Xander exited Ring Three with Parsilla's arm thrown over his shoulder and the medics swarming them from every side.
"Careful with her ribs!" one medic barked.
"Careful with my ribs too," Xander muttered, dragging one foot after the other. "They were also invited to this disaster."
Parsilla gave a weak laugh, then immediately regretted it. Her face twisted, but the smile stayed buried underneath the pain. Even half-conscious and bloodied, she looked annoyingly pleased with herself.
"You're funny," she rasped.
"Yeah," Xander said, breathing hard. "That's what people say before they hit me."
The stretcher team reached them near the edge of the ring. Xander helped lower Parsilla onto it, one trembling hand bracing her shoulder until the medics secured her properly. She looked up at him through a mess of green hair, blood on her mouth, one eye swollen but still bright.
"Next time," she whispered, "I'm not letting you stand back up."
Xander's lips twitched.
"Next time, I'm bringing snacks and a helmet."
That got another breathless laugh out of her before the medics rolled her away.
Xander watched for half a second longer than he meant to.
Then his body reminded him that standing upright was an unpaid job.
He staggered out of the arena lane, blood drying in streaks across his chest and arms. Regeneration was already working, slightly better but not fast enough to make him comfortable. Flesh pulled itself together in slow, itchy pulses. Bruises softened by degrees. The deeper pain in his ribs remained, stubborn as debt.
By the time he reached the contestants' hall, the noise of the arena had dulled behind him, replaced by the tense murmur of surviving fighters, staff, and medics trying very hard not to stare.
Someone in a white medical vest stepped toward him.
"You need treatment."
Xander sank onto a bench near the wall, then immediately slid down until he was sitting on the floor instead. The bench had felt too ambitious.
"I need a lot of things," he said. "A lawyer. A nap. A bathtub full of pasta. But medical treatment?" He waved weakly. "I'll pass."
The medic stared at him.
"You almost collapsed twice walking here."
"Yeah, but I looked cool the second time."
"You have multiple fractures."
"They're shy. They'll come around."
The medic's expression went flat.
Xander sighed and leaned his head back against the wall. "Look, I heal. Slowly, painfully, but I heal. Save the fancy supplies for people who don't regenerate."
The medic looked like he wanted to argue, then noticed the long cut across Xander's side pulling itself shut beneath a dark smear of blood.
His mouth closed.
"Fine. But if you pass out, we're treating you."
The medic walked away muttering something Xander chose not to hear.
Xander let his eyes close for a second.
His entire body throbbed.
That fucking hurt…
His jaw clicked when he shifted it.
She really does hit like a bus. No, not a bus. A bus with childhood trauma and a gym membership.
He opened one eye and grinned despite himself.
These rewards better distract me from the pain.
The system responded as if it had been waiting for him to stop bleeding long enough to read.
Notifications lined up neatly in front of him, blue windows stacked with almost insulting calm.
Xander rubbed blood from the corner of his eye and opened the first one.

Xander stared.
Then stared harder.
His grin widened until it pulled at the split in his lip.
"Ow," he whispered.
Then he grinned anyway.
These pluses are no joke.
Already, the difference in Regeneration was obvious. His wounds weren't vanishing, but the crawl of healing had become steadier, more aggressive. The torn skin near his ribs pinched together. The ache in his shoulder dulled from screaming pain to extremely rude soreness. Even his breathing felt like it had stopped threatening legal action.
Definitely worth it.
His eyes drifted back to the title.
Dexterity plus five.
Perception plus two.
Bloodied Body upgraded.
Scarlet Reprisal hit harder now too.
He leaned his head back against the wall.
The title got way better. Guess almost getting my face caved in by Mosshead came with benefits. Horrifying business model, but effective.
Then his gaze lifted.
Far above the arena floor, the VIP glass reflected flashes of light and movement. He couldn't see Orion Cross through the tint from here, but he could feel the weight of that meeting settling into place again.
Affinity increased.
That alone told him the man had been watching.
Xander opened his full status window.

Xander stared at the top of the window.
Rank: E+
He blinked.
Then slowly smiled again.
E+? Now we're talking.
A low, satisfied laugh escaped him.
I was wondering when that dumb old thing would increase.
Level four. E+. Six more distributable stat points. His HP had jumped to 126, mana to 80. Dexterity was getting ridiculous. Intelligence was finally carrying some weight. Constitution had stopped looking like an afterthought.
And still, the thing that caught in his mind wasn't just the numbers.
It was the complexity.
Normal explorer systems were not like this. They had status readings, aptitude tracking, mana measurements, skill registrations, sure. But not quest chains. Not title evolutions based on crowd perception. Not affinity with former S-rank guild chairmen.
Level four…
His grin faded slightly into something more thoughtful.
This is really feeling more and more like a game.
The thought hung there for a moment.
Then his stomach growled so loudly that two nearby contestants turned to look.
Xander looked down at his abdomen.
The growl came again.
He sighed.
"Oh yeah. I'm not even mad at you this time, tummy." He patted his stomach once, gently. "We deserve a nice big meal after that."
Then reality returned.
He had no cash.
His smile slowly flattened.
"Small problem," he muttered. "I am aggressively broke."
He sat there for a second, considering his options with the solemn intensity of a battlefield commander planning a siege.
Then his eyes lifted again toward the VIP glass.
A sly grin crept across his face.
Free food, he thought, pushing himself carefully to his feet, here I come.
Xander pushed himself fully upright, one hand braced against the wall as Regeneration continued its unpleasant little repair job beneath his skin.
Every breath still had edges.
His ribs weren't broken anymore, or at least not broken enough for the system to bother screaming at him. The pain had settled into a deep, ugly ache that made him reconsider every life decision leading up to "underground tournament after resurrection." Still, the upgraded healing was doing work. The cuts across his chest had thinned into angry red lines. The swelling around his eye was slowly easing. His jaw only clicked every other time he moved it now.
Progress.
He took one step toward the VIP entrance.
Then stopped.
Near the exit of the contestants' hall stood Kari.
The large man waited with his usual quiet presence, arms folded, face calm. The chaos of the arena seemed to part around him without effort. Fighters limped by. Medics rushed past. Staff carried towels, buckets, and medical bags. Kari stood in the middle of it all as if the room had decided he was furniture carved by a mountain.
Xander's tired face lit up before he could stop it.
"Yo! Kari!" he called, voice rough but bright. "Did you see that? I won!"
For a second, he sounded younger than he had all night.
Not the bloodied Phantom. Not the half-dead man who had stood over the Berserker Queen. Just Xander, battered to hell and weirdly proud of himself, carrying a grin that had survived more punishment than his ribs.
Kari looked at him.
Then smiled.
"Well done, Xander," he said. "You truly are unpredictable."
Coming from Kari, that felt almost like a parade.
He lifted one fist.
Xander stared at it for half a heartbeat, then eagerly bumped it with his own.
The impact was light.
It still hurt.
Xander hid the wince poorly.
Kari noticed, but did not mention it.
"I have a fight soon," Kari said. "I must prepare. In the meantime, you should rest. You are in the quarterfinals now."
Xander blinked.
"Quarterfinals, huh?"
He glanced toward the bracket screens beyond the hall, suddenly aware that the tournament had been slicing itself down while he was busy getting turned into modern art.
"How did that happen? I didn't realize we were already that far."
"The field is smaller now," Kari said. "The foolish, the unlucky, and the unprepared have mostly left."
"Mostly?"
Kari's gaze rested on him for a moment.
Xander narrowed his eyes. "I feel judged."
"You are still standing," Kari said. "That is its own argument."
"See, that's why I like you. You insult people in ancient proverb format."
Kari's mouth twitched.
Then he stepped closer and gave Xander a light pat on the back.
Light by Kari's standards meant Xander moved forward one whole step and nearly made a noise unfit for public dignity.
"Ow!" Xander snapped, twisting halfway around. "I'm still hurt, Kari!"
Kari looked mildly apologetic.
"Forgive me."
Xander rubbed his back with a pained grimace. "Nah, it's fine. Just, you know, maybe don't encourage me with bear paws until my bones stop filing complaints."
"I will remember."
"Thanks for the encouragement, though." Xander straightened as much as he could. "Good luck in your next fight. I'll leave you to meditate, empty your mind, do mysterious mountain-man violence prep. Whatever the brand is."
Kari nodded. "Eat. Recover. Watch if you can."
"Oh, I'm way ahead of you on eat."
As if summoned by disrespect, Xander's stomach growled loudly enough to make one nearby fighter glance over in concern.
Xander put one hand over it.
"See? Tactical agreement."
He hurried away toward the arena exit, or at least hurried by the standards of someone who had recently survived Parsilla trying to turn him into a cautionary stain.
Behind him, Kari watched him go.
"What a strange man," he murmured.
Then he smiled and turned back toward the preparation area.
The moment Xander stepped into view of the lower crowd, the arena noticed.
It started as a few shouts.
Then more.
Then a whole section near the rail erupted as people recognized the bloodied red-haired fighter limping through the walkway beneath the VIP level.
"SCARLET!"
"PHANTOM!"
"Yo, show us the flames!"
"Bet on him next round! I'm telling you!"
"He's gonna die next fight!"
"Yeah, but he's gonna die expensive!"
One man in a bright purple jacket climbed halfway onto his seat, waving a betting slip over his head.
"Five grand on Scarlet Phantom next match!" he screamed toward a nearby bookie. "I don't care who he fights! Put it in! Put it in before the odds get ugly!"
The bookie stared at him. "Sir, you already lost eight hundred tonight."
"That was before I found religion!"
Xander looked at the crowd.
People were pointing. Laughing. Chanting. Some still booed, but even the boos had changed flavor. Less dismissal. More challenge. More curiosity. More hunger.
He had become part of the show.
A dangerous part.
All the people who come here seriously need therapy.
A slow, helpless grin tugged at his mouth.
But I'd be lying if I said this doesn't feel kind of good.
That little spark of pride warmed him more than he expected. Not clean pride. Not heroic pride. Messy, blood-smeared, probably medically inadvisable pride. But after being dead, broke, hunted, and treated like a joke, hearing the arena scream his name with even a little respect hit somewhere deep.
Then two bodies crashed into his personal space with all the grace of drunk bulldogs.
"Yoo, kid!"
TJ reached him first and slapped his shoulder.
Not hard.
Still hard enough that Xander's soul briefly considered moving out.
"Ghh, careful!" Xander hissed. "I am held together by spite and upgraded meat glue right now."
Jerry ignored the warning completely, grabbed him under the arms, and lifted him into the air.
"You did it!" Jerry shouted, spinning him half a turn before Xander could process the betrayal. "You actually beat her!"
Xander's eyes went wide.
"Jerry. Jerry, put me down. My ribs are negotiating with gravity right now."
Jerry set him down fast, hands raised. "My bad, my bad."
TJ was grinning so hard it looked painful. "Bro, you beat Mosshead. Do you understand that? You beat the Berserker Queen. She was out there smiling like a horror movie and you still folded her."
"Folded is generous," Xander said, rubbing his side. "It was more like we both got put through a blender and I remained…. slightly more vertical."
Jerry jabbed a finger at him. "That's winning."
"Barely."
"Barely winning is still winning," TJ said. "Ask any criminal lawyer."
Xander blinked at him. "Why do you know that?"
TJ looked away. "Life experience."
Jerry leaned in, eyes bright. "Man, when you stayed standing? I almost lost my mind. TJ did lose his mind."
"I still haven't found it," TJ said proudly.
Xander laughed, and the laugh turned into a pained cough halfway through. He pressed a hand to his ribs, but the smile stayed.
"Thanks for cheering for me, guys," he said after a moment, quieter than before. "It's… surprisingly helpful."
Jerry's expression softened.
TJ scratched the back of his head, suddenly allergic to sincerity.
"Yeah, well," TJ said, "don't make it weird."
Jerry nodded. "We're still gonna make fun of you if you get knocked out ugly."
"Comforting. Truly."
Then Xander's stomach made a sound that could only be described as an internal beast knocking over furniture.
All three of them went silent.
Xander's face changed.
His expression flattened into something robotic. His posture stiffened. His movements became mechanical as he slowly turned toward the VIP entrance.
"However," he said in a dead, formal tone, "I must now go and receive nourishment and acknowledgment."
TJ stared at him.
Jerry stared too.
"What the hell was that voice?" TJ asked.
"My body has entered emergency dinner mode."
Jerry pointed toward the food stands. "There's food down here."
"I am broke."
"So?"
"So I have recently acquired rich-people access." Xander's eyes lifted toward the VIP level. A sly grin slid into place. "And if rich people are good for anything, it's having food they didn't personally earn."
TJ clutched his chest. "That's beautiful."
Jerry wiped an imaginary tear. "He's growing up so fast."
Xander started jogging toward the VIP door, then immediately slowed because jogging was ambitious and possibly illegal for his current rib situation.
"I'll bring back food if I can!" he called over his shoulder.
TJ cupped his hands around his mouth. "Grab something expensive!"
Jerry shouted, "And something with meat!"
"Define meat!" Xander yelled back.
"The thing animals use to lose arguments!"
Xander snorted and kept moving.
Near the VIP entrance, the same butler-like man in the black suit stood waiting.
Of course he was there.
Clean suit. Straight posture. Expression professionally empty. The man looked like he had never sweated in his life and considered blinking a personal weakness.
He gave Xander one long look.
Bloodied clothes. Swollen face. somewhat healed cuts. Limping walk. Hungry eyes.
One eyebrow rose.
Xander stopped in front of him and pointed at the eyebrow.
"Was that emotion? Did we just have a moment?"
The man said nothing.
He turned and opened the door.
Xander grinned. "I'll take that as a yes."
The suited man stepped inside.
Xander followed him into the quieter corridor, and the arena's noise immediately muffled behind reinforced walls again. The shift from chaos to luxury still felt wrong. One second, people screamed for blood. The next, the hallway smelled like polished stone, expensive alcohol, and secrets with security clearance.
They reached the private elevator.
The man pressed his fingers to the silver panel.
A soft chime answered.
Xander leaned against the wall beside him, trying to look casual and failing because his whole body looked like it had been audited by violence.
"So," Xander said, "do you have a name, or should I just keep calling you emotionally unavailable Alfred?"
No response.
The elevator doors opened.
They stepped inside.
Xander watched the floor indicator rise.
"Strong silent type, huh? Respect. Terrible for conversation, great for dramatic entrances."
Nothing.
"Blink twice if you're secretly a robot."
The man stared forward.
Xander nodded slowly. "Okay. Blink zero times if that hit too close to home."
Still nothing.
"Wow," Xander muttered. "You're good."
The elevator chimed.
3F: VIP LOUNGE
The doors slid open, revealing the quiet upper level once more.
Xander pushed away from the wall and followed the suited man out, stomach growling again as they walked beneath the star-like ceiling lights.
"Just so we're clear," he said to the man's back, "if there's a charcuterie board in there, I'm not asking permission. I almost died for guild networking. I've earned cheese."
The suited man continued forward without answering.
But this time, Xander was almost sure the man's eyebrow twitched.
The double doors to Orion Cross's room opened before Xander could knock.
The suited man stepped aside with the same silent precision as before, one gloved hand resting lightly on the handle. His face remained unreadable, but Xander was starting to suspect that unreadable was just the man's default language.
"Thanks, Emotionally Unavailable Alfred," Xander said as he passed.
The man did not respond.
"Still workshopping the name. We'll get there."
Inside, the room looked exactly as it had before. Quiet luxury. Tinted glass. A private view of the arena below. The scent of smoke, polished wood, and expensive food hung in the air. On one side of the room, a table had been set with several dishes: sliced steak resting under a silver warmer, small pastries, fruit, cheeses, smoked fish, crackers, and a black tin of caviar that looked rich enough to have a legal team.
Orion Cross sat on the leather couch, one arm draped along the backrest, a faint smile already waiting on his face. The blue-haired man stood near the wall again, though his glare had lost some of its bite. He still looked like he would rather swallow a knife than applaud, but at least now he looked like he respected the knife.
"Xander," Orion greeted. "Congratulations."
Xander gave him a tired salute that looked more like his arm had filed a complaint halfway through.
"Thanks. I'd bow, but my ribs are currently unionizing."
Orion's smile deepened. "Understandable. Parsilla Veyra has forced many better-rested men to reconsider their life choices."
"Yeah, well, she makes a strong argument with her fists."
Xander's eyes slid toward the food table.
He tried to be subtle.
He failed immediately.
Orion noticed and lifted one hand in permission. "Please. Eat before you start eyeing the furniture."
Xander was already walking. "That is incredibly thoughtful, sir."
He picked up a small cracker topped with caviar, sniffed it, then popped it into his mouth.
His expression froze.
For one moment, he looked like he had discovered a wealthy secret and wasn't sure whether to respect it or rob it.
"Huh," he said. "So this is what money tastes like."
The blue-haired man's brow twitched.
Orion let out a quiet chuckle. "Careful. That tin costs more than most rental deposits."
Xander paused with another cracker halfway to his mouth.
Then ate it anyway.
"Good. Then I'm making financially responsible choices."
Despite himself, the blue-haired man almost reacted. Not a smile. Not even close. But the corner of his mouth threatened rebellion before discipline crushed it.
Orion leaned forward slightly, studying Xander more closely.
"You are recovering faster than before."
Xander glanced down at the red lines fading across his arms and chest. Most of the cuts had sealed. Bruises still painted him in ugly patches, and his face was swollen in places, but compared to how he had looked after the fight, he was practically showroom damaged.
"Yeah. Got a little upgrade."
"A little?" Orion said.
"As for your new documents and credentials, I have already taken measures to prepare them."
Xander stopped chewing.
That got his full attention.
Orion continued calmly. "You will have a new legal identity with the same first name. Clean background. Usable records. Nothing extravagant enough to invite questions, but enough to let you move without tripping every official alarm tied to your former status."
Xander swallowed slowly.
"That fast?"
"I told you such matters could be handled."
"Yeah, but people say things like that all the time." Xander's tone stayed casual, but something quieter moved beneath it. "Usually right before handing you a form and telling you to wait six to eight business nightmares."
Orion smiled faintly. "I dislike paperwork delays."
"Powerful stance. Very brave."
"You will also be welcome to take the aptitude test at the Silver Sphinx Guild whenever you feel ready," Orion said. "Officially, we will need a baseline. Unofficially, I suspect the result will be… interesting."
The blue-haired man finally spoke.
"It will also determine how much supervision he requires."
His voice was cool, precise, and far less openly hostile than before. Still not friendly. But no longer dismissive.
Xander looked at him. "That's the nicest threat I've heard all week."
"It was not a threat."
"See, that's what made it classy."
The blue-haired man stared at him.
Xander stared back with a tired, bloodied little smile.
Orion seemed faintly amused by the exchange.
"Xander," he said, drawing the focus back. "Welcome to the Silver Sphinx. It is a pleasure."
The words landed heavier than Xander expected.
A guild.
A real guild.
Not Giovanni's dirty little death funnel. Not a desperate spam email. Not some low-rank scam built on hungry people and bad odds. The Silver Sphinx. Orion Cross. Aegis Reliquary. Documents. Tests. A possible future that didn't start with running and end with hiding.
Xander set the steak down for half a second and gave Orion a more respectful nod.
"Thank you," he said.
Orion reached into the inside pocket of his suit and withdrew a card. It was matte black, trimmed in silver, with the Silver Sphinx emblem embossed in the corner. The name Aegis Reliquary Industries gleamed along the bottom in small metallic lettering.
He held it out.
Xander took it carefully.
"What's this?"
"A provisional guild account card. It contains store credit usable at Aegis Reliquary locations and approved partner vendors. Armor, utility artifacts, storage equipment, recovery supplies, weapon accessories, basic explorer gear. Consider it an investment."
Xander looked down at the card.
Then up at him.
"How much credit?"
Orion's smile returned.
"Enough that you should try not to embarrass me by buying only food."
Xander's face remained solemn.
"I make no promises I cannot keep."
The blue-haired man sighed softly.
Orion stood, smoothing the front of his suit.
"You have earned rest, food, and a chance to prepare. But do not mistake acceptance for completion. Joining the Silver Sphinx opens a door. Walking through it properly is another matter."
Xander slipped the card into his pocket with unusual care.
"Understood. Door opened. Don't trip over the fancy carpet."
"A crude summary," Orion said. "But not inaccurate."
Xander picked up a plate and began loading it with steak, crackers, and what was probably too much caviar for a man who had first tasted it two minutes ago.
The blue-haired man stared.
"Are you taking that with you?"
Xander paused.
"Was I not supposed to?"
"It is not customary."
Xander looked at the plate. Then at Orion. Then at the blue-haired man.
"I have two emotionally unstable investors downstairs who screamed my name while I was getting beaten into soup. I'd like to bring them steak."
Orion's mouth twitched. "Let him."
The blue-haired man closed his eyes for half a second, as if asking some private god for patience.
Xander added another slice of steak.
"For morale."
"And the caviar?" the blue-haired man asked.
Xander lifted the small tin.
"For culture."
Orion actually laughed.
"Go, Xander. Eat. Rest. Prepare."
Xander gave him another nod, more genuine this time.
"I'll do my best not to make you regret this."
"That," Orion said, "would be boring."
The butler opened the door.
Xander stepped out with his plate, the card in his pocket, and enough expensive food to offend at least three social classes.
The suited man escorted him down the quiet VIP corridor.
Xander walked beside him, chewing on a piece of steak.
"So," he said, "now that I'm basically guild-adjacent, do I get to know your name?"
No answer.
"Is it classified?"
No answer.
"Is it actually Alfred? Because if it is, this is going to be spiritually confusing."
The man continued forward.
Xander took another bite. "Emotionally Unavailable Alfred does have a ring to it, though. E.U.A. Sounds like a government agency that denies hugs."
The man's pace did not change.
They reached the elevator.
The doors opened.
They stepped inside.
Xander leaned against the wall, plate balanced carefully in one hand. "You know, silence is only mysterious the first three times…"
The elevator hummed downward.
Still nothing.
Xander sighed. "Fine. I'll just call you Alfred until you crack."
A beat passed.
Then, without looking at him, the man spoke.
"My name is not Alfred."
Xander froze.
Slowly, his face lit up.
"I knew you had a voice."
The man stared forward.
"My name is Elliot."
Xander pointed at him with a piece of steak. "Elliot. Strong name. Very brooding. Still emotionally unavailable, but now with branding."
Elliot's eyebrow twitched.
The elevator doors opened.
"Do not get blood on the carpet again," Elliot said.
Xander stepped out, grinning. "Again? So you were paying attention."
Elliot did not respond, but as he turned away, Xander was almost certain he heard the faintest sigh of defeat.
By the time Xander reached the lower area again, Jerry and TJ were still near the rail.
Only this time, they were not celebrating.
They stood stiffly, both looking up at one of the large bracket screens. Jerry's arms hung at his sides. TJ had one hand over his mouth, eyes wide in a way Xander did not like.
Xander approached with the plate held proudly.
"Good news," he said. "I have secured meat and rich-people fish paste."
Neither responded.
Xander's grin faded slightly.
"Wow. Tough crowd. I risked awkward elevator conversation for this."
Jerry finally looked at him.
His expression was tense.
TJ pointed upward without saying a word.
Xander followed the direction of his finger.
The bracket screen had updated.
[QUARTERFINAL MATCH]
Scarlet Phantom
VS
Sol "King of the Ring"
For a moment, Xander forgot to chew.
The arena noise seemed to stretch out around him.
Sol.
The same Sol who had been immune until the quarterfinals. The same fighter Kari had called King of the Ring. The calm monster on the VIP railing who had made his warm-up opponent's legs look like spoiled fruit.
Xander swallowed slowly.
Then the system chimed.
A blue window opened in front of him.
