Chapter 36 - Chapter 36 — Infection

The chamber remained silent after Shen Luo spoke.

Not dramatic silence.

Measured silence.

The kind that appears when everyone in the room understands the situation has crossed into something irreversible.

---

Elder Han dispersed the formation map with a wave of his sleeve. The glowing convergence points vanished instantly, leaving only cold stone and dim formation lamps behind.

For several moments, no one moved.

Then the elder said:

"Show me your arm."

Direct. Calm.

More dangerous than suspicion.

---

Wei Jun's eyes shifted immediately toward Shen Luo.

He understood the implication at once.

The corpses. The convergence marks. The behavioral changes.

And Shen Luo—the only known survivor of direct exposure to the western ridge collapse.

---

Refusing would create certainty.

Compliance carried different risks.

Neither option was good.

---

Shen Luo slowly pulled back his sleeve.

The black fractures beneath his skin had spread further since the previous night. Thin branching patterns extended across his forearm toward the center of his palm now, subtle distortions flickering faintly beneath the surface like damaged reflections trapped inside flesh.

Wei Jun's expression hardened immediately.

Elder Han's did not change at all.

Which meant he expected worse.

---

The elder stepped closer.

Not hurriedly.

Carefully.

His eyes studied the fractures without touching them.

Then:

"Activate your technique."

Wei Jun looked at him sharply.

"Han—"

"I know."

The elder never looked away from Shen Luo's arm.

"Do it."

---

Shen Luo hesitated only briefly.

Not because he feared pain.

Because he understood what Elder Han was truly asking.

Observation.

Measurement.

Evaluation.

---

Still, he raised his hand.

Focused.

And activated Void Grasp.

---

The distortion appeared instantly.

More violently than before.

The air around his hand folded inward with a sharp ripple, causing the nearby formation lamps to flicker simultaneously. A low pressure spread through the underground chamber as space compressed unnaturally around his fingers.

And this time—

the technique activated too easily.

---

Pain followed a heartbeat later.

Shen Luo's arm trembled violently as the fractures beneath his skin brightened darkly for an instant before stabilizing again.

He immediately released the technique.

The distortion vanished.

But the silence afterward felt heavier.

---

Wei Jun spoke first.

"…That wasn't Qi manipulation."

"No," Elder Han said quietly.

"It wasn't."

---

The elder finally stepped back.

For the first time since Shen Luo met him, genuine concern appeared in his eyes.

Not fear of Shen Luo.

Fear of implication.

---

"How long until loss of control?" Elder Han asked.

Shen Luo lowered his sleeve again.

"I don't know."

Honest answer.

---

The elder studied him carefully.

"You feel the pathway even when inactive now."

Again, not a question.

Shen Luo nodded once.

"Yes."

"How often?"

"…Increasingly."

Wei Jun exhaled slowly through his nose.

"You say things like that too calmly."

---

Shen Luo looked at him.

"Panic wouldn't improve the situation."

"No," Wei Jun replied.

"But it would make you sound more human."

---

That landed harder than intended.

Because part of Shen Luo already understood the truth inside it.

---

Since the western ridge collapse, emotions felt… distant.

Not absent.

Muted.

As though the pathway continuously stripped away unnecessary reactions in favor of clarity.

Efficiency disguised as calm.

---

And suddenly, the entity's final condition became far more disturbing.

---

Elder Han interrupted the thought.

"The attacking disciple from earlier—"

He paused briefly.

"—showed weaker versions of the same marks."

Wei Jun looked sharply toward Shen Luo again.

"…Meaning this spreads through exposure?"

"Not exactly," Shen Luo said.

Both men looked at him.

---

He chose his words carefully.

"Exposure begins the process."

A pause.

"Resonance accelerates it."

Wei Jun frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"It means the pathway doesn't infect everyone equally."

Shen Luo looked toward the underground tunnels beyond the chamber.

"It responds to compatibility."

---

The room became still again.

Because that implication was worse than ordinary contamination.

---

Random disease could be isolated.

Selective resonance could not.

---

Elder Han's expression darkened slightly.

"…You believe some cultivators are naturally susceptible."

"Yes."

"And the others?"

"Temporary contact. Distortion. Instability."

Shen Luo paused.

"Then death."

---

Wei Jun leaned against one of the stone pillars and closed his eyes briefly.

"…Wonderful."

---

Elder Han ignored the comment.

"What determines compatibility?"

"I don't know."

Not fully true.

But close enough.

---

The pathway clearly favored certain mental structures.

Adaptability. Detachment. Capacity for convergence.

Perhaps even ambition itself.

But Shen Luo lacked enough information to confirm the pattern.

And some truths were dangerous to say aloud before understanding them completely.

---

A sudden vibration interrupted the chamber.

Subtle.

But unmistakable.

---

All three men looked toward the tunnel entrance simultaneously.

Another vibration followed.

This time stronger.

---

Elder Han's expression changed instantly.

"…Impossible."

Wei Jun straightened away from the pillar.

"That came from above."

Not the western ridge.

Not the eastern gardens.

Closer.

---

Much closer.

---

Then a sect bell rang overhead.

Once.

Twice.

Three times.

Slow and heavy.

Emergency summons.

---

Wei Jun cursed quietly.

"That's the inner sect alarm."

Elder Han was already moving toward the tunnel exit.

"Come."

---

The three of them ascended rapidly through the underground passages.

The vibrations grew stronger the higher they climbed.

Not earthquakes.

Pressure waves.

Uneven pulses moving through the mountain itself.

---

By the time they emerged near the central inner court, chaos had already begun spreading through the sect.

Disciples filled the stone pathways. Inner sect patrols moved rapidly between halls. Formation lights activated across multiple peaks simultaneously.

And overhead—

the sky itself looked wrong.

---

Spiritual clouds above Qingyun Mountain had begun rotating unnaturally around the central summit, forming a vast spiraling distortion directly above the sect.

The Qi flow across the entire mountain range had destabilized.

---

Shen Luo stopped walking.

Not from shock.

Recognition.

---

"The pathway is converging again," he said quietly.

Wei Jun looked upward.

"…From where?"

Shen Luo's eyes moved toward the tallest mountain peak at the center of Qingyun Sect.

The oldest part of the sect.

The most restricted area.

---

And suddenly—

he understood.

---

The western ridge had never been the true core.

It was only the seal.

---

The actual convergence point had always existed beneath the heart of Qingyun Sect itself.

---

Elder Han understood at the exact same moment.

Shen Luo saw it in his face.

The old man went pale for the first time.

---

"…The ancestral grounds."

---

Then the mountain shook.
