Chapter 34 - Chapter 34: The Calm Before the Storm

Chapter 34: The Calm Before the Storm

The walk from the Beast Synthesis Wing to the residential sector was a journey through a world designed for the elite. On Planet Astra, the gravity was kept at a precise 1.1x Earth-standard—just enough to keep a tamer's muscles toned without causing fatigue. Roman walked with a steady, rhythmic gait, his white hair catching the light of the setting artificial sun. To the passing students, he was a silent, pale ghost, but behind the Shroud of his eyes, he was processing the biological data of the Crystalline Weaver Spider, his mind a whirlwind of genetic sequences and flux-formulas.

He reached the "Solar Grotto," the most exclusive residential zone on the campus. This wasn't a dormitory; it was a collection of floating islands and terrestrial estates. Roman approached Villa 7, the residence assigned to him as the Rank 7 student of the freshman class.

The villa was a masterpiece of "Bio-Architecture." It appeared to be grown rather than built, with walls made of a white, coral-like substance that pulsed with a faint, rhythmic light. The structure was two stories tall, surrounded by a private garden of silver-leafed trees that hummed when the wind brushed against them.

Roman stepped onto the porch, and the door—a seamless slab of translucent jade—slid open after scanning his soul-signature.

"Welcome home, Rank 7," a soft, synthesized voice echoed through the foyer.

Roman didn't relax. His time in the slums of Terra had taught him that the more beautiful a place looked, the more places there were to hide a blade. He began a systematic inspection of his new domain.

The ground floor was an open-concept living space. The floors were made of heated obsidian, and the furniture was minimalist, crafted from polished driftwood and gravity-defying alloys. In the center of the room was a private Meditation Well—a circular pool of high-density flux water that could accelerate the recovery of a tamer's Spirit Sea.

He moved to the kitchen, which was stocked with nutrient-dense rations and "Spirit Fruits" from the inner sectors. He checked the seals on the windows and the strength of the villa's independent energy shield. Everything was top-of-the-line, designed to protect the university's investment in its top students.

On the second floor, he found the master suite. The bed was a levitation platform covered in silk woven from the cocoons of Frost-Silk Worms. But what drew Roman's attention was the private laboratory attached to the bedroom. It was a scaled-down version of the Synthesis Lab he had just left, complete with a small Amniotic Matrix.

"Dean Malakor didn't just give me a house," Roman muttered, running a finger along the edge of a flux-centrifuge. "He gave me a sanctuary to work in secret."

He checked the perimeter one last time. From his balcony, he could see the distant lights of the other villas. Villa 1 and 2—belonging to the twins—were perched on a higher cliffside, glowing with a cold, intimidating radiance. He felt the distant tug of their "Eyes," a faint resonance in the air that made the Lightning Stone in his chest vibrate.

The physical and mental toll of the last few days finally began to hit him. From the moment he had been betrayed on Terra to the awakening of the Azure Dragon, the battle for Villa 7, and the grueling technical lectures, he had been operating on pure adrenaline and primordial flux.

He stripped off his combat uniform, revealing a lean, corded physique marked by the faint, glowing blue veins of the "Dragon's Circulatory System." He stepped into the shower, which was less of a water spray and more of a sonic and thermal cleanse. As the steam filled the room, Roman leaned his head against the cool jade wall.

Under the hot mist, the "Shroud" felt heavy. He could still feel the indigo seals Malakor had placed on his soul, pressing down on his power like a weighted blanket. It was a necessary cage, but a cage nonetheless. He reached out with his mind, touching the dormant consciousness of the Azure Dragon within the Lightning Stone.

Rest, little sovereign, the beast's voice echoed in his mind, ancient and deep. The storm is coming, but even the lightning must wait for the clouds to gather.

Roman stepped out, dried himself with a flick of his internal heat, and collapsed onto the levitation bed. He didn't even pull the covers over him. The moment his head hit the pillow, his consciousness plummeted into a deep, dreamless sleep. For the first time in weeks, the "Blind King" was at peace.

Five hours later, the silence of Villa 7 was shattered by a sharp, persistent chirping.

Roman bolted upright, his hand instinctively reaching for a knife that wasn't there. His eyes flashed a brilliant, unfiltered green for a split second before the Shroud re-asserted itself, dulling them back to a muted forest-green.

He grabbed his comm-device from the bedside table. The caller ID showed Ellen.

"Roman! Are you awake? Please tell me you're awake!" Ellen's voice was high-pitched with excitement, the sound of a bustling crowd audible in the background.

Roman rubbed his face, his voice gravelly from sleep. "Ellen? It's... what time is it?"

"It's almost midnight, but the Midnight Beast Market just opened!" she chirped. "The University just brought in a fresh shipment of Rank 2 and Rank 3 eggs from the Nebula Sector. John, Shane, and I are already here, and the line is wrapping around the block!"

Roman sat up, the grogginess clearing instantly. The Beast Market. This was where the "wealth" of a tamer was truly decided. The beasts assigned by the school were standard, but the second beast a tamer chose often defined their combat style for the rest of their career.

"Why are you calling me at midnight for this?" Roman asked, though he was already pulling on a fresh set of black trousers.

"Because we need your eyes, Roman!" Ellen said, her tone turning serious. "The instructors are here, but they aren't helping anyone pick. It's all 'buyer beware.' John is looking at a Lava-Scaled Hound that looks sick, and Shane is about to blow his Merit Points on a spatial-glitch bird that might just teleport into a wall. We need you to tell us which ones are actually worth it."

Roman paused, his hand on the door of his villa. He thought about the Beast Synthesis lecture—about the "soul-frequency" and the "structural flaws" he had seen in the Weaver Spider.

"Roman?" Ellen asked when he didn't respond. "Are you coming?"

"I'm coming," Roman said, his voice regaining its cool, sovereign edge. "Stay where you are. Don't buy anything until I look at it."

"Hurry! The Rank 1 and 2 twins just showed up too. The atmosphere here is getting crazy!"

Roman clicked off the comms. He felt the phantom itch in his eyes—the urge to peel back the Shroud and see the world for what it truly was. If the twins were there, it wasn't just a shopping trip. It was a scouting mission.

He stepped out of the villa into the cool night air of Astra. The sky was filled with three moons and the shimmering rings of the planet, but his focus was on the glowing spire of the Academy Market District.

He needed to see these beasts. Not just for his friends, but to see if any of these "new shipments" held the resonance of the other five Stones.

The chapter ended as Roman's silhouette vanished into the darkness, heading toward the neon-lit chaos of the beast market.
