I stared at the file Marshall had sent me a few minutes earlier, my eyes fixed on the contents, completely still as the weight of what I was reading sank deeper into me.
For a moment, I couldn't even react.
I was dumbfounded.
Theresa had actually gone through all of this…far more than I had ever imagined. Each page revealed another layer of pain, humiliation, and struggle that she had silently endured without anyone truly stepping in for her.
And the more I read, the heavier something became inside my chest.
A strange, unspoken vow formed in me at that moment.
I would never make things difficult for her again.
No matter what it took, I would obey her words, her decisions, her boundaries—everything she said, I would respect without hesitation. If she needed space, I would give it. If she needed protection, I would be there.
But that didn't erase the other emotion rising within me.
Because Alex still had to pay.
