Chapter 255 - Chapter 255

The rush of boots above them grew louder until dust began slipping from the cracked ceiling.

Phryne stood between the archive and the stairs, blood running down her side from Aisha's earlier strike, yet the wound had only sharpened the hunger in her eyes.

Belka felt hundreds of contracts pulling against the Zanpakutō in her hands.

Each one led to a living woman somewhere in the Quarter.

'All right. No pressure. I only have to stop a Level Five, protect four hundred ledgers, and convince two hundred Amazons to develop consciences before dinner.'

Rayleigh rested Benihime against the cut he had opened through the floor.

"The private vault is directly below us, and the main seals are already reacting to Belka's sword. I'm going down before Ishtar realizes someone is touching the foundation of her contracts."

His attention shifted toward Aisha.

"Keep Phryne away from the opening. If the other Amazons force their way inside, make them understand what they are actually defending before you start breaking bones."

Aisha wiped blood from the corner of her mouth.

"I have spent years waiting for somebody to give me permission to say it plainly. You may regret choosing tonight."

"Say it quickly."

Rayleigh dropped into the passage.

Red light followed him down, leaving the archive dimmer and far less comfortable.

The first Amazons reached the upper landing moments later.

More crowded behind them, filling the stairs with gold jewelry, curved blades, and the confused anger of women summoned without being told whom they were expected to fight.

Ardi raised Nejibana.

Water spread across the stairwell in a thick, transparent wall, stopping the front line without striking anyone.

The pressure held them in place while leaving every face visible through the shifting blue.

"Ganesha Familia is acting under emergency authority to protect injured civilians and preserve evidence of unlawful transfers. Anyone who lowers her weapon will be allowed to leave this house without interference!"

Several Amazons shouted at once.

Questions about Ishtar, the ledgers, and the broken doorway collided until nothing could be understood.

Aisha stepped in front of the water barrier.

"You were called here because Phryne moved the black ledgers without our goddess's seal, took two daughters from a senior captain, and threatened to kill them when their mother objected. She has been using Ishtar's interest in Yōtōsai to settle her own grudges, and now she needs the rest of you to hide the evidence!"

The noise changed.

Confusion remained, but the certainty behind it had begun to crack.

Phryne turned toward the staircase.

"You are listening to a woman who brought an armed outsider into our home! Aisha has spent years resenting anyone stronger than her, and now she expects you to betray your goddess because a blacksmith offered her the chance to play hero."

Aisha did not answer immediately.

She picked up the emergency transfer order from the floor and held it where the women behind Ardi's water could see the lower edge.

"Look for Ishtar's seal. You have all carried enough of her orders to know exactly where it should be."

The front row fell quiet.

Only Phryne's mark appeared on the document.

Sabra joined Aisha with one hand pressed against her injured ribs.

"As the senior paper-carrier assigned to this archive, I confirm that Phryne altered the rotation without authorization, amended two dependent contracts without the required signatures, and ordered the records moved into a private vault before the changes could be reviewed."

Every word came out with the cold precision of an official report.

"If you obey her now, your names will be attached to an unsanctioned seizure of Familia property and the attempted murder of three witnesses. Phryne will survive Ishtar's anger. Most of you will not."

'There she is,' Belka thought. 'Sabra finally picked a side, and somehow she still makes rebellion sound like an accounting dispute.'

A veteran near the front lowered her axe.

The Amazon beside her did the same.

Phryne watched them with a slow, deliberate hatred that made Belka's skin crawl.

"You believe Ishtar will punish me for cleaning up this mess? She sent Nira to the smith as bait, allowed the suppliers to squeeze Hephaestus Familia, and ordered us to teach his little Ganesha pet what happens when she becomes inconvenient. Everything done in this Quarter is done for our goddess!"

Ardi's water slammed against the staircase hard enough to drive several Amazons back a step.

The bright warmth normally carried in her voice had vanished.

"You sent four women to surround me in the street, humiliate me in front of my unit, and shove me into a wall because Ishtar wanted Rayleigh frightened. Do not stand there and call that loyalty! You hurt whoever cannot retaliate, then hide behind your goddess before the consequences arrive."

Phryne looked pleased by the anger.

"That bruise kept Yōtōsai awake, didn't it? One frightened girl accomplished more than weeks of negotiation."

Belka saw Ardi's grip tighten.

Kaguya intervened before the answer could become an attack.

"Phryne wants you angry enough to forget the women on the stairs are deciding whether to follow her. Do not rescue her from the argument she is losing."

Ardi drew one slow breath, and the water settled.

Phryne's eyes shifted toward Kaguya.

"You speak confidently for someone I could fold in half."

"You could try, although your last attempt ended with Aisha opening your side while you were busy proving how frightening you are."

Aisha's blade remained dark with Phryne's blood.

The wound had already started closing beneath the Level Five's skin, but everyone had seen it.

More weapons lowered behind the water.

The movement was small.

It spread anyway.

Phryne noticed and drove one fist into the nearest ledger shelf.

Wood exploded across the archive.

Belka raised the Zanpakutō as hundreds of loose pages rushed together, forming a dense layer between the impact and the scattered records.

The force still drove her backward, sending pain through both arms, but the ledgers remained intact.

Each contract pressed another pulse of fear into her awareness.

Too many women were awake now.

Too many had heard the bells.

'Easy. One name at a time, or this sword is going to pour the whole Quarter straight through my skull.'

Phryne ripped a broken shelf from the wall and hurled it toward the staircase.

Aisha struck it aside before it reached Ardi's barrier, though the impact split her curved sword near the guard and sent her crashing against the far table.

Kaguya reached Phryne before the wreckage settled.

Katen Kyōkotsu carved two crossing lines across the Level Five's back, deep enough to expose muscle beneath the blood.

Phryne laughed.

The sound carried genuine pleasure.

"That is better! I was beginning to think Yōtōsai had brought me clerks and children because he wanted the evening to stay dull."

Kaguya withdrew before Phryne could catch her.

"You mistake surviving pain for winning. It is a common flaw among people who have never learned to think past their own appetite."

Belka looked toward the stairs.

The Amazons trapped behind Ardi's water were no longer one crowd.

Some still held their weapons ready, furious at the outsiders in their home.

Others stared at Phryne, the missing seal, or the broken girls being carried toward the clinic.

Several wore the same expression Belka had seen in the Split Oar mirror.

They already knew.

They were waiting for someone else to move first.

Belka forced the pressure of the contracts back into the blade and stepped closer to the barrier.

"I spent six years carrying your papers, so I know which of you have sisters in the houses, which of you quietly paid down a girl's debt only to watch the amount rise again, and which of you stopped asking why the punishment ledgers never matched the injuries!"

The room went still enough for her voice to carry to the upper landing.

"Rayleigh is not asking anyone to abandon women who chose this life. Nobody is closing the Quarter, and nobody is dragging willing workers into some respectable little cage so the Guild can congratulate itself. The only thing ending tonight is the right to keep a person who wants to leave!"

A woman near the back shouted through the barrier.

"And after Ishtar falls? Phryne takes the houses, the creditors take the contracts, and every enemy we have made comes to collect what is left!"

"That was exactly what Ishtar expected us to believe."

Belka lifted the Zanpakutō, allowing the loose contract strips to circle the blade where everyone could see the names written across them.

"The ledgers are being copied. Safe houses are already open. Ganesha and Astraea Familia are holding the roads, while Hephaestus has agreed to fund food, shelter, and travel for anyone who leaves. Phryne cannot inherit the Quarter if she is in chains before Ishtar goes anywhere."

Phryne's face changed.

She had tolerated accusations, defiance, and even blood.

That sentence reached the fear beneath all of them.

"You think these women will hand their homes to you because Yōtōsai gave you a sword?"

"No. I think they will take their homes from you because you just proved what happens if they let you keep them."

The veteran who had lowered her axe stepped through the water.

Ardi allowed the barrier to open around her without dropping it for anyone else.

The Amazon crossed the archive and stopped beside Aisha.

"I joined Ishtar because she gave my sisters work when our village had nothing. I will not repay that by helping Phryne turn this place into her private slaughterhouse."

Another woman followed.

Then three more.

Phryne's breathing deepened.

Aisha pushed herself upright using the broken table.

"You wanted to identify the traitors. Look carefully, Phryne, because every woman walking through that water is choosing the Familia over you."

The huge Amazon charged.

No warning, no insult, and no interest in anyone except Belka.

The floor broke beneath the first step.

Kaguya's blade struck her shoulder and slid away from hardened muscle, while Aisha caught one arm long enough to be dragged several paces across the room.

Phryne kept coming.

'Of course she picked me. I had to give the speech.'

Belka drove the Zanpakutō forward.

The contracts around the blade compressed into a thick white mass and caught Phryne's fist inches from her face.

The impact crushed half the paper and threw Belka across the archive.

Her back struck the wall hard enough to empty her lungs.

Phryne tore through the remaining contracts and reached for her throat.

Nejibana's water caught the Level Five around the waist.

Ardi pulled with both hands, dragging Phryne away before her fingers closed.

"You do not get to hurt another woman just because she embarrassed you!"

Phryne planted both feet and began forcing her way through the current.

The water groaned around her body.

Ardi's face tightened as the trident shook in her hands.

"I cannot hold her for long!"

"You do not need to."

Rayleigh's voice rose from the opening beneath the floor.

The red glow below had become bright enough to paint the archive walls.

A deep tearing noise followed, like heavy cloth being ripped somewhere under the building.

Every contract in the room jerked toward the hole.

Belka felt the change through her Zanpakutō.

The authority woven through the papers had loosened.

Not vanished but loosened.

Rayleigh climbed back into the archive with Benihime resting against one shoulder and a large black seal-stone held beneath his other arm.

Cracks covered its surface.

"The private vault has twelve foundation seals. This one carries the transfer authority for every branch house east of the main road."

Sabra stared at the stone.

"You cannot simply remove that! If the seal breaks without the contracts being separated first, every active debt tied to it will rebound onto the registered owners."

Rayleigh set the stone carefully on the floor.

"That is why Belka is going to tell her Zanpakutō which names want out, while you identify every contract that was signed willingly and still has valid terms. We separate coercion from choice before I dismantle anything."

Belka looked at the hundreds of strips surrounding her blade.

"That will take hours."

"You have perhaps twenty minutes before Ishtar feels someone pulling on the foundation of her Familia."

Aisha's expression hardened.

"You knew she would notice."

"I knew hiding it forever was impossible. I was hoping we could clear more rooms before the screaming started."

The music above them stopped.

Every lamp in the archive flickered at once.

Divine pressure rolled down through the house, warm, sweet, and heavy enough to force several Amazons to their knees.

Phryne stopped fighting Ardi's water.

For the first time that night, fear reached her eyes.

Ishtar's voice descended from the audience hall.

"Phryne, explain why my contracts are screaming."
