Glynda: That Kaito hasn't even bothered to find a partner. He's been standing on air for the better part of the last hour, and quite frankly I think he's an arrogant welp who's going to get himself killed. (tapping the screen) But it seems the other pairs have formed. Nora Valkyrie and Lie Ren. Poor boy… I can't possibly imagine those two getting along. Still, he's probably better off than Miss Nikos. (the feed shifts to Pyrrha and Jaune moving through the woods)
Ozpin: Mmmm.
Glynda: I don't care what his transcripts say. That Jaune fellow is not ready for this level of combat. (she deactivated the tablet and stepped back) I suppose we'll find out soon enough. At their current pace they should reach the temple within just a few minutes. (turning back) Speaking of which what did you use as relics this year? (silence) Professor Ozpin?
Ozpin didn't answer. His tablet showed Ruby Rose sitting cross-legged in the grass, picking stray leaves from her cape, while Weiss Schnee walked in a confident circle around her.
Weiss: It's definitely this way. (stops, reverses) I mean this way. It's definitely this way. (stops in front of Ruby) Alright. It's official. We passed it.
Ruby: (standing, mildly exasperated) Weiss, why can't you just admit you have no idea where we're going?
Weiss: Because I know exactly where we're going! We're going… to the forest temple!
Ruby: (sighs)
Weiss: Oh, stop it! You don't know where we are either!
Ruby: Well, at least I'm not pretending like I know everything.
Weiss: What is that supposed to mean?
Ruby: It means you're a big, stupid jerk and I hate you!
Weiss: (spinning and walking in another direction) Just keep moving.
Ruby: (in a pitch-perfect imitation of Weiss) Oh, just keep moving! Hurry up! Waaaah! Watch where you're going! (back to her own voice) Why are you so bossy (she stopped herself, a look of quiet horror crossing her face) Oh god. I just did what Kaito normally does.
She stared at nothing for a moment, genuinely disturbed.
Weiss: (turning back) I'm not bossy! Don't say things like that!
Ruby: Stop treating me like a kid!
Weiss: Stop acting like a kid!
Ruby: Stop acting like you're perfect!
Weiss: I'm. Not. Perfect. Not yet. But I'm still leagues better than you. (she walked away)
Ruby: (quietly, to herself) You don't even know me…
Yang and Blake stepped out of the treeline into a clearing, the circular stone temple ahead of them — broken and weathered but standing, platforms holding small black and gold objects around its inner ring.
Yang: Think this is it?
Blake gave her a look and walked down the hill. Yang followed.
Blake: (picking up a black king piece, puzzled) Chess pieces?
Yang: Some of them are missing. Looks like we weren't the first ones here.
Blake: Well I suppose we pick one.
Yang: (studying a golden knight, then holding it up) How about a cute little pony?
Blake: (a slight smirk) Sure.
They moved toward each other across the temple floor.
Yang: That wasn't too hard.
Blake: It's not like this place is very difficult to find. (she glanced at Yang, and they shared something that was almost a smile)
Jaune held a short burning torch aloft. The cave drawings to either side depicted armed figures against enormous beasts.
Jaune: Think this is it?
Pyrrha: I'm not sure this is it.
Jaune: (sighing) Pyrrha, I made the torch. Could you at least humour me for five more feet?
He tripped. The torch hit a puddle and went out. Darkness.
Pyrrha: Do you… feel that?
Jaune: Soul-crushing regret?
Pyrrha: No, it's… warm.
Ahead of them, a point of golden light pulsed in the dark.
Jaune: (face lighting up) That's the relic! (he reached for it it shifted away) Hey! Bad relic he lunged and caught it as it rose, dangling above the ground) Gotcha!
Pyrrha: Jaune
The golden glow dropped him neatly in front of two enormous, glowing red eyes.
Jaune's scream carried all the way to the temple.
Yang: (turning toward it) Some girl's in trouble! Blake, did you hear (she turned to find Blake staring at something overhead) Blake?
At the cave mouth, Pyrrha burst out just ahead of the Deathstalker crashing through the rock behind her. Jaune swung from its stinger, still going.
Jaune: Help! Why?! Pyrrha, this is NOT the relic it's NOT do something
Pyrrha: (levelling Miló) Jaune, whatever you do, don't let the tail whipped back and launched him across the forest) …go.
She looked at the Deathstalker. It snapped its claws. She smiled apologetically and ran.
Ruby: (falling from the sky) Heads uuuuuuuuup!
Jaune Arc came through the trees horizontally at speed and collected her mid-fall, redirecting them both into a tree to Yang and Blake's left. Ruby blinked at the stars circling her head.
Ruby: Ohhh… what was that?
Jaune: (hanging upside-down above her) Hey, Ruby.
Blake: (looking at the tree) Did your sister just fall from the sky?
Yang: I…
Something crashed out of the forest. An Ursa, claws swinging — then a pink blast took it in the back and it went down, depositing its rider.
Nora: YEEEE-HAAAAW! (rolls off, looks back at the carcass, genuinely saddened) Awww… It's broken.
Ren: (arriving behind her, leaning on the creature, panting) Nora. Please. Don't ever do that again.
He looked up. The pink dotted outline of where Nora had been stood empty. He looked around frantically.
In the temple, Nora was already holding a golden rook, dancing.
Nora: I'm queen of the castle! I'm queen of the castle!
Ren: (off-screen) NORA!
Nora: (saluting, dropping the relic into her palm) Coming, Ren! (skips off)
Blake: Did that girl just ride in on an Ursa?
Yang: I…
Pyrrha burst out of the treeline. Behind her, the Deathstalker uprooted trees.
Pyrrha: Jaune!
Jaune: Pyrrha!
Ruby: (standing on the branch, staring at the Grimm) Whoa. (she dropped into a roll and hit the ground running)
Jaune: Ruby!
Yang: Ruby!
Ruby: (arms open) Yang!
Nora: Nora! (appears between them, knocks them both sideways)
The Deathstalker kept coming.
Blake: Did she just run all the way here with a Deathstalker on her tail?
Yang: (getting angrier, eyes flickering red, a small burst of fire) I cannot take it anymore — can everyone just chill out for two seconds before something crazy happens again?!
A clock ticked down two seconds. Ren reached Nora. Blake and Ruby looked up.
Ruby: …Yang? (tugs her sleeve, points)
Weiss dangled from a talon the size of her torso, attached to a Nevermore the size of a building.
Weiss: (looking down) How could you leave me?!
Ruby: I said jump!
Blake: She's going to fall.
Ruby: She'll be fine.
Ren: She's falling.
Jaune dropped from the branch, arms wide, and caught her in a moment that slowed considerably more than physics required. He smiled.
Jaune: Just… dropping in?
They both looked down at the ground, still some distance away.
Jaune: Oh, God. Oh, noooooo (faceplant) Oomph.
Weiss landed seated on his back.
Weiss: My hero.
Jaune: My back.
The Deathstalker kept coming. Pyrrha skidded to a halt at the group's feet.
Yang: Great! The gang's all here! Now we can die together!
Ruby: Not if I can help it! (battle cry, charging forward)
Yang: Ruby, wait!
Ruby fired Crescent Rose and drove at the Deathstalker. It swiped her sideways. She hit the ground and got up.
Ruby: D Don't worry! Totally fine!
She shot it in the skull and sprinted, the Grimm pivoting to follow. Yang ran forward. The Nevermore shrieked overhead, releasing a volley of hardened feathers that pinned Ruby's cape to the ground and cut Yang off.
Yang: Ruby, get out of there!
Ruby: I'm trying!
The Deathstalker raised its stinger above her. She looked up. Nowhere to go.
Yang: (reaching, too far away) RUBY!
A white blur crossed the space between them and caught the stinger an inch from Ruby's chest.
Kaito: (straightening up, glancing back at the Deathstalker with mild interest) Man. Look at you trying to show off on my friend. I'm almost impressed.
He turned to face it properly.
Red gathered in the air between his fingers, repulsive force bleeding off it like heat and then the Deathstalker simply wasn't there anymore. The dust settled where it had been.
Ruby: (exhaling, hands clasped) Normal knees… (she opened her eyes and watched the last of it dissolve) Kaito, you're here yay!
Weiss: …
Yang reached Ruby in three strides and pulled her into a hug.
Yang: So happy you're okay. (they stared at each other, then both looked up at the Nevermore still circling)
Jaune: Guys? That thing's circling back. What are we gonna do?
Weiss: There's no sense in dilly-dallying. Our objective is right in front of us.
Everyone looked at the relics.
Ruby: She's right. Our mission is to grab an artifact and get back to the cliffs. (she nodded to Weiss) No point fighting these things.
Jaune: Run and live I can absolutely get behind that.
Ruby crossed to the nearest pedestal and took the gold knight. Jaune picked up a gold rook and grinned at her. The Deathstalker's ice cracked behind them.
Ren: Time to leave.
Ruby: Right. (she waved the group forward) Let's go!
Yang and Blake hung back a half-step. Blake watched Ruby leap onto a boulder and gesture everyone onward like she'd been doing it her whole life.
Blake: What is it?
Yang: (quietly proud) Nothing. (she moved on. Blake smiled and followed.)
The group spread through the abandoned structures as the Nevermore descended, perching on a high column and cawing down at them. They pressed flat against the stonework.
Yang: Well, that's just great.
Kaito: Don't worry about it. I can deal with this one, unless you'd rather pitch in?
Yang: Mhm. Nah, go ahead, buddy.
Ruby: Nope. (she looked at Weiss, Yang, and Blake) We four take care of the Nevermore.
Yang: But he offered
Ruby: We can't always rely on Kaito to deal with everything.
Yang: (sighing) I guess you're right.
One fight scene later.
Jane let out sigh if Relief
Nora oh we can help
One fight scene later.
The Ceremony Team Assignments
Ozpin: Team RWBY Ruby Rose, Weiss Schnee, Yang Xiao Long, and Blake Belladonna. Led by Ruby Rose.
Kaito: (raising a hand) Unrelated
I never found a partner. What happens to me?
Ozpin: Given the skill you've demonstrated,
you'll be placed as a solo reserve. You're free to take on independent missions once you've proven sufficient capability operating alone.
A pause.
Ozpin: As for your dorm room you'll need to room with another team.
Ruby & Yang: (in unison) He can room with us.
Kaito: Are your other team members actually okay with that?
Weiss: I am not.
Blake: I don't mind.
Yang: Motion passed three against one.
Weiss: That is not how voting works
Later That Night Ozpin's Office
Glynda: Ozpin. We had plenty of available rooms. Why place Kaito with Team RWBY?
Ozpin lifted his mug and took a slow, contemplative sip.
Ozpin: Simple. Revenge on Tai and Qrow for breaking my favourite mug.
He sipped again.
Ozpin: Besides a small, genuine smile settled across his face as he looked back out at the dark academy) it's going to be enormously amusing to see what happens.
An) sorry this chapter took a bit on trying to figure out where to go
