Chapter 9 - The Moment She Left

The rain was back.

Not just around her—

it was inside her head.

Loud as hell.

Relentless.

She stood frozen, right there.

But the present was fading fast.

Slipping away.

Replaced by something stronger, something she couldn't keep buried anymore.

That night.

Clear as day now.

Too damn clear.

Rain coming down in sheets.

Cold. Heavy.

The road was deserted—

except for two people.

Her.

And someone else.

"You can't just walk away like this," a voice cut through the air.

Sharp, like a knife. Hurt.

Familiar as her own heartbeat.

"I already am," she heard herself say.

Calm.

Way too calm.

The memory didn't feel like a movie anymore.

It felt like she was right back there.

Every word hanging in the air.

Every breath she took.

Real.

"You promised."

The other voice cracked a little.

Not angry anymore.

Just… desperate, you know?

Silence.

And then—

"I didn't mean it."

The words hit harder than the rain ever could.

Even now, they echoed in her head.

A step back.

Not her step.

The other person, backing away.

Unsteady on their feet.

The ground slick with rain.

"Wait—"

But it was too late.

A slip.

A fall.

A sound she could never forget—

even when she tried to block it out.

Everything went silent.

The rain.

The voices.

The whole damn world.

The figure didn't move.

Her heart hammered in her chest in the memory.

Fast. Loud.

Panicked.

She took a step forward.

Just one.

Close enough to see everything.

Close enough to know—

this was a big deal.

This was everything.

"Get up…" she whispered.

But the body stayed still.

And that's when it all changed.

The moment that defined everything.

The moment everything went to hell.

She looked all around.

Empty road.

Nobody in sight.

Nobody watching.

Her breath came in ragged gasps.

Her thoughts screaming louder than the storm.

This isn't your fault.

It was an accident.

You didn't do anything wrong.

She took a step back.

Slowly.

Like she was walking on eggshells.

One step.

Then another.

And then—

she turned and ran.

She bailed.

The memory shattered around her.

She stumbled back into the present, gasping for air.

"No…"

But she couldn't deny it anymore.

No more gaps.

No more missing pieces to hide behind.

Her hands shook as she looked down at the broken phone.

It wasn't just a phone anymore.

It was evidence.

A witness.

The cold, hard truth.

Tears welled up in her eyes.

Not loud, sobbing tears.

Not some dramatic display.

Just quiet tears—

like everything else she tried to keep hidden.

"I didn't mean to…" she whispered.

But the words sounded hollow, even to her.

Too late for apologies now.

Because what you meant to do doesn't change what you did.

And keeping quiet doesn't erase the truth.

For days, she told herself she'd forgotten.

But she hadn't forgotten.

She'd made a choice not to remember.

And now—

there was nowhere left to run.
