Chapter 28 - Chapter 28: Family Matters

Chapter 28: Family Matters

"Sold!"

As the saying goes, momentum fades if it's interrupted. The courage he had just built up had been broken, and he no longer had the nerve to let the knife fall. So he simply stuck to his original idea-take the money and leave.

After all, he bought it for fifty thousand and sold it for three hundred thousand. He made the money, and someone else would bear the risk. Why not?

Zhang Yang completed the transaction briskly and took the raw stone.

In the blink of an eye, the watermelon-sized stone was in his hands.

The surrounding crowd stared eagerly at the stone. The show seemed to have reached its climax, and everyone was expecting Zhang Yang to cut it open on the spot.

Whether it rose or collapsed, they were even more eager than he was.

"Just cut it straight through." Zhang Yang handed the stone to the worker without hesitation and stepped aside.

He didn't need much mental preparation and didn't feel any psychological pressure. Whether it rose or fell, he had already prepared himself.

The worker nodded, placed the stone on the machine, and cleanly cut it in half.

The stone really split like a watermelon.

Someone nearby splashed a basin of water over it. Under the sunlight, a glimmer of watery shine immediately flashed.

Suddenly someone in the crowd shouted.

"It rose!"

"It really rose!"

"Ah! If I had known, I would've bought it just now!"

"Why are you slapping my leg instead of yours? Damn, that hurts!"

Zhang Yang examined the cut surface. There wasn't anything unbelievable like cutting open glass-type imperial green jade in a single stroke. It was simply the same as the window that had been rubbed open earlier-consistent inside and out.

There was nothing dramatic or coincidental about it.

He had simply won the gamble.

"With this water quality and this size, it can produce at least twenty bracelets and ten ring faces. I'll take it for three million."

"Three million two hundred thousand! Will you sell for three million two hundred thousand?"

Buyers around him rushed forward. Transactions worth several million naturally attracted plenty of people who could afford it.

"I'll take another look." Zhang Yang wasn't in a hurry to trade immediately. He picked up the stone and left the scene.

For this matter, he didn't want to be taken advantage of. He also wanted to go back and study it a bit, understand the market and prices.

And there was another very important purpose.

He could say he made a fortune from cutting open jade, but he couldn't just say it with words. After all, words alone weren't convincing. Since he had such a rare opportunity, he had to show proof to his family.

After returning to the apartment, Zhang Yang immediately started a video call with his father Zhang Zhaohai.

Soon the call connected. Zhang Zhaohai had a towel hanging around his neck and was shoveling rice into his mouth.

"Have you eaten?" Zhang Zhaohai put down his chopsticks, leaned toward the screen, and wiped the camera lens with his finger as if it was a bit dirty.

"I'll eat later. Is Uncle's restaurant busy today?" Zhang Yang asked first.

His younger uncle had opened a small restaurant in recent years and business had always been good. Zhang Zhaohai had once worked as a sort of self-taught banquet chef, so he had been helping in the kitchen there.

"It's alright. There's a full-month celebration banquet for a baby, a few tables, and some private rooms with guests," Zhang Zhaohai replied, then briefly raised his head to exchange a few words with someone in the kitchen.

Zhang Yang looked at his father's lunch today-plain rice and vegetable tofu soup, completely vegetarian.

There was naturally no shortage of food in the kitchen, but dealing with oil, salt, and sauces every day killed the appetite. Anyone would get tired of it.

"By the way, why did you suddenly want to chat with me at noon?" Zhang Zhaohai sat back down.

"I want to show you something." Zhang Yang switched to the rear camera and pointed it at the stone cut in half. "Dad, recognize this?"

"Raw stone? Imperial green? We're rich?!" Zhang Zhaohai's rapid-fire reaction left Zhang Yang stunned.

"Imperial green? No… Dad, where did you even learn all that?" Zhang Yang was speechless.

"From novels! Your dad likes listening to novels when I'm free. Things like this eye and that eye, the protagonist opening heavenly eyes, imperial green, glass type-so satisfying to watch… Oh right, I was joking just now. Is that really a raw stone?" Zhang Zhaohai asked suspiciously.

"It is a raw stone, one that's already been cut open." Since his father kept mentioning imperial green, Zhang Yang felt it would be inappropriate to act overly excited, so he spoke calmly.

"It's really a raw stone? You're calling me at noon to show this… does that mean… it rose?" Zhang Zhaohai finally realized the seriousness of the situation and asked cautiously.

"I spent several months' salary buying it. It did rise," Zhang Yang said.

"How much did it rise?" Zhang Zhaohai leaned closer to the screen, trying to see the stone more clearly.

"I'm not completely sure about the price yet, but someone offered three million on the spot. Another offered three million two hundred thousand," Zhang Yang said.

As soon as he finished speaking, he saw his father sit down heavily.

"How much?!" Zhang Zhaohai shouted.

"Over three million," Zhang Yang repeated.

"Wait a second!" Zhang Zhaohai immediately ran out of the kitchen and out of the restaurant. The background behind him had already changed to outdoors.

Zhang Yang realized he had underestimated the impact of three million on his father.

For an ordinary person, what did it mean for three million in cash to suddenly fall from the sky?

It meant a car, a house, life's major problems solved, and even enough money saved for retirement.

Yes, Zhang Yang's standards had risen, and three million didn't seem that impressive to him anymore. But to his parents, three million was a lifetime.

In the next few minutes, Zhang Zhaohai repeatedly asked questions while Zhang Yang patiently explained again and again.

Accepting it took time, but Old Zhang's strong heart wasn't for nothing.

Eventually, he calmed down and accepted the reality.

"So you're saying you bought this thing on a whim for tens of thousands, and it just happened to rise when you cut it?" Zhang Zhaohai said.

"Yeah." Zhang Yang nodded.

"Sell it quickly. As long as the price is decent… that's great now. Your house and car are all settled. No wonder you rejected that girl last time. Turns out you already foresaw today, huh?" Zhang Zhaohai laughed loudly.

"I know what I'm doing. You explain it to Mom. I won't call her," Zhang Yang said before ending the call.

In the afternoon, Zhang Yang drove around with the stone, spending time visiting several jade shops. Eventually, he successfully sold the stone for 3.5 million.

Since Zhang Yang already earned twenty thousand a day, he didn't feel too shocked facing a huge sum like 3.5 million.

But that didn't mean his heart felt nothing.

Even at his current cashback speed, it would still take half a year to accumulate that amount.

Now it was done in one step.

The cash flow in Zhang Yang's hands had become unprecedentedly abundant.

Now he could openly drive the Porsche Cayenne, fill the trunk with all kinds of premium cigarettes and liquor, and happily return home for the May Day holiday.

No better day than today. Zhang Yang turned the car around and went out shopping again.

To be honest, Zhang Yang originally didn't want his father touching cigarettes or alcohol.

Especially cigarettes. His mother had long hated his father smoking.

But thinking about it now, his father spent every day working in the kitchen. A fifty-year-old man who had already lived most of his life-what was wrong with letting him smoke a little?

Even if he didn't live to a hundred, living freely to eighty or ninety was already worth it.

So… buy!

No need to buy too many cigarettes, since they would get damp and wasted. Just buy better ones-Taishan, Da Chong Jiu, and Huangjinye Tianzhiyue. Each cost more than ten thousand per carton, so he bought one carton of each.

As for liquor, it didn't matter how long it was stored. Feitian Moutai and Wuliangye-several boxes of each.

The trunk of the Porsche Cayenne was quickly filled to the brim by Zhang Yang.

And there were only a few days left before he returned home for May Day.

As for explaining the source of his wealth to his parents, it was the same old story and passed over in two chapters.
