Time skip. Six years later.
You want to understand the modern game? Start with two names.
That is how almost every major football publication opens its season preview. Not a question. Not a debate. Just a fact, stated plainly, because by now the argument has been settled by results and trophies and years of evidence that neither side can reasonably dispute.
The covers say it all.
FRANCE FOOTBALL "The Brothers at the Summit — Six Years On, The Santos Rivalry Defines an Era"
THE ATHLETIC "Klaus Santos: Ice, Intelligence, and the Quiet Tyranny of the Perfect Striker"
SKY SPORTS "Is Lucas Santos the Most Complete Player on the Planet Right Now?"
ESPN FC "Ballon d'Or 2031: Two Santos, One Trophy, Zero Certainty"
Six years ago, they were brothers who couldn't be in the same room without it turning into something. Six years ago, one wore green and gold and the other wore black and white and a stadium full of people held its breath while a presenter pulled names from a bowl.
Now the whole world holds its breath every time either of them touches a ball.
KLAUS SANTOS No. 9 Real Blanco FC
Age: 26. Club goals: 287. International goals (Brazil): 43. La Liga titles: 3. Champions League titles: 2. Ballon d'Or: 2 — including the most recent, awarded eleven months ago. Currently defending.
LUCAS SANTOS — No. 7 — Queensgate City FC
Age: 25. Club goals and assists combined: 341. International goals and assists combined (Germany): 69. Premier League titles: 3. Champions League titles: 1. Ballon d'Or: 2 the last awarded two years ago. Currently chasing.
Two Ballons d'Or each, one between them,
The football world has decided, quietly and collectively, that this is the year the tiebreaker gets resolved.
@FranceFootball_: "The 2031 Ballon d'Or race is the most anticipated in a decade. Two brothers. Two legends. One award. We cannot wait."
@FutebolPuro: "Klaus won it last year. Lucas won it the year before. One of them is about to pull ahead permanently. I need to sit down."
@TaktikFussball: "The best striker vs the best creative player. Real Blanco vs Queensgate City. Brazil vs Germany. It never stops being the same story."
@GlobalFutbol: "You could argue either of them deserves it and you'd be right. That's what makes this impossible. And perfect."
Their father won one Ballon d'Or.
Both sons have already won two.
Nobody in the press says this out loud. But everybody is thinking it.
The thing about Klaus Santos at twenty-six is that he no longer looks like he is trying.
That is the only way to describe it. Watching him now is not like watching an athlete perform. It is more like watching something inevitable. A cornerback stepping into the exact right position before the ball has even been played. A chess player whose hand is already reaching for the piece before their opponent has finished moving.
He sees what is coming, he has always seen it, but now, after years of football at the highest level, the picture arrives faster and stays clearer for longer. He is never rushing because he was already there, he is never scrambling because he already knew.
His captain, Álvaro Reyes, arrives at the training ground on a Tuesday morning and spots Klaus through the window already on the pitch, thirty minutes before training begins.
ÁLVARO: (to the assistant coach) "He's been out there for thirty minutes already."
ASSISTANT COACH: "Every Tuesday. Every Thursday. Sometimes Sundays."
ÁLVARO: "Does he ever stop?"
ASSISTANT COACH: "When he sleeps. Probably not even then."
Later, after training, Klaus sits in the media room. The Champions League draw was announced this morning. The journalists are not here to ask about the draw.
They are here to ask about Lucas. They are always here to ask about Lucas.
REPORTER: "Klaus your brother had twenty goal contributions in his last twelve Champions League matches. Are you aware of that?"
KLAUS: "I'm aware that he is a very good player. Yes."
REPORTER 2: "Do you speak to him? Is there any contact between you?"
KLAUS: "We are brothers. That doesn't require a schedule."
The thing about Lucas Santos at twenty-five is that he has learned to make football look easy.
He was always the one with the flair, that has not left him, but now the flair has architecture behind it, he still beats defenders three, four, sometimes five on the nights when the crowd is loud but the first touch that sets the sequence in motion is placed precisely to make the space appear. He manufactures his own magic. He built the trick and then disguised the build.
After training, the press room. Five journalists. Six questions before someone gets to Klaus.
REPORTER: "Lucas the Ballon d'Or race. Klaus is currently ahead on points. How are you thinking about it?"
LUCAS: "I'm thinking about the next match. The Ballon d'Or is a reward for what happened. The next match is what will happen. I'd rather focus on what I can actually affect."
REPORTER 2: "Do you speak to him?"
LUCAS: "Sometimes."
Rico Santos is fifty-seven years old. He does not give interviews about his sons. He has kept this rule without exception for four years.
He does not ask either of them about the other. He stopped doing that years ago, Somethings have to arrive in their own time. Rico knows this better than anyone.
The Champions League league phase draw takes place on a Thursday afternoon in Monaco.
the time the ceremony begins, the football world has already spent forty-eight hours speculating about the same thing it always speculates about. Whether the football gods who have been arranging these collisions since two boys kicked a ball in a suburban backyard in England will arrange one more.
The seeding rules keep Real Blanco and Queensgate City in separate draw pots. They will not face each other in the league phase.
The path to the final runs through each other only if both win everything.

Lucas Santos league phase totals: 9 goals — 8 assists — 17 combined contributions in 8 matches.
First place and second place on the same points. The same number of combined contributions. The Ballon d'Or race, already tight before the competition began, now sits in plain arithmetic on a league phase table.
The football world notices immediately.
@ChampionsLeague: "League phase complete. Real Blanco 1st. Queensgate City 2nd both through to the R16 direct. You know what that means."
@FutebolPuro: "17 combined contributions each. EACH. The football gods have a sense of humour and It's not okay ."
@TaktikFussball: "Real Blanco and Queensgate on opposite sides of the knockout bracket. The final is possible. It is actually possible."
@GlobalFutbol: "Six years ago it was a U-21 World Championship. Now it's the Champions League, same story, bigger stage."
@SantosWatch: "Two flags, two clubs, two Ballons d'Or each. If they meet in the final, whoever wins almost certainly wins the third Ballon d'Or too. The stakes are incomprehensible."
Klaus watches the final standings confirmed on his phone in the Real Blanco team room. He puts the phone face-down on the table and picks up his coffee.
Round of sixteen first. Then the quarters. One match at a time.
That is the only way he knows how to do this.
Lucas watches on his laptop in his apartment. Sofia is beside him, her hand around a mug of tea, watching with the measured interest of someone who understands the sport well enough to know this matters without being told why.
When the bracket confirms Real Blanco and Queensgate on opposite sides she looks at him.
SOFIA: "That's the one you wanted, isn't it."
LUCAS: (quietly) "If we both get there."
SOFIA: "You will."
Lucas does not respond. He closes the laptop.
Somewhere across Europe, in a city that is not this one, his brother is sitting in a different room in the same silence.
