Chapter 7 - Chapter Seven: The Way He Looked At Her

After that night in the rain, something changed between them.

Not openly. Not in words.

But in the quiet spaces.

In the way Adrian looked at her a second longer than before. In the way Lila noticed when he entered a room-even before she saw him.

And the most dangerous part?

Neither of them pretended it wasn't happening anymore.

One afternoon, they were working in the conference room when Lila began to feel restless.

She couldn't focus on the script.

Her mind kept drifting... to him.

To the way he listened when she spoke. To the calm way he moved. To the quiet warmth in his voice when he said her name.

"Lila."

She looked up.

He was watching her.

"You've been staring at the same line for five minutes," he said gently.

She sighed and leaned back in her chair. "I'm tired."

He studied her face for a moment.

Not intrusively. Just... carefully.

"Come," he said.

She frowned. "Come where?"

"Just come."

They stepped outside the building.

The late afternoon sun was soft, the air warm but not hot. The city noise felt distant somehow, like the world had slowed down just a little.

Adrian handed her something.

An ice cream.

She blinked in surprise.

"You disappeared for this?" she asked.

"Yes."

She laughed quietly. "You're strange."

"You're strange."

"I've been called worse."

She took it, still smiling.

And for a moment, they stood there, eating ice cream like two people who had nowhere to rush to.

No pressure. No expectations.

Just quiet company.

"You look different when you laugh," Adrian said suddenly.

She glanced at him. "Different how?"

"Younger," he said. "Lighter."

Her smile faded slightly.

"I'm not used to being light," she admitted.

"I know," he said softly.

That answer lingered between them.

A gentle breeze moved a strand of hair across her face.

Without thinking, Adrian reached out and gently brushed it away.

The movement was slow… careful… giving her time to pull back if she wanted to.

She didn't.

Her breath caught slightly.

His fingers barely touched her skin, but it felt like electricity.

And when his hand dropped, the air between them felt warmer than before.

They didn't speak for a while after that.

Sometimes silence says more than conversation ever can.

Later, as they walked back toward the office, Lila noticed something she hadn't before.

Adrian always walked on the side closer to the road.

She looked at him.

"You do that on purpose," she said.

"Do what?"

"Walk on the outside."

He shrugged slightly. "Habit."

"Why?"

He glanced at her, then ahead again.

"So you're safer."

Her heart did something unexpected.

It softened.

Not dramatically. Not loudly.

Just quietly… deeply.

That evening, they stayed late working again.

But this time, the atmosphere was different.

Warmer. Easier.

At some point, Lila said something sarcastic, and Adrian laughed—really laughed.

And the sound of it surprised her.

It was rich. Deep. Unrestrained.

She found herself smiling just hearing it.

"You should laugh more," she said.

"Maybe I need better company," he replied.

She looked at him then.

And something in her chest fluttered.

Not nerves. Not fear.

Something gentler.

Something hopeful.

As they packed up to leave, Adrian hesitated.

Then he said quietly:

"Can I take you to dinner tomorrow?"

The words were simple.

No pressure. No games. No arrogance.

Just a man asking.

Lila felt her heart begin to beat faster.

Dinner.

Not work. Not coincidence. Not rain.

A choice.

She looked at him.

And for a moment, the old fear whispered in her mind: Don't get close. Don't trust this. Don't feel too much.

But another voice—quieter, softer—whispered something else:

Maybe this time is different.

She met his eyes again.

"Yes," she said softly.

And the way Adrian looked at her then…

Was not the look of a man who was curious anymore.

It was the look of a man who was beginning to fall.

That night, Lila lay in bed smiling at nothing.

And it scared her.

Because she realized something she hadn't felt in years:

She was looking forward to tomorrow.
