Chapter 5: The Normalcy Filter

Day 11: Combat Power 2,048

The bus ride back to Satan City was the ultimate test of Kaito's new "Calibration."

The vehicle was cramped, smelling of stale coffee and old upholstery. In the seat next to him, a toddler was kicking the back of the chair, and the man behind him was snoring loudly. A week ago, Kaito would have been a nervous wreck, terrified that a sudden lurch of the bus would cause him to instinctively brace himself and punch a hole through the floorboards.

Now, he sat with his eyes closed, a faint, relaxed smile on his face.

[Current Combat Power: 2,048]

[Status: Low-Tier Galactic Warrior (Equivalent: Raditz/Early Gohan)]

At over 2,000 CP, Kaito was officially stronger than the Saiyan who had nearly ended Goku and Piccolo's lives at the start of Dragon Ball Z. Yet, as he reached up to adjust the air vent above his head, his touch was as delicate as a surgeon's. He didn't have to think about it anymore; the System's reward had turned his "Control" into a passive instinct. He was a shark swimming in a pool of goldfish, but he had the grace to not move a single drop of water.

He stepped off the bus at the downtown terminal, the familiar smog and noise of the city washing over him. It felt good to be back. The mountains were fine for a hermit, but Kaito liked the energy of civilization. He liked the irony of walking past a massive billboard of Mr. Satan "saving the world" while he, a twenty-something in a hoodie, possessed enough raw ki to vaporize the entire city district with a casual wave of his hand.

He pulled his phone from his pocket. It was still cracked from Day 1, a reminder of his early clumsiness. He navigated to his messages and typed out a quick reply to Krillin.

Kaito: "Hey man, sorry for the radio silence. Went on a bit of a solo hiking trip to clear my head. I'm back in town. You still up for that drink at the station?"

The reply came back almost instantly.

Krillin: "Hiking? You? I didn't know you had it in you! Yeah, I'm finishing up a shift in twenty minutes. Meet me at 'The Tipsy Turtle' near the precinct. First round is on me since you went AWOL."

Kaito chuckled. He tucked the phone away and began to walk. He didn't use his 2,000 CP speed. He moved at a leisurely human pace, enjoying the sensation of the pavement under his shoes.

As he approached the bar, he saw a familiar bald head and a police uniform through the window. Krillin was sitting at a booth, looking tired but cheerful. Beside him was Yamcha, sporting his signature scar and a bright yellow tracksuit.

Kaito took a deep breath. This was the moment of truth. These guys were seasoned martial artists. They spent their lives sensing ki. If he hadn't masked himself correctly, they would see a sun standing in the doorway.

He stepped inside. The bell chimed.

Krillin looked up, waving a hand. "Over here, Kaito! Man, you look... tan? Did you actually go outside?"

Yamcha grinned, sliding over to make room in the booth. "Look at this guy. He goes missing for ten days and comes back looking like he found enlightenment in the woods. Sit down, buddy."

Kaito slid into the booth. He felt the weight of their gaze, but there was no shock. No defensive posturing. To them, he was just Kaito—the guy with a power level of maybe 2 or 3 on a good day.

"You have no idea," Kaito said, his voice smooth. "The mountains are quiet. Maybe a little too quiet."

"I hear that," Yamcha sighed, signaling the waiter. "I've been thinking of heading out to the desert for some training myself. Vegeta's been pushing everyone so hard lately, I feel like I'm falling behind just by breathing."

Kaito watched them. He could see the faint flickers of their ki—Krillin was a steady, warm glow, and Yamcha was a sharper, more jagged flame. They were strong—monstrously strong by human standards—but to Kaito's new eyes, they looked like flickering candles.

And yet, he didn't feel superior. He felt safe.

"So, what's the plan for Bulma's party?" Kaito asked, leaning back. The table didn't creak. The glass he picked up stayed perfectly intact. "I heard it's a cruise ship this year."

"Yeah, Bulma's going all out," Krillin said, taking a sip of his drink. "She says it's for her birthday, but we all know she just wants an excuse to show off the new Royal Hope liner. Even Goku is coming, though he'll probably spend the whole time at the buffet."

"I'm looking forward to it," Kaito said, and he meant it.

He spent the next hour laughing with them, listening to stories about Gohan's studies and the latest gossip from Capsule Corp. He was perfectly integrated. He played the part of the "normal friend" with such precision that even he almost forgot about the 2,048 CP humming in his chest.

But as the night wore on, he felt the familiar pull.

11:59 PM.

He stood up, excusing himself to use the restroom. He stepped into the quiet, dimly lit hallway of the bar. He leaned against the wall, watching the digital clock on his phone.

3... 2... 1...

[Midnight Reached. Combat Power: 2,048 -> 4,096]

The jump was massive. His strength had doubled again. In an instant, he had surpassed the elite warriors of the Saiyan invasion. He was now approaching the territory of Nappa.

The air in the hallway shimmered for a fraction of a second as his aura threatened to flare, but the Divine Ki Calibration kicked in instantly. It caught the surge of power and folded it back into his core, tucking it away behind the "Kaito" filter.

He looked at his reflection in the hallway mirror. His eyes were a little brighter, his skin a little clearer, but he still looked like the same guy who had walked in an hour ago.

"Four thousand," he whispered to the mirror.

He walked back out to the booth, sliding back into his seat next to Yamcha.

"You okay, man?" Yamcha asked, looking at him curiously. "You look like you just got a second wind."

Kaito grinned, picking up his drink. "Just realized I'm really looking forward to that party, Yamcha. It's going to be one for the history books."

He had 79 days left. By the time Day 14 hit, he would be at 16,000 CP—stronger than base-form Goku when he first arrived to fight Vegeta. And he was going to do it all while sitting right here, having a drink with his friends.
