Chapter 278: The Gotei 13 in Full Color

Bankai!

The shout came out and the reiatsu pouring off Komamura Sajin seemed to freeze solid in the air around him.

Like something had shattered an invisible boundary in a single moment, his presence became enormous and difficult to look at directly.

And behind him.

The space itself reacted -- as if the air had thickened, stopped moving, become reluctant to flow.

As had been established: for spiritual beings, the gap between levels of reiatsu was not a matter of degree. The distance between strong and weak was many times more extreme than comparing an elephant to an ant. What was happening right now was the clearest possible illustration of that principle.

The light and shadow behind Komamura fractured, and from within it emerged a towering figure in massive armor.

The atmosphere across the entire arena changed completely.

Kokujou Tengen Myou-oh.

Through the dispersing dust, the movements of man and black-armored giant synchronized perfectly, a descent like a god arriving on the battlefield -- producing the instinctive feeling that looking directly at it was something you had to work up to.

At the same time, at a pace visible to the naked eye, portions of the ground and vegetation inside the barrier began to quietly fracture.

Like the edge of a black hole -- just being present there, without any deliberate action, was enough to create an inward pull. Things were drawn in, compressed, dissolved, until nothing of their original shape remained.

This was precisely why captain-level figures were not supposed to release their Zanpakuto within certain boundaries. The damage to the surrounding environment was not theoretical.

Even the Captain-Commander himself was a living demonstration of the same principle. Zanka no Tachi, simply by being drawn, evaporated all moisture in the entirety of Soul Society. Held in release continuously and without purpose, it would threaten the structural integrity of all three worlds.

The effect of power on fragile environments was visible in exactly this kind of moment.

The original anime had actually handled this well -- when the concept of Bankai was first introduced, the staging had conveyed the scale of what it meant in a way that landed. The combination of distinctive sound and the visual presentation of power and intent was exactly the essence of what a Zanpakuto release should feel like.

In any case.

As Komamura's true force made itself known, Kurotsuchi Mayuri -- who had been spacing out entirely, apparently daydreaming in his seat -- gave a small, belated sign of returning to the present.

With complete indifference to everything else, he reached up and scratched behind his ear, then waved a hand sideways in a casual beckoning motion.

"Good timing. Record all the captain-level reiatsu output data while we have the opportunity. Everything goes into the archive. No gaps."

Aizen Sosuke, seated beside him, had already half-risen with a slightly urgent expression.

"Captain Kurotsuchi, this--"

"Excuse me! Shouldn't the immediate priority be protective measures?"

Before Aizen could finish, a different voice came in first.

The small figure sitting beside him -- Vice-Captain of Squad 5, Hinamori Momo.

Her voice wasn't loud, but the urgency packed into it carried two things at once: the drive to assert herself, and the equally visible strain of not entirely belonging in a conversation at this level.

Nearly half the people present turned to look at her.

Even Yamamoto glanced over briefly.

From the expressions, it was clear: addressing captain-level figures directly was a stretch for her. But she had opened her mouth, and backing down now wasn't an option. She pushed through.

"If containment measures aren't taken immediately, the reiatsu overflow could--"

She didn't get to finish.

Kurotsuchi's completely flat, unhurried voice simply cut across hers.

"What I've set up is not something that naive. Even if the first layer fails, there are three additional containment stages behind it."

Bang!

A sharp crack, and the outermost containment layer was blown apart. But before the reiatsu inside could even begin to spread, a second layer, broader and brighter than the first, had already assembled itself in the same breath.

It spread from above downward, resetting the entire arena perimeter, reinforcing everything inside into something considerably more solid and permanent.

Everyone stared.

Only Kurotsuchi raised his right hand and used his index finger to clean out something from under his thumbnail.

"A competent researcher always leaves backup options. For something this important--" he paused, deliberately, "-- you didn't seriously think I had no contingencies prepared?"

The realization hit.

Hinamori's face went red. She sat back down, placed both hands on her knees, and said nothing at all.

Absolutely humiliating.

Of course, not everyone was paying attention to that.

Aizen Sosuke, for instance.

He simply smiled and gave her a gentle pat on the head, his tone warm and reassuring.

"You performed well. Whatever the outcome -- the intent and the drive behind it are what matter most. I'm proud of you, Vice-Captain Hinamori."

Every other word in the world was worth less than Aizen's praise.

In a short time, the Squad 5 vice-captain was smiling again.

Hisagi, seated a little further away, watched the whole exchange and offered a quiet remark.

"Hinamori. She's grown a great deal over the years in Squad 5."

"Were you close to her before?"

The question came from the current captain of Squad 9, Tosen Kaname.

Hisagi nodded promptly and answered.

"Yes. When I was at the Academy, she was a few years behind me. We didn't have many chances to cross paths, but we had some exchanges. Another life's connection, you could say."

Tosen gave a small, composed nod and returned to silence.

Squad 9 carried a specific function as the Gotei 13's prison management unit, which gave it a different character from most of the other squads.

The work demanded one thing above everything else: stability.

You didn't need to distinguish yourself. You absolutely could not make mistakes.

That principle shaped the whole squad from the inside out, and both the captain and vice-captain radiated a particular quality of measured caution that had been built deliberately over time.

Of course, a squad tended to take on the character its captain reinforced, so the specific feeling any given squad produced shifted with whoever was running it.

That was the view from the stands.

Down in the arena.

Komamura, having fully released his Bankai, wore an expression that was briefly and unmistakably conflicted.

He had not intended to engage Zaraki like this. The gap in their standing made the whole situation awkward -- as had already been noted, there was no version of this that looked clean. Win and the achievement was meaningless. Lose and the humiliation was total.

"Zaraki! You still don't see that you're in the wrong here!"

A warning. A last appeal.

Unfortunately, Zaraki Kenpachi was not the kind of fool who could be reached by other people's goodwill.

He heard the words and gave a short, contemptuous laugh. Then raised his blade high.

"Too many words! Come and fight!"

One swing downward, and the brilliant yellow reiatsu came surging off the blade like a breaking wave, slamming directly into the great warrior's torso.

Komamura -- caught off-guard, or simply not having expected Zaraki to strike first -- took the hit straight on.

Kokujou Tengen Myou-oh absorbed the impact through the armor, and while there was no clean wound, Komamura still stumbled back several steps.

And the once-solid silhouette of the great warrior now had a visible dent.

Kokujou Tengen Myou-oh -- as Komamura's Bankai, its power was essentially the highest expression of reiatsu that could be embodied in form. A black-armored warrior figure that moved in perfect synchronization with its user, capable on a real battlefield of overwhelming entire forces through sheer scale and weight alone.

The tradeoff: Komamura shared every injury his Bankai sustained.

So.

A hit to the chest.

"Ugh."

He took the step backward, brow tight, visibly absorbing the feedback.

No apparent wound on the surface. But for a captain to be struck by a seated officer -- to be pushed back even while in Bankai --

There were no words adequate to describe what that felt like in the moment.

The shame of it hit Komamura with an almost physical force and pushed him past considered response into something considerably less controlled.

"You--!!"

He roared, and the reiatsu that erupted from him was everything he had -- a turbulent wave that tore apart the iron bucket helmet entirely.

A furry head emerged.

Several of the Shinigami present couldn't contain an audible reaction.

Not human.

Theoretically possible in Soul Society, but far from common. The general population's tolerance for it was limited.

The fact that this particular individual also held a captain's seat added an additional layer to the reaction from certain quarters.

For a moment, nearly every gaze in the viewing area converged on the unexpectedly exposed furry head.

Komamura registered the exposure but this clearly was not the time to think about it. In the full heat of his fury, he simply committed. He raised his right arm and brought it down.

The great warrior followed.

The enormous arm swung, and the long blade in its grip came down with it.

Like a meteor.

Zaraki barely had time to look up before something that felt like a falling building came down on top of him and simply swallowed him whole.

Two immovable forces colliding.

The shockwave and the sound arrived simultaneously, propagating outward in a single instant.

Bang!

A visible wall of compressed air blasted in every direction, upward and out, like an explosion of pressure given physical form.

Everyone present felt the ground beneath them shake.

No -- that wasn't a description. It was a statement of fact.

Because the ground actually dropped.

A fraction. Downward. Real.

The weight of the impact had pressed deep into the earth, and even with the barrier between the arena and the Seireitei, the surrounding district had felt it indirectly.

Kurotsuchi, who had been operating with complete indifference to everything happening around him, finally clicked his tongue.

He turned back again and made the beckoning gesture a second time.

Nemu stepped forward, bent at the knees, tilted slightly sideways, and positioned her ear close to receive the instruction.

From a service standpoint: both the precision of the movement and the quality of her bearing were, in the most literal sense, professional.

"Make a specific notation on the reiatsu fluctuation levels -- and add a physical impact estimate. No previous records of this type exist. This is the first entry. Keep close attention."

Nemu gave a small, silent nod and withdrew.

As the artificial being she was, she offered no opinion of her own in moments like these.

She had a function. She performed it. That was the entirety of her existence.

As he finished giving the instructions, Kurotsuchi's gaze drifted sideways.

Hinamori Momo was watching him out of the corner of her eye with a very particular expression. It was not difficult to read: she was pleased with herself over his earlier momentary miscalculation.

Something like a monkey could not possibly understand the importance of proper research.

There was no value in engaging with someone like that. No common ground to speak of, on any level.

Ignore her. That was the only rational response.

That was what should have happened.

But Kurotsuchi remained irritated.

Even Nemu, who had just withdrawn to begin her work, came back.

"Kurotsuchi-sama, your body temperature is elevated. Would you like me to implement a cooling measure?"

"Kurotsuchi-sama, your emotional index appears to be trending toward instability. Should I--"

"Will you be quiet!"

The internal commotion within the research group could be set aside for a moment.

At the center of the viewing area, the unmoving presence of Yamamoto Genryusai Shigekuni watched the scene below without showing anything on his face.

"Captain-Commander."

Ukitake Jushiro spoke quietly from nearby, accompanied by a brief cough.

"Is it truly all right to let this continue? If both of them go all out, isn't there some risk here?"

His concern was not unfounded. He was one of the few present who actually understood what both fighters were capable of.

Because the one called Zaraki Kenpachi was, at his core, a detonator looking for a reason.

If this kept escalating unchecked--

Ukitake didn't get to finish the thought.

A dark shape came crashing through the dust and smoke, punching out of the crater the great warrior's blade had carved into the ground.

Zaraki Kenpachi.

"Ha! This is what I needed -- someone actually worth the trouble!"

He had passed some threshold into a completely different state. Covered in wounds, still moving, still burning with it.

And as he steadied himself, his right hand moved toward the eyepatch on his face.

He was reaching to pull it off.

"That's enough. Stop right there."

A familiar voice arrived at his ear.

Zaraki Kenpachi blinked.
