Chapter 11 - Chapter 13: journey to the abandoned hollow land

Kai and Ren left the village at dawn, the sun casting a pale orange glow over the winding road. The air smelled of damp earth and wildflowers, and the distant mountains shimmered faintly. Today was their first joint F-rank quest—a test in the Abandoned Hollow Forest, a place whispered about for its strange and dangerous creatures.

As they walked through the village toward the mission counter, they passed people going about their morning. A middle-aged hunter, sharpening a bow, glanced up and called, "Heading out for Hollow Forest, are you? Keep your heads down and your eyes open. That place… it's nothing like the training grounds."

Kai nodded curtly, his eyes scanning the horizon. Ren, smirking, whispered, "He seems impressed with you already. Or maybe scared."

"Focus," Kai replied, though a small, awkward smile played at his lips.

An elderly herbalist, bent over a basket of herbs, added, "Watch the roots, and don't pick the shiny berries—some bite back. You'll see soon enough." She chuckled softly at Ren's wide-eyed reaction.

Ren leaned closer to Kai, teasing, "See? You're already learning from the locals."

Kai let out a short, almost embarrassed laugh before returning to his indifferent expression. "Better to listen than get eaten."

They reached the mission counter, where a young official sat behind a polished wooden desk, flicking through a stack of parchment. He looked up and raised an eyebrow at the pair. "Ah, F-rank adventurers. Here to choose your assignment?"

Ren stepped forward confidently, scanning the board of available quests. His eyes landed on a simple, yet sharp-looking sword displayed at the side. He picked it up, testing its weight with a grin. "I'll take this one. Feels… right."

Kai moved slowly along the counter, his gaze lingering on a pair of gauntlets that promised both strength and versatility. He picked them up, flexing his fists as if feeling the potential in each strike. "These will do," he murmured.

The official nodded, making a few notes on his parchment. "Your target is in the Abandoned Hollow Forest. Complete it within three days. Watch out for unusual predators. Good luck."

Kai and Ren exchanged a glance, the weight of the warning settling over them. They turned toward the forest, anticipation and tension mingling in their chests.

The path to the edge of the Hollow Forest wound past fields where crops swayed in the wind and rivers glimmered in the morning sun. Along the way, villagers offered advice and warnings, their words blending seamlessly with the scenery.

"Watch the trees," a middle-aged farmer said as he passed with his cart. "Some roots grab anything that steps too close. Don't think you can outrun them."

A young apprentice ran past, almost tripping. "Careful! Monsters in the Hollow move faster than shadows!"

Kai offered a brief nod, his tone calm. "Stay alert."

Ren nudged him, whispering, "You really enjoy this lecture, huh?"

Kai let out a small, awkward chuckle, shaking his head before settling back into his usual indifferent expression. "Better safe than sorry."

By midday, the forest loomed ahead. The trees twisted unnaturally, roots crawling across the forest floor like living creatures. Shadows pooled between the trunks, and the wind whispered through the leaves, carrying faint sounds that made the hair on their arms stand on end.

A sudden rustle above made both freeze, then another. Shadows darted across the undergrowth faster than their eyes could track.

Without warning, a massive, shadowy form lunged from the trees, its limbs covered in thorned vines, red eyes glowing ominously.

"Move!" Kai shouted, shoving Ren aside as the creature's claws tore into the ground where they had just stood.

They bolted blindly through the forest, branches whipping their faces and roots threatening to trip them. Ren stumbled, and Kai caught him just in time.

"Careful! This isn't a joke!" Kai barked, adrenaline surging.

Ren laughed breathlessly, brushing dirt from his tunic. "Okay… okay, that was close. I'll admit it."

Kai let out a slight, awkward laugh, shaking his head before returning to his calm, indifferent stance. "F-rank, huh… they weren't kidding."

The forest seemed to hum around them, whispering of trials yet to come—and a creature lurking, waiting for the next mistake.
