Chapter 32 - Anthony: Metaphysical Chumming, Metaphysical Haul!

Supplemental update.

Anthony sat on his bronze throne — the one that had, until very recently, been a perfectly ordinary toilet — watching the float bob on the iridescent surface of the Primordial River, sweating bullets.

Something was wrong. He could feel it.

This is bad. This is really, really bad.

The odds of fishing up an Arrow were, apparently, astronomically — almost insultingly — low.

After six straight hours of casting, during which he had reeled in nothing but a spectacular pile of fashionable junk, Anthony arrived at this conclusion with crystalline clarity.

It wasn't that [Angler's Bronze Throne] was weak — if anything, it was already doing serious work. It had successfully cut his average fishing time down to roughly twenty minutes per cast. And the boost to rare item drop rates? Completely real.

The problem was that the base drop rate for something like an Arrow was so low it barely registered as a number.

Anthony had gone back and looked at the probability table again. At Affinity Bond Level 6, the base chance of reeling in an Arrow-class item was less than 0.1%. With [Angler's Bronze Throne]'s bonus stacked on top, it had been heroically doubled — all the way up to 0.2%.

Which was, functionally, the same as gacha hell. Betting on a 0.2% pull? Anthony was genuinely starting to wonder if he'd be sitting here fishing for several more months before anything bit.

[Angler's Bronze Throne] was already pulling its weight. It was just that, for the next time he wanted to gamble on a rare drop, he really ought to wait until [Angler's Iron Throne] — until there was a pity mechanism in place before he tried again.

As for this round...

It was a matter of an angler's dignity. Anthony absolutely could not leave here empty-handed. He refused. He would fish up that Arrow, or he would die trying.

No skunking. Not today.

With that thought firmly cemented, Anthony's eyes hardened with renewed resolve, a sharp glint settling across his expression.

He let out a long breath and leaned back against the tank of his bronze throne, keeping one corner of his attention fixed on the float while redirecting his gaze into the chat group.

Let's see what everyone's up to. Consider it a pre-fishing ritual. Good luck prep.

After scrolling through for a while, Anthony found messages from both Himmel and Yoriichi Tsugikuni. Both of them had finished reading through the files he'd sent, and both had forwarded their resurrection conditions.

Anthony gave Himmel's resurrection requirements a quick scan — and immediately arrived at a verdict.

Hopeless.

Just like his own conditions, and Jie's, and Carmen's — Himmel's resurrection requirements were wall-to-wall question marks. Plain as day: Himmel was going to join the three of them and become the fourth member of the Unknown Resurrection Conditions Club.

No hope of resurrecting Himmel any time soon. That said, Anthony could at least use [The Angler] to funnel some lifespan his way in the meantime. On one hand, it would help him pin down exactly what year it was in the Sinseoki era. On the other, it would raise his Affinity Bond with that world — because Frieren: Beyond Journey's End definitely had a few things Anthony had his eye on.

Himmel's situation was grim. But Yoriichi Tsugikuni's? Yoriichi's was looking extremely bright.

Fifty thousand Points and one physical body. You won't be cheated, you won't be scammed.

Resurrection conditions almost as clean and simple as Jonathan's. Reading them, Anthony couldn't help but feel a genuine wave of appreciation for how reasonable they were.

Those requirements were even cheaper — by a meaningful margin — than what David had needed.

As for why... probably because Demon Slayer did actually have reincarnation as a concept baked in, which made the whole process comparatively straightforward.

Barring any surprises, the next person to be resurrected in the group was very likely going to be Yoriichi Tsugikuni.

Anthony turned that thought over quietly in his mind, then pinched off a small fragment of soul energy and tossed it into the Primordial River — his pre-fishing ritual, such as it was. At the same moment, he noticed a new mention notification blinking in the chat group.

[Founder of the Golden Spirit: @Lord of the White Holy Throne — things on the family side have settled down for now. It took some time, but I managed to get them to accept the fact that I'm back.]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: Good news. What's the plan going forward?]

[Founder of the Golden Spirit: Given that we already have intel, I'm going to move directly on recovering the remaining Arrows. If possible, I'd like to use the chat group to destroy them outright.]

Anthony had no objections to that. By the time Jonathan finished rounding up the Arrows, Anthony would have reeled one in himself — no matter how bad his luck turned out to be.

[Founder of the Golden Spirit: Once the Arrows have been collected, I'd like to transfer the Points earned to you, as thanks for your assistance.]

[Founder of the Golden Spirit: Please don't refuse. Honestly, given the scale of what you did, this reward barely does it justice.]

Anthony stared at Jonathan's messages for a long moment. After a beat, he let out a slightly resigned sigh and typed out his acceptance.

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: ...Then I'll gratefully accept. Go handle your business — I'm in the middle of something over here too.]

[AAA City Female Ghost: What are you in the middle of? You've been offline for hours.]

Carmen's curious voice cut in out of nowhere.

Anthony looked at the soul energy fragment he'd just pinched off — and the small amount of it now sinking into the Primordial River. He was silent for a moment, then typed.

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: Chumming the water.]

[AAA City Female Ghost: ?]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: You wouldn't get it. Just think of it as some kind of mysterious ritual offering. Mysticism saves the unlucky.]

[Let Night City Burn: Keep at it, Mr. Anthony.]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: See? David knows how to be supportive.]

[AAA City Female Ghost: Sometimes I genuinely don't know what to do with you...]

[AAA City Female Ghost: By the way — the main storyline still hasn't dropped a new mission yet?]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: Should be releasing in a little while. Hang tight. According to the chat group, there should also be some additional new features coming with it.]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: Though the next main mission itself probably won't be related to those new features.]

[AAA City Female Ghost: So that means... we need to figure out how to resurrect another person?]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: In theory, yes. And looking at the current conditions, the one closest to resurrection is probably Yoriichi.]

[Wordsmith of the Great Yan: Mm... let's focus on getting the easier ones back first. Yoriichi first, then David next, right?]

[Lord of the White Holy Throne: More or less... hang on, I think something's on the line —]

Anthony had barely finished typing when, before he could even close the chat group, the fishing rod in his hands erupted into violent, lurching vibration.

A kind of violent pull he had never felt before. Not once in six hours of casting.

Wait — holy shit — does mystical chumming actually work?!

That is unmistakably a massive bite!

For one split second, Anthony's brain went completely blank. Then, before the thought had even finished forming, his body moved on pure angler's instinct — both hands slamming onto the rod, hauling back with everything he had.

In that instant, a dazzling streak of chiseled gold light blazed across the white shaft of the fishing rod.

And then — when Anthony's eyes landed on what had come up on the hook, its intricate engravings and delicate latticed lacework unmistakable even from a distance — his breath stopped entirely.

"Holy shit, I got one!"

"I fished up an Arrow! I can use a Stand now!"
