CHAPTER EIGHTY ONE
### What The Section Showed
Li Shan's response to the section data arrived before they were back at the hub.
He had been processing since the preliminary relay and was ready.
*The structural transformation. I had not predicted this possibility. I should have — the logic is consistent with everything else the seeding model produces, it simply required a time scale I had not included in the model.*
*Standard seeding effect timeline: four to six months to generating threshold with consistent practice. Forty years of generation with consistent practice produces — based on this section's data — structural reorganization of the pathway structure itself. The section stops being a place where cultivation practice produces effects and becomes a place where the pathway structure is itself a cultivation resource independent of active practice.*
*Implication: the first combination seeded sections that have been continuously maintained for one hundred and forty years may now be structural cultivation resources that do not require active practice to sustain. They sustain themselves. They are simply what they are.*
*This changes the understanding of what the combination produces over long time scales. A combination does not just clear corruption and seed potential. Given sufficient time and consistent maintenance, it can transform landscape. The transformed sections become permanent cultivation resources that strengthen the realm's spiritual foundation in ways that are independent of active cultivation.*
*The section you found is the oldest example of this process completing. There may be others. The sixty-year records — continue the cross-reference. Any section with continuous practice records approaching or exceeding one hundred years should be prioritized.*
*I am updating the archive's long-term projection section. The next wielder should know that what they are seeding may become permanent landscape over the following century.*
Jian Yu read this message to the group walking back to the hub.
Shen Bo was quiet for the entire walk.
When they reached the workshop he went directly to the back storage.
Not to the boxes they had been working through. To a different set of boxes. Older ones. The ones at the bottom.
"My grandmother's records," he said. "Not her grandmother's. Her own. From seventy years ago."
He opened the boxes.
His grandmother's handwriting was different from his own — smaller, more rounded, the script of someone who had learned in an older tradition. He scanned through the pages with the specific speed of someone who had grown up reading this handwriting.
He stopped at a page.
He read it.
He looked up.
"There is another one," he said.
"Another structural section," Jian Yu said.
"Possibly," Shen Bo said. "My grandmother noted a location twenty li east — her words are: a place where the spiritual quality is not elevated, it is simply different in character. Not stronger. Different. Like the Qi there has been organized rather than accumulated." He paused. "She wrote: I cannot explain this quality. I have not encountered it anywhere else in sixty years of network operation. I believe it predates any cultivation practice in the area."
"She was reading the pathway structure," Bing Xi said.
"Without the vocabulary to understand what she was reading," Shen Bo said. "Yes."
"Twenty li east," Jian Yu said.
"Yes," Shen Bo said.
"Is it in the relay network's current coverage," Jian Yu said.
"No," Shen Bo said. "It is in a gap. Between two relay stations. The gap has been on the expansion list for twenty years. It has never been closed because there was never sufficient reason to prioritize it." He paused. "There is now sufficient reason."
Jian Yu looked at the map.
Twenty li east. A possible second structural section. His grandmother's grandmother's practice section twelve li northwest potentially the first.
"How old are your grandmother's records," he said.
"She established the hub seventy years ago," Shen Bo said. "These notes are from her first decade. Sixty years ago."
Sixty years ago.
The section had been there sixty years ago with the organizational quality already present. That meant it had been developing for at least sixty years before his grandmother found it.
One hundred and forty years of continuous practice northwest. Potentially older than that to the east.
"Older," Bing Xi said. She was looking at the map with the Frostbite Edge extended, reading at the twenty li range. "I can feel it at this distance. Faintly." She paused. "The quality your grandmother described. Not elevated. Different. Organized." She paused. "It is not the seeding model frequency. It is something I have not read before."
Jian Yu looked at the map.
"Tomorrow," he said.
"Tomorrow," Shen Bo agreed.
---
They sent the preliminary data to Li Shan before sleeping.
Li Shan's response arrived at the second hour of the night.
*If the section east of the hub predates your grandmother's grandmother's records — if it is structural and has been structural for longer than one hundred and forty years — then it may predate the first combination entirely.*
*There is a third possibility beyond the seeding model timeline. A section that has been in the outer range of multiple combinations over centuries — not one, not two, but several — and has received combined seeding effects from multiple events, each one adding to the structural development.*
*The historical record documents the first combination one hundred and forty three years ago. It does not document what came before. Dao Shen did not create the combination — he executed one that had been attempted before, with partial records of prior attempts. The archive has three references to pre-Dao Shen combination attempts, none of which succeeded. Each failed attempt would still have produced seeding effects at range.*
*A section that has been in the outer range of multiple combination attempts over centuries — including failed ones — could be structurally developed beyond anything the current model predicts.*
*Tomorrow's reading will tell us more than everything we have found this week.*
Jian Yu lay with the journal and the message and the domain extended below him through the hub's territory.
He could not feel the eastern section at twenty li range. Not yet. The domain's current sensitivity had a limit.
He counted his breaths.
One through nine.
He thought about pre-Dao Shen combination attempts. Failed ones. Not fully executing the five-sword combination but producing some effect. Seeding sections at range with partial frequencies. Incomplete. But repeated.
Multiple incomplete seedings over centuries. Each one adding to a structural development that was already in progress.
He thought about the Lost Blade waiting one hundred and forty years.
Not one hundred and forty years since the first combination.
How long had it been in the vault before that?
The journal said Dao Shen found the five swords. Did not say where he found them. Did not say how long they had existed before Dao Shen assembled them.
He opened the journal.
He read the section about the Lost Blade's history. Lin Dao's documentation was thorough on everything else. On the sword's origin it said: *Pre-formation period. Earliest confirmed documentation places the Lost Blade in the northern range three centuries ago. Origin unknown. Dao Shen found it in the third century's aftermath and recognized its properties.*
Three centuries ago.
He set the journal down.
He counted his breaths.
One through nine.
He thought about a section in the outer range of combination attempts going back three centuries. Each attempt, failed or partial, adding a layer. The structural development building across three hundred years.
The cultivation path made physical.
Three hundred years of becoming more itself.
He stayed at nine for a long time.
Then he let sleep come.
