Chapter 55: Do You Have a Girlfriend
By some twist of fate, Zhang Yang bought another dozen masks, slipping one on for himself.
On an afternoon with no classes, groups of lively university girls were out shopping nearby. From a distance, they spotted his tall figure.
"Look! That tall guy with the double-breasted coat-he looks so handsome from behind!"
"Let's go see the front."
They quickened their pace, trying to glance back.
"You can tell he's handsome even with a mask."
"Look at his eyes-they're really nice."
"Maybe not. He could just be a 'mask handsome guy'. Take off the mask, and you might be surprised!"
Their whispers carried in fragments, inevitably reaching Zhang Yang's ears.
It was the same scene, the same words-but he was no longer the old Zhang Yang.
He smiled lightly and removed his mask, revealing a strikingly handsome face that left the girls frozen in place.
By the time they recovered, all they could do was watch his retreating back.
That evening, Zhang Yang had dinner with Bei Wei.
"Brother Zhang, I really think your looks were sealed before," Bei Wei said, cheeks flushing as she ate, glancing up at him often, reluctant to look away.
Zhang Yang smiled.
Technically, his current appearance was an optimization of his original features-still recognizable as him, nothing abrupt. Handsome, yes, but still his own face.
"By the way, I've been taking a lot of leave recently-no one said anything, right?" Zhang Yang asked casually.
"Nope. But Brother Zhang, the atmosphere at work has been strange," Bei Wei frowned slightly. "Management has been holding meetings every few days, like something big is about to happen."
"This company isn't that large. How big can it really be? Layoffs? Bankruptcy? That's about it," Zhang Yang said with a laugh.
In a company of a few dozen people, even 'big events' feel minor. And he, no longer emotionally involved, was hardly stirred by company affairs.
"Layoffs?" Bei Wei's face paled.
"Not really. Staff is already lean, and business has been doing well," Zhang Yang reassured her. "With me around, what are you worried about? At worst, I'll support you."
Earning fifty thousand a day, he had the right to say such things.
"That won't do," Bei Wei lightly scolded, fists clenched. "Girls must be independent."
Zhang Yang chuckled and ruffled her dark hair.
"Okay, I get it. You want to rely on yourself. Then just consider me your backup-so long as I'm here, you won't go hungry."
"Is it really that bad?" she murmured.
After dropping off Bei Wei, Zhang Yang went to his car outside the apartment.
The trunk of his Bentley, worth over five million, opened. He pulled out his chauffeur uniform and folded electric bike, transforming once again into part-time driver Zhang Yang.
Outside the hotel late at night, cars came and went, people bustling.
He stood patiently on the curb, waiting for Irene's event to end.
Minutes passed. Crowds began pouring out, signaling the party's conclusion.
Footsteps sounded behind him.
He turned to see Irene in a fitted evening gown, her long legs visible, exuding the aura of a mature woman.
"Little Zhang, have you been waiting long?" she asked, slightly flushed from the wine, smiling.
"Just arrived, Irene," Zhang Yang said with a smile. "Not too much, I hope?"
"I'm fine, I know my limits," she said, brushing her forehead, smiling, but then stumbled after a couple of steps.
"Careful, Irene," Zhang Yang said, catching her instinctively, his hands circling her toned waist.
"Thank you, Little Zhang," Irene said, a touch of shy girl-like embarrassment on her face.
"Should I help you into the car?" Zhang Yang offered.
"Y-yes… that's good." Feeling his strong arms around her waist and his broad chest beneath her, Irene blushed, nodding unconsciously.
Normally, she was always composed with men, but with Little Zhang, she felt an unfamiliar pleasure rather than any dislike.
Moments later, Zhang Yang helped her into the car, skillfully starting the engine for the return trip.
Irene sat in the back, silently studying his profile.
She had always noticed his figure, but now, seeing his angular face, thin lips, and prominent nose, she felt her heart flutter.
"Little Zhang, do you have a girlfriend?" she asked, drawing a breath, smiling.
Stripped of her office's icy protective facade, this was her true self in the car.
"I have one," Zhang Yang replied.
"Makes sense. You're attractive and a good person-hard to stay single," Irene said, unsurprised. "No wonder you work so hard-you probably have to support her too?"
"We work together. She's pretty independent," Zhang Yang said, recalling Bei Wei's serious expression, smiling.
"That's good. Life is hard if only one person is working," Irene agreed. "By the way, Little Zhang, are you free the weekend after next? I have another task for you."
"Irene… actually," Zhang Yang hesitated, "today should be the last time I drive for you. Also the last time as a part-time model."
"Last time?" Irene's smile faltered, her heart sinking.
"What's wrong? Will you be spending more time with your girlfriend?"
"I have other things tonight," Zhang Yang said casually. "Either way, I need to thank you for all your care recently."
Beyond the modeling shoots, she had always given him tips for his driving shifts. Even if he didn't care about money, he valued the thought behind it.
"No need. It's not easy making it alone in Shanghai. I've been through it too. I get it," Irene said, watching his broad back, forcing a smile. "If you ever need help, you know where to find me."
"I will," Zhang Yang nodded.
He set his things at his feet, and Irene would naturally notice.
And with this chapter of his part-time work over, Zhang Yang would return to being himself tomorrow.
A journey that normally wouldn't seem long felt unusually extended today.
