Chapter 23 - The Ghost of the 19th Floor — A New Beginning

The headlines had faded, the court cases were settled, and the world thought the "Singhania-Malhotra" saga was over. But in the world of high-stakes medicine, secrets don't stay buried—they just mutate.

**Three Years Later.**

Ranveer stood on the balcony of his new apartment in Bangalore, looking out at the city. He wasn't the tired intern anymore. He was a Senior Resident at the National Institute of Neurosciences (NIN), and his name carried weight. But tonight, his mind wasn't on his upcoming surgery.

He looked at the encrypted tablet in his hand. It had arrived in an unmarked box at his doorstep. On the screen was a live heartbeat monitor of someone located in a facility in **Switzerland**.

"Ranveer? The coffee is getting cold," Sweety said, walking out to join him. She looked radiant, her career as a lead cardiologist skyrocketing. But she noticed the tension in his shoulders immediately. "What is it? Another threat from the Singhanias?"

"No," Ranveer said, his voice low. "The Singhanias are bankrupt and behind bars. This is something else. Sweety, look at the patient ID on this monitor."

Sweety leaned in, her eyes widening as she read the code: **Subject 01-Alpha.**

"That's the code from the *Neuro-Z* files," she whispered, her face turning pale. "But... all the test subjects were declared dead. Your mother, Aryan's mother... they said there were no survivors."

"The files we found only went up to Phase 1," Ranveer said, his grip tightening on the tablet. "This monitor shows a living brain. Someone is still running the experiment. And they're using the data *we* uncovered to perfect it."

### The New Player

The "New Twist" began the next morning at the hospital. A new Director had been appointed to NIN—a man named **Dr. Julian Vane**. He was a British-Swiss neuro-tech billionaire who had "donated" fifty million dollars to the institute.

As Ranveer and Sweety sat in the briefing room, Dr. Vane walked in. He didn't look like a doctor; he looked like a shark in a three-piece suit.

"Dr. Malhotra, Dr. Vardhan," Vane said, his accent smooth and dangerous. "I've followed your careers with great interest. You are the 'Top Two' who took down a corrupt empire. Very impressive. But you were playing in a very small pond."

He projected a map of the world on the screen, with glowing red dots in several major cities.

"The *Neuro-Z* drug wasn't a failure," Vane continued. "It was a prototype for something much bigger—**Project Mnemosyne**. A way to digitally backup the human consciousness. Your parents weren't just test subjects; they were the blueprints."

Ranveer felt a surge of rage. "My mother died because of that 'blueprint.' We shut that project down."

"You shut down the *Indian* branch," Vane smiled thinly. "But the project is global. And now, we have a problem. The data you leaked to the CBI contained a flaw. A corruption in the code that only the original researchers' bloodlines can fix."

### The Impossible Choice

Sweety stood up, her voice cold. "If you think we're going to help you restart that nightmare, you're insane."

"I don't need your help, Dr. Vardhan," Vane said, walking closer to them. "I need your cooperation. Because while you were busy celebrating your victory, we were busy 'recovering' the subjects that the Singhania group claimed were dead."

He pressed a button on his remote. The screen changed to a grainy CCTV feed of a high-tech medical room in Zurich.

In the bed, hooked up to a dozen tubes, was a woman. She looked older, her hair grey, but the shape of her eyes and the way she breathed was unmistakable.

Ranveer's heart stopped. He felt like he couldn't breathe. "Mom?"

"She didn't die in the lab, Ranveer," Vane whispered. "She's been in a chemically induced coma for twenty years. Her brain is the server for the entire global network. But the system is crashing. If you don't help us stabilize the code, her brain will fry within seventy-two hours."

### The Hidden War

Ranveer and Sweety walked out of the briefing room in a daze. The world they had built—the safety, the success—it was all a lie.

"It's a trap, Ranveer," Sweety said, grabbing his arm as they reached the secluded rooftop. "He's using her to get to us. If we fix the code, he'll have total control over human memory. He'll be a god."

"But if I don't, she dies," Ranveer said, his eyes filled with an agonizing conflict. "I spent my whole life mourning a ghost, Sweety.

Now that ghost is breathing. How do I let her die again?"

Sweety looked at him, her heart breaking for the man she loved. She knew Ranveer. He was a healer. He couldn't kill, even to save the world.

"Then we don't just fix it," Sweety said, her voice turning sharp and determined. "We do what we do best. We outsmart him. We go to Switzerland, we get to your mother, and we burn the system from the inside."

### The New Rival

As they prepared to leave, a shadow blocked their path. It was **Dr. Vikram Kaul**. He had been reinstated as Vane's right-hand man.

"Going somewhere?" Vikram smirked. "The private jet is waiting. But don't think this is like before. Vane isn't like your fathers. He doesn't want to win a rank. He wants to own the human soul."

Ranveer walked up to Vikram, his face inches from his. "Tell Vane I'm coming. And tell him that if he's seen my mother's brain patterns, he knows exactly what I'm capable of."

The "Top Two" were no longer interns. They were elite specialists entering a global war of shadows.

As they boarded the jet that night, Ranveer looked at Sweety. She was already on her laptop, hacking into Vane's Swiss servers. They were back in "War Mode," but this time, the prize wasn't a medal. It was the life of a mother who had been a prisoner of science for two decades.

The plane took off, soaring into the dark clouds over the Himalayas.

The hundred-chapter journey had just begun.
