Chapter 16 - Chapter 16: Evolution

Chapter 16: Evolution

The three days leading up to the National Academy Entrance Exams were not a time for rest, but for reconstruction. For Roman Dawson, the damp, cramped training pits of Aegis Academy were no longer sufficient. To catalyze a 5-Star Evolution, one did not simply feed a beast a few high-grade pellets and pray for the best. It required a controlled environment, high-precision flux-reactors, and a sterile atmosphere that only the Beast Creator Association (BCA) could provide.

Early that morning, a strange procession made its way through the city's industrial district toward the silver-domed BCA headquarters. Roman led the way, his cane tapping a steady, confident rhythm against the pavement. Flanking him were John and Ellen, their expressions a mixture of terrifying nerves and blind trust. Behind them followed Instructor Kael—who had officially staked his reputation on Roman's half-day leave—and a small group of their fellow classmates who had caught wind of the "Apprentice" badge. Among them was a silent, brooding Brent Miller, whose eyes burned with a mixture of suspicion and a desperate need to see Roman fail. As they were the graduating class, the weight of the entire Academy's legacy sat squarely on their shoulders.

"You're sure about this, Roman?" John whispered, clutching the transport module containing his Star-Crushing Sword. "Silas is probably still in there. If we mess this up, we aren't just failing an exam; we're blacklisted for life."

"Silas follows the rules of the textbooks," Roman replied, not slowing his pace. "We are following the rules of the universe. There is no room for failure when you have the map."

Upon entering the BCA lobby, the atmosphere shifted instantly. The receptionists, recognizing Roman from his record-breaking 98/100 score and the Stone Monkey incident, didn't dare block his path. Roman marched directly to the High-Tier Laboratory wing, a restricted area usually reserved for Senior Creators.

"I am exercising my right as a licensed Apprentice to rent Laboratory Suite 7 for a private evolution session," Roman stated to the floor manager.

Within minutes, they were inside a room that looked more like the bridge of a starship than a biological lab. Huge, humming Ultrasonic Vats, Flux-Stabilizing Chambers, and Elemental Centrifuges lined the walls.

Roman turned to Instructor Kael and handed him a digital list. "Instructor, I have the funds in my account to cover the premium materials. I need:

Three liters of Glacial Spring Essence

Five kilograms of Iron-Tree Sap

A concentrated Lightning-Cloud Fragment

Obsidian Flux-Dust

Solar-Core Petals

Stardust Mercury for conductivity

Void-Salt for spatial stability

Dragon-Blood Grass Extract to reinforce the soul-veins."

Kael looked at the list, his eyebrows shooting up. "This is... an expensive cocktail, Roman. And highly volatile. If the ratios are off by even a fraction of a percent, the reaction will level this wing."

"The ratios won't be off," Roman said.

While Kael went to authorize the resource withdrawal, Roman pulled three leather-bound journals from his bag—blueprints he had spent the last forty-eight hours perfecting. He laid them out on the central console.

"John, your sword-type beast has a hidden flaw in its density," Roman explained, pointing to a diagram of the blade's internal soul-channels. "We are evolving it into the Abyssal Edge. It will focus on 'Weight' and 'Gravity' rather than just sharpness."

He turned to Ellen. "Your Sun-Flare Eagle is wasting energy. We are evolving it into the Cinder-Wing Kestrel. It will use 'Internal Combustion' to achieve speeds that bypass the sound barrier."

The Concoction of the Sovereigns

When the resources arrived, the lab transformed into a hive of high-stakes chemistry. Roman didn't let anyone else touch the equipment. To his "Cosmic Eye," the laboratory wasn't a room; it was a grid of energy.

He stepped up to the Ultrasonic Refinement Vat, pouring in the Glacial Spring Essence and Stardust Mercury. He adjusted the frequency of the ultrasonic waves until the water began to vibrate at the exact pitch of Zuzu's heartbeat. Next, he used the Centrifugal Flux-Mixer to integrate the Void-Salt and Lightning-Cloud Fragment. The machine screamed with high-pitched vibrations, but Roman kept the flux-pressure steady.

Three hours later, three vials of glowing, viscous liquid sat on the cooling rack.

One was a deep, electric violet—the Tri-Elemental Catalyst.

One was a heavy, light-swallowing black—the Abyssal Gravity Ink.

One was a flickering, molten orange—the Cinder-Core Fuel.

"Take them," Roman said, his voice showing the first signs of exhaustion. "John, Ellen—go to Chambers 2 and 3. I will take Chamber 1. Do not exit until the system announces the evolution is complete."

Roman entered Chamber 1 and locked the heavy, lead-lined door. Zuzu slithered from his sleeve, her green scales shimmering.

"It's time, Zuzu," Roman whispered.

He poured the violet catalyst into the chamber's hydration system. A thick, electrified mist began to fill the room. Zuzu inhaled the essence of the stars. Through his cosmic vision, Roman watched the biological carnage. Her internal flux-veins were expanding, fusing into a single highway for energy. The flux energy concentrated at a single point between her eyes as a crystalline, obsidian horn began to push through the skin.

In Chambers 2 and 3, similar miracles were occurring. John's sword was being bathed in gravity-wells, its steel turning into a matte-black substance. Ellen's eagle was molting, its golden feathers burning away to reveal sleek, ash-grey plumage that glowed with an internal heat.

A final, deafening crack of thunder echoed through the laboratory wing. The power in the BCA flickered as the three chambers hit their peak resonance.

The Reveal of the 5-Star Sovereigns

The heavy doors of the evolution chambers hissed open, releasing a cloud of spent, grey steam.

John stepped out first. In his hand was a blade that looked like it had been forged from a black hole. It was silent, heavy, and terrifying. The Abyssal Edge hummed with a low-frequency growl.

Ellen followed, her Cinder-Wing Kestrel perched on her arm. The bird was smaller than before, its eyes glowing like embers in a dark forest.

Finally, Roman stepped out. Coiled around his shoulders was the Tri-Elemental Horned Snake. Zuzu had grown to nearly six feet, her scales a deep, iridescent emerald. The single, elegant obsidian horn curved from her brow.

"Testing equipment. Now," Instructor Kael said, his voice trembling.

They moved to the High-Grade Analysis Pillar.

John placed Void-Biter on the scale.

[ Result: 5-STAR EVOLUTION ]

The crowd gasped. A 5-star evolution was supposed to be a myth in a place like Terra.

Ellen placed Phoenix-Lite on the scale.

[ Result: 5-STAR EVOLUTION ]

The gasps turned into screams of disbelief. Two in a row?

Finally, Roman stepped up. Zuzu slithered onto the cold metal of the analysis pillar. The machine hummed, its lights spinning until it let out a sharp, digital chime.

[ Result: 5-STAR ABSOLUTE EVOLUTION ]

[ Type: Tri-Elemental Sovereign (Ancient Variant) ]

The silence that followed was heavy enough to crush bone. In the "backward" world of Terra, three 5-star evolutions appearing at once was an omen of a shifting era. Master Silas, watching from the gallery, slumped against the railing, his face a mask of pale, cold terror.

Roman didn't gloat. He simply let Zuzu slither back onto his arm. He looked toward the observation gallery with the cold, piercing gaze of the Cosmic Emperor.

"The evolution is stable," Roman said. "Now, we have an entrance exam to attend."

He turned and walked toward the exit, his generals flanking him. The predator had finally finished sharpening its claws.
