Chapter 64 - North Again

## CHAPTER SIXTY FOUR

### North Again

The northern road was familiar in the specific way of roads traveled multiple times — not comfortable, known. The terrain's character was established in the memory. The commitment of cold. The specific quality of altitude air. The vegetation thinning in the exact way it always thinned at this elevation.

They moved at the pace that had been their pace since the growing season began — not the recovery work's intensive daily application pace, not the travel-between-locations pace. The specific middle pace of people who had work ahead and were moving toward it without urgency.

Bing Xi read the terrain as they traveled. Not the vein network specifically — the general condition of spiritual availability in the areas they passed through. The secondary reduction effect that the southern lowlands had shown was present here in the transition zones between Dragon and Ice Sect territories. Not acute. Thin.

"Two to three years," she said on the second day.

"For the secondary reduction to improve," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. "Li Shan's estimate was correct. The northern stabilization is proceeding and drawing less from the southern and transition zone resources. The thinness here is already less than it was six months ago." She paused. "Perceptible."

"Is there seeding effect in the transition zones," Jian Yu said.

She read for a moment. "No. The transition zones were not in the combination's outer range. The seeding required the combination's frequency to reach the pathways. The transition zones are too far south from the formation."

"What about the secondary regions," Lin Mei said. "The areas that experienced secondary reduction rather than direct corruption. Is there any effect beyond the natural improvement from the northern stabilization."

"Checking," Bing Xi said.

She read for three minutes while they walked. The Frostbite Edge drawn and extended.

"Yes," she said. "Faint. The combination's frequency has propagated through the cleared primary network and is reaching the secondary regions at very low amplitude. Not enough to seed development. But enough to accelerate the natural improvement rate slightly." She paused. "The secondary regions are improving faster than they would without the combination even though they were not directly in the combination's range."

"The cleared primary network is conducting the frequency outward," Lin Mei said.

"Yes," Bing Xi said.

"Like — the primary network was conducting corruption's suppressive effect outward," Lin Mei said slowly. "Producing the secondary reduction across the transition zones and south. Now the primary network is cleared and it's conducting the combination's seeding frequency outward instead. The opposite effect. The primary corruption drew down the secondary regions. The primary clearance is lifting them."

Jian Yu counted what this meant.

"The combination's beneficial effect propagates indefinitely through the cleared network," he said. "Not just in the seeded sections. Not just in the primary cleared regions. Through the entire network as it stabilizes."

"At decreasing amplitude the further from the primary regions," Bing Xi said. "But present."

"Li Shan needs this," he said.

He sent the message.

Li Shan's response: *I had the propagation effect in the data but I attributed it to measurement noise. Revising. You are correct. The cleared network conducts the combination's beneficial frequency outward the same way the corrupted network conducted the suppressive frequency outward. The spatial extent of the combination's beneficial effect is significantly larger than the direct clearing and seeding range.*

*Add this to the position calculation section of the archive. The next combination's formation site should be chosen knowing that the beneficial effect propagates through the entire network from the cleared primary regions. The clearing does not have to be positioned near every affected area. It has to be positioned where the network structure will carry the benefit outward most effectively.*

*This changes the optimal formation position calculation. Not by much. But by enough to matter. Revising now.*

Jian Yu looked at Lin Mei.

"He keeps revising," she said.

"The archive keeps growing," he said.

"That is what archives do when the work continues," she said.

They walked north.

---

The first of the northern Ice Sect sections was four days from the Dragon territory border.

A remote valley where a small Ice Sect meditation community had operated for two generations. Twelve practitioners. Twice-daily practice sessions. The community had formed originally around a spring with unusual properties — the water's temperature was consistent regardless of season, always slightly below ambient, the specific cold that Ice Sect practitioners recognized as cultivation adjacent.

The spring was at the center of a seeded section.

Bing Xi read it from the valley's entrance and stopped.

"The spring," she said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"It's not a natural spring," she said. "Or it is a natural spring but the water temperature consistency is not natural. The spring is at a vein network confluence. The water carries the network's frequency." She paused. "The community settled here because the water felt right. The water felt right because the vein network at that confluence has always been active." She paused again. "And the seeding effect from the combination has arrived at the most active point in the network."

"Where the frequency input has already been highest," Jian Yu said.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. "The spring's water carries Ice Sect's specific frequency. The community's twice-daily practice adds to it. The confluence was already producing elevated vein density before the combination. The seeding effect arrived and found — " She stopped. Read more carefully. "The generating threshold. It's already there."

Jian Yu looked at the spring. At the meditation community buildings around it.

"Already generating," he said.

"Already generating," Bing Xi confirmed. "The combination seeded it. The confluence's natural activity plus the community's practice pushed it to the threshold before we arrived."

"The community doesn't know," Lin Mei said.

"No," Bing Xi said. "But the water knows." She looked at the spring. "The water temperature is different from what it was six months ago. Slightly warmer. The generating section is adding heat — not warmth, cultivation warmth — to the water." She paused. "They have probably noticed the water changed."

She walked toward the community.

Jian Yu followed.

At the community's entrance a practitioner met them — a woman of perhaps sixty, Ice Sect background, the specific unhurried quality of someone who had practiced patience until it became structure.

She looked at the swords.

"We noticed the water changed," she said, before anyone spoke.

"Yes," Bing Xi said. "It will continue changing for some time."

The woman looked at them.

"Come inside," she said. "I'll make tea."
