Chapter 9 - Understand

Isaac's breathing sped up as he recognised the figure that was covered in purple mana. Its face has been ingrained in Isaac's mind ever since he woke up, it was the purple skinned figure.

The figure looked down at Isaac before sitting across from him, and only the fire sits between them. Under the glow of the fire, the figure's features are in full bloom, they have black shoulder length hair and purple eyes that match their mana.

The figure seems to be relaxed while facing Isaac, as they lean against a tree while looking at him. Meanwhile, Isaac is silently panicking while facing the figure, because they might have been the one to curse him, and because of the dream he had earlier today.

They both sit there in uncomfortable silence for what seems like hours for Isaac, but in actuality, only around ten minutes had passed. Isaac was trying his best to shift his mind, but the presence of such a being made it hard not to give them his sole attention.

In Isaac's mind, all possibilities were running around

'What on earth are they doing here. God, why can't they just leave? It's stressful enough that they are here, but why did they have to come when I am shirtless.'

The first one to make a move was the figure who let out a strange cacophony that sounded a bit like a scared cat. If it wasn't for the fact that they were smiling, Isaac would have thought that they needed help.

Isaac jumped back from the sound but tried to maintain composure, but that was a fruitless effort, as the figure let out a small laugh at the sight, which further pushed Isaac to stay on his toes. The figure stood back up and started to walk around before standing at the edge of the light.

Suddenly, there was a noticeable change to the world, as the mana from the figure seemed to seep back into them. The figure then let out a different sound. It seemed more elegant, and it held more meaning.

As the sound left the figure's mouth, the mana that had condensed inside them was let out with the sound. Isaac recognised the structure of what happened as it was channel magic. The figure had just used a form of magic language to cast a spell.

The figure sat back down across from Isaac and looked at him almost like they were waiting for him to do something. After a few minutes of waiting, the figure seemed to be growing impatient, but didn't let it get to them.

Instead, the figure pointed to their mouth and then let out a different noise, before pointing to Isaac. Understandably, Isaac was confused as to what the figure wanted him to do, but he was going to find out what it wanted.

Isaac started to play the riskiest game of charades that would exist. After around 10 minutes of attempts, the answer the figure was looking for was to make Isaac speak, so that's exactly what he did.

"So what exactly is it you want from me?"

Isaac said this fully expecting to be met with laughter, or even death, but instead the figure just shrugged, before using their mana to try to convey a message back, but due to Isaac's less than usable magic, it fell on deaf ears.

The figure rolled their eyes before pointing to Isaac, and then casting a spell that seemed to create a small flame. The figure had used chantless magic to make the fire, so Isaac didn't even know how to copy the figure.

Isaac was looking at the figure with confusion, which seemed to make the figure slightly mad, and they seemed like they were about to leave, but Isaac seemed to get to his senses and spoke.

"Wait, I think I understand, you want me to cast a spell, right?"

Isaac had said this, hoping it was the right answer, considering anything is better than nothing, and it seemed to be the right answer since the figure started nodding.

Isaac spoke again

"What spell do you want me to use?"

Isaac didn't know how to cast spells, but he had the textbook, so it definitely meant he could try. The figure looked at Isaac before pointing to where it had cast its first spell using channel magic.

Isaac was not sure what spell it was, but he was sure he could find it in his textbook since it contained a lot of utility spells. Isaac brought out the textbook, which he had hidden in his bag when he first saw the figure.

The figure looked at the book with a look of intrigue, but they helped themselves back. Isaac opened the book and handed it to the figure, and then spoke.

"Find the spell in that book, and then hand it back to me."

Isaac wasn't fully comfortable giving the book to the figure, but between his life and the book, his life was more important, and to his surprise, the figure started to flip through the pages, and after some time, the figure stopped and handed the book back.

The page the figure stopped on was a spell called *Understand*. The spell understanding is used for communication mainly by people of different races, but this time, it was going to be used to talk with a different species.

The spell understanding can be used both as a channel and as a circle magic, but Isaac was going to have to use it as channel magic. Isaac bent the corner of the page to remember it, and then went to the page on magic languages.

Magic languages are very loose, but as long as the meaning of the word can be understood, then it can be considered a magic language. Luckily, most of Earth's languages count as magic languages. The next step was to learn how to use channel magic.

To use channel magic, you first must condense your mana into your body. This can be done in many ways, but the main way is to focus on an internal body part like the heart.

Next, you must move the flow of mana up to your mouth by moving focus to different parts of the body. Once you reach the mouth, you must focus on your voice as you project the words to the world.

Isaac wasn't confident, but was willing to give it a try. After many failed attempts, some mana finally reached his mouth, but it wasn't enough to use the magic. Isaac's mana, which was once very thick, was turning very thin.

The figure noticed this and handed Isaac a pouch made of hide, and inside it was full of the blackberries that Isaac had seen before, since the figure didn't seem hostile, Isaac slowly put one in his mouth and ate.

His body felt a warm feeling rush down his body, and his mana seemed to thicken once more. He gave casting the spell one more try, as the mana flowed through his body, and as it reached his oesophagus, the mana started to fade, but this made Isaac focus harder, and then he managed to move a decent amount of mana to his mouth.

And from his mouth a single word came out

"Understand"

The world seemed to be coated in the same dark blue as his mana before it receded back into him. The figure for the first time seemed happy and was about to speak when a loud, ungodly roar was let out right behind Isaac.
