### What The Domain Showed
The active test happened on the afternoon of the first day of travel after the plateau.
They had moved two li north — the first seeded section was three li ahead — and Jian Yu stopped and let the domain extend fully.
The section was present in the awareness. Not faintly. Clearly. The vein network's frequency signature at three li range was readable in the same way nearby objects were visible — present, distinct, the specific character of the seeded section's developing pathways.
He held the Lost Blade and reached for the between quality in the unnamed color.
He directed it toward the section.
The domain was not a sword technique. He was not applying focused frequency the way Feng Luo applied directed heat. He was extending the sword's fundamental quality — the between, the space that found the pathway through breaks — outward through the domain at range, and letting the seeded section receive it.
The section responded at two and a half li.
Faint. Clear. The response of something at range recognizing a familiar frequency.
"Reading it," Bing Xi said. She was moving her attention alongside his. "The section is responding. Rate is approximately forty percent of physical application effectiveness at this range."
"Forty percent at two and a half li," Jian Yu said.
"Decreasing to approximately twenty-five at the maximum domain range," she said.
"But continuous," he said.
"But continuous," she confirmed.
He lowered the active application and let the domain settle back to its passive awareness state.
Twenty-five percent at maximum range. Continuous. Ongoing for as long as he was in the area.
He thought about what that meant for the growing season work.
Physical application — one visit, high-intensity input for the duration of the visit, then nothing until the next visit. Effective but discontinuous.
Domain application — ongoing low-level input for as long as the wielder remained in range. Less intense per moment. Continuous.
"Li Shan," he said.
He sent the data.
Li Shan's response: *The continuous low-level domain application at range will exceed physical visit effectiveness for long-term section development if maintained for sufficient duration. Calculation: three weeks of continuous twenty-five percent effective input equals approximately five to six physical visit sessions. *This means: the growing season work is not finite. Every journey through seeded territory is growing season work. The work does not end when the identified sections are visited. The work continues as long as the wielder moves through the realm.*
*The archive needs a section on domain-range passive cultivation contribution. The next wielder should know that their presence in seeded territory is itself beneficial regardless of whether they are actively working.*
Jian Yu read this to Bing Xi and Lin Mei.
Lin Mei was already writing.
Bing Xi looked at the three li distance to the first section.
"You have been doing this since the breakthrough," she said. "The domain extending from the plateau. Eight to twelve li."
"Yes," he said.
"The spring community is eight li behind us," she said.
"Yes," he said.
She was quiet for a moment. "You have been providing passive domain support to the spring community for two weeks."
"Yes," he said.
"Without knowing you were doing it."
"Without knowing the effect of doing it," he said. "I knew the domain extended. I did not calculate the passive contribution until Li Shan's message."
"The spring community's generation rate may have accelerated," she said.
"Probably," he said.
"We should tell Cui Hua," she said.
He sent a message to the spring community through Xian Yue's liaison office relay.
Cui Hua's response came back the following day.
*The water has been warmer than the previous week for twelve days. We noted the change and wondered. Now we know. Thank you for telling us. We will note it in the community records as: the wielder's domain rested here. So the next generation has context.*
He read the message.
Then he read it again.
*The wielder's domain rested here.*
He thought about the community's records. About Cui Hua adding this line to the documentation of the community's history. About the next generation of practitioners reading it and understanding that something had passed through and left a mark.
He thought about the marker on the hill above the eleventh section. One hundred and fifty years old. The ancestors who placed it responding to something they felt without being able to explain.
The wielder's domain rested here.
He would add it to the archive's human record section.
Not as a technique or a data point. As the specific kind of thing the technical documentation could not hold — the way a presence left a mark that was not measured in cultivation data but was remembered anyway.
He counted his breaths.
One through nine.
He kept walking.
The three sections ahead were present in the domain. He walked toward them and they received the passive input as he walked and he let the between quality extend and find the pathways through the breaks and the sections grew in the quiet continuous way of things that were building toward something without being pushed toward it.
Just him walking north.
The domain doing what domains did.
