Chapter 56 - East

## CHAPTER FIFTY SIX

### East

The archive went north to the vault with Li Shan on the morning after the camp broke.

He carried it the way he carried everything — efficiently, without ceremony, with the specific care of someone who understood the weight of what they were transporting and did not need to perform that understanding.

He stopped at the road's fork.

"The vault staff will need three days to process the intake," he said. "Then the primary copy is permanent. The working copies go to Shen Bo, the Flowing Hand school, and the eastern Dragon Sect archive."

"Xian Yue's office," Jian Yu said.

"Yes," Li Shan said. "She requested a copy when I sent the position calculation." He paused. "She said: Dragon Sect should have everything from the beginning. Not summaries. Everything."

"She is right," Jian Yu said.

Li Shan looked at him for a moment with the comprehensive assessment quality.

"The eastern anomaly," he said. "Feng Luo's field. When you understand what it is — send it through the relay immediately. Do not wait for the next archive update cycle."

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"I will be watching the cascade data from the vault," Li Shan said. "If I see it before you do I will send word."

"I know," Jian Yu said.

Li Shan picked up his pack. He looked at Bing Xi. The functional-humor expression — brief, precise. "The journal entries you send through the relay," he said. "The ones for the human record supplemental."

"Yes," Bing Xi said.

"Three more received since the archive closed," Li Shan said. "I have included them in the working copies." He paused. "The one from Dao Wei at the waypoint shelter. He wrote about the four-hour decision. It is the most important thing in the human record section."

Bing Xi was quiet for a moment.

"I'll tell him," she said.

"Tell him it will be read by the next wielder's support network," Li Shan said. "People who will need to know that a four-hour decision made correctly is worth documenting even when the person who made it does not consider themselves part of the combination's story."

He turned north.

They turned east.

---

Feng Luo was waiting at the eastern junction with his pack and an expression that was the specific forward-committed quality of someone who had been patient for six days and was done being patient.

"The field," he said.

"Tell me," Jian Yu said.

"Three days east," Feng Luo said. "The section is near a village called Raohe. Farming community. They've been in the edge of Dragon Sect's outer boundary for generations — cultivation conditions reduced but not acute. Standard secondary effect territory."

"The anomaly," Jian Yu said.

"Four weeks ago the soil temperature in a specific section of the fields changed," Feng Luo said. "Not dramatically. A few degrees. Sustained. Consistent. The farmers noticed because their spring planting responded differently than it should have for the current season." He paused. "I felt it through the Flame Blade. The thermal signature is — it's not natural heat. It's cultivation heat. Specifically the directed heat application's signature but dispersed through soil rather than concentrated in a point."

Jian Yu looked at him.

"You planted something," he said.

Feng Luo looked at the ground. "I was practicing the directed application," he said. "Three weeks before I sent the message. I applied it to a cleared section of the field to test the precision range at longer distance." He paused. "I thought it dissipated. The application lasted maybe four minutes. Then I moved on."

"But it didn't dissipate," Bing Xi said.

"No," Feng Luo said. "It sank." He looked at Jian Yu. "The thermal signature I feel now is not what I applied. It's something that developed from what I applied. Like — I provided a seed and the vein network grew something from it."

Lin Mei was looking at her pack where the documentation lived. "The directed heat application," she said. "The cross-absorption from the combination. The Frostbite precision quality in the Dragon Roar Fang's energy that Xian Yue found." She paused. "And your directed heat from the Lost Blade's unnamed color cross-absorption."

"Yes," Feng Luo said.

"Both cross-absorbed properties applied to soil with elevated spiritual conditions from the seeding effect," she said slowly. "The seeding effect generates new vein density. The directed thermal application provides a specific frequency. The elevated density responds to the frequency and—"

"Grows faster," Jian Yu said.

"That's what the eastern sections data suggests," Bing Xi said. She had the Frostbite Edge drawn and was reading the distant conditions. "The seeding effect generates potential. A specific frequency input accelerates the realization of that potential."

Jian Yu looked east.

"How large is the section," he said.

"Two li across," Feng Luo said. "Still growing."

"Has anyone else applied cultivation techniques near the section," Jian Yu said.

"The village elder practices basic Qi exercises," Feng Luo said. "Morning routine. Has for forty years. The same exercises every day." He paused. "His practice site is at the section's southern edge."

"His exercises are providing the additional frequency input," Bing Xi said. "Forty years of the same routine at the same site. The seeding effect arrived and found a consistent frequency source already present."

They walked east.

Jian Yu counted the implications.

The combination seeded potential in outer range sections. Specific frequency inputs accelerated the potential's realization. The frequency did not have to be combat-level cultivation. Basic practice applied consistently over time was sufficient.

He sent a message to Li Shan through the relay.

Li Shan's response arrived before they reached the day's midpoint.

*I see it in the cascade data. The Raohe section is not unique. There are four other sections in the outer range territory showing similar acceleration. All four have consistent long-term cultivation practice sites at their edge. The elder's morning exercises. A shrine where two families practice together each evening. A training ground used by a village patrol for twenty years.*

*The seeding effect is not passive. It responds to consistent frequency input. The combination planted seeds. The people who practice cultivation near those seeds are growing them without knowing it.*

*The archive requires a new section.*

Jian Yu read the message to the group.

Feng Luo was quiet for a moment.

"The farmers in the section," he said. "They didn't do anything different. They just kept farming."

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"And their fields grew better," Feng Luo said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

Feng Luo looked at the road east. The specific quality of someone processing something that was larger than it had initially appeared.

"The combination helped people who don't know the combination happened," he said.

"Yes," Jian Yu said.

"Good," Feng Luo said. That was all.

They moved faster.
