Chapter 9 - Chapter Eight: The Road Alone

The gates closed behind me.

No sound.

No ceremony.

Just… final.

I didn't look back.

There was nothing left for me there.

The path ahead stretched into the forest dark, unfamiliar, endless.

Good.

I walked.

Step after step.

No guards.

No voices.

No chains.

Just me.

And the silence.

My chest felt… strange.

Not heavy.

Not light.

Just empty.

I exhaled slowly.

"Free," I whispered.

The word felt foreign.

My wolf stirred.

Not restless this time.

Steady.

Watching.

Listening.

We were alone now.

The deeper I went, the quieter it got.

No pack scent.

No territory markers.

Nothing.

Just wild land.

Untouched.

Unclaimed.

Dangerous.

A branch snapped somewhere behind me.

I stopped.

Listened.

Nothing.

Wind.

Leaves.

Silence again.

I kept walking.

But slower now.

More aware.

Every sound mattered out here.

Every shadow.

Every shift in the air.

Hours passed.

Or maybe less.

Time feels different now.

The sky darkened.

Night settling in.

Cold followed quickly.

I wrapped my arms around myself but didn't stop.

Stopping meant thinking.

And thinking…

It was dangerous.

A scent hit me.

Faint.

But there.

I froze.

Not a wolf.

Not human.

Something else.

My wolf reacted instantly.

Alert.

Focused.

Danger.

I turned slowly.

Scanning.

Nothing.

But the scent lingered.

Watching me.

Hunting.

My heart picked up.

"Not tonight," I muttered.

I took a step back.

Then another.

Careful.

Quiet.

The forest felt different now.

Closer.

Tighter.

Like it was closing in.

A low growl echoed.

Not far.

My body tensed.

"Show yourself," I said.

Silence.

Then

Movement.

Fast.

A shadow darted between trees.

Too quick to track.

Not normal.

Definitely not normal.

My wolf pushed forward.

Ready.

Even without shifting.

Even without strength.

We would fight.

We had to.

Another sound.

Closer this time.

Circling.

Testing.

I clenched my fists.

"Try it," I warned.

My voice didn't shake.

Good.

Because I meant it.

Then

It stepped out.

Not fully.

Just enough.

Eyes.

Glowing.

Wrong.

Too bright.

Too empty.

My breath slowed.

"Not a wolf…" I whispered.

The creature tilted its head.

Studying me.

Like I was something new.

Something… interesting.

Great.

Just what I needed.

It moved again

Closer.

I didn't step back.

Not this time.

"I'm not prey," I said.

The words felt solid.

Real.

Mine.

My wolf growled low.

A warning.

A challenge.

For a second

Everything held still.

Then

The creature lunged.

Fast.

Too fast.

I barely had time to react

But I moved.

Side-step.

Turn.

Dodge.

Clumsy.

But enough.

Its claws missed me by inches.

I stumbled

Caught myself

Turned again.

"Wrong target," I snapped.

My heart pounded.

But I didn't freeze.

Didn't break.

Not anymore.

It circled again.

Slower now.

Cautious.

Good.

It was learned.

So did I.

A strange warmth flickered in my chest.

Small.

But there.

My wolf pushed forward

Stronger.

Not fully shifted.

But present.

Power.

Faint.

But growing.

I felt it.

And for the first time since everything

I smiled.

"Come again," I said.

The creature hesitated.

Then

It backed away.

Slowly.

Watching me.

Then disappeared into the trees.

Gone.

Just like that.

Silence returned.

But it felt different now.

Not empty.

Not lonely.

Alive.

I exhaled.

My body is finally relaxing.

"You picked the wrong girl," I muttered.

My wolf agreed.

I looked ahead.

Into the darkness.

Into the unknown.

And this time

I didn't feel lost.

I felt ready.
