perfect synchronization.

Perfect control.

But Aren…

was not perfect.

And that was the problem.

[WARNING: MULTIPLE HOSTILE ENTITIES CONFIRMED]

[CONTRACT INTEGRITY: 61%]

"…Still holding," Aren muttered.

"…Not for long."

The voice inside him whispered.

Aren ignored it.

For now.

The first Enforcer moved again.

Faster.

Sharper.

More precise.

But this time—

Aren didn't dodge.

He raised his hand.

The air around it trembled.

Not violently.

Not fully.

But enough.

"…Let's test something," he said.

The attack reached him—

And then—

stopped.

Not blocked.

Not deflected.

Stopped.

Like reality itself refused to continue the motion.

The Enforcer froze.

Its arm suspended mid-strike.

Its system… interrupted.

"…Error," Aren whispered.

The word spread.

Not as sound.

But as function.

The world flickered.

[ERROR DETECTED]

The system reacted instantly.

[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED INTERFERENCE]

[ATTEMPTING CORRECTION…]

But it failed.

For a brief moment—

Aren overrode it.

The Enforcer's arm twitched—

then dropped.

"…Processing failure," it said.

Aren's eyes darkened slightly.

"…No," he replied.

"…You're being rewritten."

The other three Enforcers moved at once.

Perfect coordination.

Three attacks—

from three different angles.

Aren stepped back—

just enough—

but not fast enough.

One strike grazed his shoulder.

Blood.

Real.

Pain followed instantly.

"Ghh—!"

His body staggered.

The control broke for a second.

The frozen Enforcer recovered.

"…Adaptation required."

Aren clenched his teeth.

"…So you learn."

The system flickered again.

[CONTRACT INTEGRITY: 54%]

[HOST CONDITION: DAMAGED]

"…You're still weak."

The voice inside him said calmly.

"…Not yet," Aren replied.

The air grew heavier.

THUMP.

Stronger.

The second heartbeat no longer felt separate.

It felt closer to merging.

"…Stop holding back," the voice whispered.

Aren's hand tightened.

"…If I do that," he muttered.

"…Everything breaks."

"…Good."

Silence.

The Enforcers attacked again.

This time—

faster.

More aggressive.

Less perfect.

More desperate.

Because now—

they understood something.

He was not predictable.

Aren moved.

Not like before.

Not precise.

Not controlled.

Different.

His body reacted before his mind.

His perception fractured into multiple layers.

He saw—

angles.

possibilities.

outcomes.

Too many.

"…This is…" he whispered.

[WARNING: PERCEPTION OVERLOAD]

The world slowed—

but his thoughts accelerated.

The Enforcers became patterns.

Not enemies.

Patterns.

"…So this is your level," Aren said quietly.

One step.

The first Enforcer missed.

Second step.

The second attack bent—

slightly—

unnaturally—

Third step—

Aren disappeared.

For a split second—

he was gone.

Then—

he appeared behind them.

"…Error correction," he said.

The words carried something new.

Authority.

The system screamed.

[CRITICAL ERROR]

[UNAUTHORIZED COMMAND DETECTED]

The ground cracked.

The sky flickered violently.

The contract—

began to collapse.

The Enforcers froze again.

Not by force.

By confusion.

"…You are not authorized," one said.

Aren tilted his head slightly.

"…And you think that matters?"

The air distorted.

Not lightly.

Not partially.

Deeply.

Reality itself hesitated.

THUMP.

The second heartbeat aligned with his own.

For a moment—

they became one.

The voice inside him spoke again.

"…Now you understand."

Aren's eyes changed.

Darker.

Sharper.

Colder.

"…No," he said quietly.

"…Now I decide."

The distortion exploded outward—

And the contract—

finally cracked.
