Chapter 9 - CHAPTER NINE - THE BLOOD OF THE SALVADOR

"The Predator's Wake"

PREVIOUSLY:

The bar was still pulsing with music, but inside the cramped bathroom stall, the air had turned stagnant and cold. Maverick stepped over the withered, grey husk that had once been Leo. The life force he had drained was like a shot of adrenaline through his veins, making his muscles corded and tight.

He adjusted his jacket, his handsome human face settling back into a mask of perfect, lethal charm.

"One soul down," Maverick whispered, his voice vibrating with a horse's low whinny. "Many more to go before I am worthy to face the Shadow."

He walked out of the bar, past the laughing crowds who had no idea a monster walked among them. He wasn't just a hunter anymore; he was a black hole, consuming everything in his path to satisfy Kaito's dark ambition.

THE CONTINUATION:

In the training hall of the Academy, the air crackled. Min Joon moved with a speed that defied human physics, a bolt of spiritual lightning erupting from his fingertips to shatter a training post.

"Focus, Ethan! Your ancestors didn't need words to command the elements. They were the element!"

Ethan closed his eyes, his lips beginning to form the familiar syllables of his incantation. "I call the dawn—"

Before he could finish, Min Joon was there. He silenced Ethan with a sudden, forceful kiss—a shock to the system that broke Ethan's concentration instantly. Ethan's face flushed deep crimson as Min Joon pulled back, his eyes cold and urgent.

"You're distracted by your heart," Min Joon hissed. "How can you save Akihiko if you're too weak to even breathe without a spell? You don't know the cost of this war. You don't know what happened twenty years ago."

Flashback: The Fall of the Japan Headquarters

Twenty years ago, the White Dove facility in Japan was a sea of fire. The Nogitsune—dark, void foxes—had breached the inner sanctum.

"Taikyaku! Taikyaku!" the commanders screamed amidst the clashing of steel.

Through the smoke, a battalion of Filipino soldiers arrived. They were elite warriors in reinforced Barong and Salakot, swinging heavy Kampilan swords that cut through the dark kitsune shadows like paper.

"Lieutenant, the Gumihos in the South are being slaughtered!" a soldier cried out over the roar of battle. "It's a trap! Kaito's main force is at the southern border!"

The leader of the unit, Lieutenant Lucas Salvador, looked at the devastation around him. His eyes began to glow with a predatory, golden light.

"Open the portal," Lucas commanded, his voice vibrating with a low, animalistic growl. "I'm going to the South."

"But Lieutenant!" Major Choi warned, his hands already glowing with the blue energy needed to tear through space. "We don't have enough men!"

"I don't need men," Lucas replied. His body began to contort, his skin darkening into the toughened, shadow-like hide of the Sigbinan.

Suddenly, an arrow whistled through the air, piercing Lucas's shoulder.

Standing on a high rafters was Hana, Major Choi's own sister. Her eyes were clouded with grief and rage. "His kind killed the man I loved!" she shrieked, pulling back her bowstring for a killing shot. "The Salvador bloodline must end!"

"Hana, stop!" Major Choi roared. In an explosion of spiritual pressure, Choi transformed. His human form vanished, replaced by a massive, snarling White Tiger. He lunged, his heavy paw shattering Hana's next arrow mid-air.

"Go, Lucas!" the Tiger growled. "I'll handle my sister. Save the South!"

Lucas—now fully the Sigbinan—stepped through the shimmering blue rift. He arrived in the South to a nightmare. There, a much younger Min Joon was frozen in place, paralyzed by a Nogitsune's binding curse, watching as the dark foxes closed in for the kill.

Min Joon's Memory: The Silent Protector

Min Joon stared at his hands, his voice dropping to a whisper as he recalled the smell of smoke from his childhood village.

"I was only ten. I stood there, frozen, as the Nogitsune witch cast her binding spell. I couldn't even scream. Kaito, in his massive, black wolf form, was inches away from my throat. He was going to end the Haechi line before it even began."

He looked at Ethan, his eyes burning. "Then, a blur of shadow hit him. Senior Lucas arrived. He didn't say a word; he didn't cast a spell. He moved with such lethal precision that Kaito didn't even see the blade. Lucas severed six of his tails in a single strike."

"I found my courage then," Min Joon continued, a grim smirk appearing. "I threw my boomerang and took two more. Kaito fled like a wounded dog, screaming for Calista. He has been hiding, rotting in his anger, waiting for a chance to take those tails back. And the only way he can regrow them is by consuming the life force of a Gumiho or a Kitsune."

"So that's why he needs me?" Ethan asked, his heart racing.

"No," Min Joon corrected him. "He needs to kill you because the Sigbinan is the only one who can permanently sever his connection to this world. But to power up? He's hunting foxes."

The Bar: A Bloodied Truth

Across the city, Akihiko felt the glass in his hand vibrate. The air in the bar felt heavy, like it was pressing against his lungs.

"Listen to me, Aki," Daisuke pleaded, sitting so close Aki could smell the black butterflies.

"Remove this curse!" Aki hissed, his eyes beginning to glow with an amber light he couldn't control. "What did you do to me?"

"I didn't curse you," Daisuke whispered urgently. "I awakened you. The moment I touched you, I felt it—the blood of the Hiroshi clan. We are from the same lineage, Aki. I was adopted into your family's shadows centuries ago."

"So what?" Aki's voice cracked with rage. "You mean after what we did in my bedroom, my 'Kitsune thing' just decided to wake up?"

The glass in his hand shattered. Shards sliced into his palm, but instead of the pain making him flinch, he felt a strange, surging heat. The bartender rushed over, but Aki barely heard him. He threw some bills on the counter, his mind spinning. Hiroshi clan? The last Kitsune?

The Near-Collision

Aki turned to bolt out of the bar, desperate for fresh air, when he slammed into a wall of solid muscle.

"Sorry, bro," the man said.

Aki looked up. It was Maverick. The Tikbalang in human form stood there, looking down at the bleeding policeman with a polite, cold smile. To a normal person, Maverick looked like a model. To Aki's newly awakened Kitsune senses, Maverick smelled like a stable fire and ancient hunger.

Aki didn't say a word. He just nodded and pushed past him into the night.

Maverick stood by the door, his nostrils flaring as he caught the scent of Aki's blood on the floor. He licked his lips. "Kitsune blood," he whispered to himself. "Kaito will be pleased. A two-for-one special."

The atmosphere in the mansion shifted from dread to pure confusion as Kaito stepped into the grand hall.

"Kaito?" Calista gasped, her eyes widening.

"Do you like it, Calista?" Kaito asked, posing with a strange sense of pride. "Maverick bought this for me. He was right—I must observe my enemies in the outside world. They won't recognize me in this."

Calista bit her lip, trying to find the words. "My Lord... that outfit is... quite revealing."

Kaito was standing there in a tight, satin sexy bunny outfit, complete with fishnet stockings. He gestured to the plush rabbit ears atop his head. "What do you mean? I miss my fox ears. These feel... familiar."

Maverick hurried into the room, nearly tripping over his own feet. "My Lord! That wasn't the outfit! I gave you the wrong bag!" He quickly handed Kaito a new paper bag containing a stylish, modern suit.

"Then what is this for?" Kaito asked, gesturing to the bunny ears.

"That is for... an occasion called Rabbit Day," Maverick scrambled, wiping sweat from his forehead. Calista turned away, her shoulders shaking as she fought the urge to laugh.

"Rabbit Day? In May?" Kaito asked, suspicious.

"It's a very early celebration for... Christmas Eve?" Maverick continued, his voice going higher. "And it was on Sale, My Lord! The price was lowered so we could save money for our conquest!"

"Ah, like the festivals in Korea," Kaito nodded sagely, finally convinced. "Lower prices for the commoners. Very well. I shall change into this 'suit,' but I am keeping these ears. Everyone must know I am a powerful Nogitsune, and these ears represent my status!"

"As you wish, My Lord," Maverick sighed with relief.

The Search Grows Cold

As Kaito retreated to his room to change, the humor in the room vanished. Daisuke walked in, looking tired and smelling of the city's smog.

"Where have you been?" Calista asked, her voice returning to its sharp, cold edge.

"I've been listening to the Marites—the human gossipmongers," Daisuke reported. "There is a name that keeps coming up. Ethan. He's been missing for weeks without a trace."

"People disappear every day," Maverick interjected, leaning against the wall. "They move, they go abroad, they die. That's the nature of humans."

"But this Ethan is the only lead we have," Calista hissed, her frustration boiling over. "If he's connected to the Sigbinan, we are losing time. Every day we fail, Kaito's tails fade further. This is exhausting!"
