Chapter 253 - Chapter 253

"You have spent years proving that you understand your place, Sabra. Do not lose it because another woman finally discovered that contracts can hurt."

Sabra did not release Tessa.

"My place is beside the records I was ordered to protect. You altered the rotation without Ishtar's seal, removed two workers without proper transfer authorization, and entered this archive with a private guard."

Belka almost laughed.

'Of course Sabra rebels through filing procedure.'

Phryne stepped into the archive, and the floorboards groaned beneath her weight.

"Then protect the records."

She swung Cala toward the nearest shelf.

Tessa screamed.

Belka moved before Phryne could release her.

The Zanpakutō struck the floor between them, and spiritual pressure ran through the archive hard enough to throw loose contracts into the air.

Pages wrapped around Cala before she hit the shelf, thickening beneath Belka's power until they caught the girl inside a rough shell of layered paper.

Cala rolled safely across the floor.

The protection did not feel effortless.

Her broken arm, bruised ribs, and terror rushed through Belka's mind so clearly that her knees almost gave out.

'Oh, hell. So you can reach anyone named in the contracts.'

Tessa tore free from Sabra and reached Cala.

The paper loosened around the girl's face and arms, allowing Tessa to remove the gag.

"Mama!"

"I'm here! I have you, and nobody is taking you anywhere again!"

Phryne stared at the paper wrapped around Cala.

Interest replaced the anger in her face.

"You have not called its name, and it already protects whatever these ledgers recognize. Yōtōsai wasted that sword on a clerk!"

"The sword disagrees."

"You believe a weapon's opinion matters inside my house?"

"It matters. I understand why that bothers you, Phryne. You have spent your life believing strength means deciding what everyone else becomes."

Mirel cried out.

The private guard had tightened the hooked blade beneath her chin.

Phryne did not turn around.

"If you release that sword, Mirel dies. If Sabra touches the alarm, Mirel dies. If Tessa carries Cala one step closer to the stairs, Mirel dies. You can protect one name, Captain, so choose which sister becomes evidence of your failure."

The threat had been prepared before Phryne entered.

She wanted Tessa's desperation and Belka's attention pulling in different directions.

Belka looked at the transfer sheet lying among the fallen ledgers.

Mirel's name appeared beneath Phryne's fresh seal.

The Zanpakutō pulsed once against her palm.

'You can feel the contracts. Fine. Find the part she added.'

Belka pushed her spiritual pressure into the ink.

Mirel's fear came first.

Behind it sat years of service, food charges, punishment fees, and a transfer clause that had been stamped over the original agreement less than an hour ago.

The sword reacted violently to that mark.

Phryne watched Belka's face for any sign of discovery.

Belka forced herself to breathe normally.

"Sabra, tell the guard how many signatures are required for a private transfer involving a captain's dependent."

Sabra understood what she was really being asked.

"Three. The house supervisor, the paper-carrier assigned to the contract, and Ishtar's office. Cala and Mirel's orders have only Phryne's seal, which means anyone enforcing them becomes personally responsible if our goddess decides this damaged her negotiations with Yōtōsai."

The hooked blade remained beneath Mirel's jaw, though the guard's hand had begun to tremble.

Phryne glanced back.

"You are becoming irritating."

Sabra folded the emergency order and tucked it inside her uniform.

"Lady Ishtar can replace a paper-carrier. She cannot replace the only smith who forges Zanpakutō, and you have turned her attempt to possess him into an unsanctioned hostage crisis."

That landed.

The guard lowered the hooked blade by less than an inch.

Mirel felt the change.

Belka felt the girl's sudden hope through the contract.

'Now!'

The Zanpakutō's pressure tore into Phryne's transfer mark.

Black ink spread across the page, eating through the fresh seal until the added clause disappeared.

The hooked sword in the guard's hand cracked down the middle.

A strip of contract paper snapped around Mirel's wrist and pulled hard enough to tear her out of the Amazon's grip.

Tessa caught her daughter against her free shoulder.

Both girls began crying at once.

Phryne roared.

The sound shook dust from the ceiling.

Her arm swept across the archive and smashed the central table apart, sending Sabra through a ledger cabinet.

Belka threw herself over Tessa and the girls as paper surged from the surrounding shelves, layering itself into a shield around them.

The impact drove everyone across the floor.

Hundreds of names pressed into Belka's awareness at once, each carrying a separate pulse of fear, pain, and exhaustion.

Blood slipped warm from one nostril as she forced the Zanpakutō to keep the paper barrier together.

Phryne tore through it with both hands.

"You entered my house, stole my records, and took what belongs to me!"

Belka forced herself upright with the sword braced against the floor.

"You never owned the names in those books. You only owned enough frightened people to make everyone pretend you did."

The surviving contracts began circling the Zanpakutō.

"And now they have started remembering that fear works both ways."

A violent impact struck the archive door from the outside, bending the frame inward.

The second blow tore it from the hinges.

Dust rolled through the stairwell as several familiar spiritual pressures entered the house.

Rayleigh walked through the broken doorway with Benihime already drawn.

"Put them down, Phryne. I am only asking once."

...

Rayleigh entered through the ruined doorway with Benihime drawn, though the blade's red edge remained pointed toward the floor.

Ardi came behind him in full Ganesha armor, Nejibana already released, while Kaguya slipped through the dust without making enough noise for the broken boards to complain.

The last presence belonged to Aisha.

Belka felt the room change the moment Phryne recognized her.

'Well, that explains why the front entrance hasn't turned into a bloodbath yet.'

Aisha wore no gold, no veil, and none of the jewelry Ishtar expected from her captains.

Her curved sword rested across one shoulder, and the look she gave Phryne held years of swallowed disgust.

Rayleigh took in the wrecked archive, Sabra half-buried beneath a cabinet, Tessa clutching both daughters, and Belka bleeding over a pile of torn contracts.

His attention stopped on Phryne.

"Put them down, Phryne. I am only asking once."

Phryne stepped over the remains of the paper barrier, her attention fixed on Benihime rather than the people gathered around it.

"You threatened our goddess in her own hall, stole one of her captains, and returned with Ganesha's favorite little soldier to raid her records. If you expected me to kneel because you brought a red sword, you should have invited more witnesses."

Rayleigh glanced at the shattered hooked blade near Mirel's feet.

"I brought enough witnesses to explain why you kidnapped two members of your own Familia without Ishtar's authorization, broke one girl's arm, and tried to kill both of them inside the archive. The sword is here because I know explanations bore you."

Phryne laughed, but the sound carried less confidence than it had moments earlier.

Aisha left the doorway and stopped beside the overturned table.

"She moved the ledgers without Ishtar's seal, threatened senior captains, and turned the main house into her private hunting ground. Every woman upstairs heard the collection bell, Phryne, and half of them are already asking why the goddess didn't announce the transfer herself."

The huge Amazon's face tightened.

"You brought him into our house."

"I brought him to stop you from destroying it."

Aisha's voice remained steady, though Belka could hear the anger underneath it now.

"Ishtar wants Yōtōsai alive, interested, and eventually desperate enough to accept her offer. You took that order and used it as permission to settle your own appetites, because you cannot imagine wanting anything without first breaking it."

Phryne's fingers curled.

"You have always mistaken softness for wisdom, Aisha. That is why Lady Ishtar sends me when something actually needs to be handled."

"She sends you because you enjoy the work nobody else can stomach. Do not confuse being useful with being trusted."

'That one hurt.'

Belka saw it land in the sudden tension along Phryne's jaw.

Rayleigh used the silence to move closer to Tessa and the girls, though he never took his eyes off Phryne.

"Airmid is waiting outside the district with healers. Cala needs that arm set before the swelling damages the nerves, and Mirel has already lost enough blood to make standing dangerous."

Tessa tightened both arms around her daughters.

"You are Yōtōsai?"

"Yes."

"You promised Belka safe routes, guards, and a plan that would stop Phryne from using our children against us. I want to know whether any of that was real before I carry my daughters through a street filled with Ishtar's people."

Rayleigh did not offer comfort he could not prove.

"Shakti controls the eastern road, the Astraea Familia holds the western bridge, and every warehouse on Eleonora's map has food, beds, and guards who were paid before tonight began. The plan was real. Phryne moved first, so now it is happening three days early and everyone is improvising."

Tessa searched his face.

"If she follows us?"

"She will not."
