Rin looked as if she had just been fished out of a river. She wore only a simple black shinobi outfit, which was now completely transparent and heavy, clinging to her skin as it was thoroughly drenched in sweat.
The first time fusing Senjutsu chakra had drained every ounce of her stamina. She lay collapsed on the floor, gasping for air, unable to lift even a finger. Covered in a mix of perspiration and laboratory dust, she looked utterly disheveled.
So this is what real exhaustion feels like... I just want to stay like this forever... The thought barely finished forming before a tidal wave of fatigue pulled her into a deep, dreamless sleep.
"Asleep already?" Hiruko observed her breathing as it leveled out into a steady rhythm. He approached quietly for a closer inspection.
Looking at her, who would have thought this girl was one of the root causes of the eventual Fourth Ninja War? Aside from her clean, youthful features and lively personality, she was entirely ordinary—no bloodline, no special lineage. Just a normal girl.
Hiruko slowly reached out. Beside the Cursed Seal of Heaven on the back of her neck, he applied an additional, complex sealing formula. Once the reinforcement was complete, he left a little "something" near Rin's heart as well.
It was a long time before Rin finally stirred awake. She found a warm blanket draped over her, while Hiruko sat in a chair nearby, seemingly preoccupied.
"I'm so sorry, Lord Hiruko!" Rin scrambled to sit up, her face flushing with embarrassment. "I fell asleep right in front of you. That was incredibly rude."
Hiruko shook his head dismissively. "It's fine. Now that you're awake, focus on recovering. We'll attempt the second fusion in three days. Starting tomorrow, I'll begin your specialized Taijutsu training."
With that, Hiruko's shadow clone dissipated into a cloud of white smoke.
Rin stared at the spot where he had been. Lord Hiruko really knows how to take care of people, she thought. He hadn't just covered her with a blanket; he had left a clone behind just to monitor her condition.
If only Kakashi... Her thoughts drifted to the silver-haired boy, and her heart sank. Because of Obito's "death," a wall had been built between them that she couldn't climb. Back when they were surrounded by enemies, she realized Kakashi didn't harbor those kinds of romantic feelings for her. In the moment of greatest danger, he had even acted as a messenger for Obito's last confession.
She let out a heavy sigh, clutching the blanket tightly as she lost herself in thought.
Time moved like a white stallion passing a crack in a wall; peaceful days always seemed to fly by.
During the daylight hours, Hiruko worked systematically in the Research Division. Lately, he had been obsessing over the mutational properties of plants and jellyfish, hoping for a breakthrough—particularly in botany.
He had successfully engineered a combat plant similar to the First Hokage's Wood Style. This organism could continuously drain chakra and was perfectly suited for the battlefield. In theory, Hiruko could toss a few dozen of these "saplings" into an enemy army, and within ten minutes, they would swell into a forest comparable to the Deep Forest Emergence, ravenously consuming the opponents' energy.
However, these results didn't offer much direct benefit to Hiruko's own power. They had one fatal flaw: the plant's core was too fragile.
By contrast, he was highly envious of the Turritopsis dohrnii—the immortal jellyfish. Its ability to undergo transdifferentiation and essentially "reset" its life cycle was a biological masterpiece. But both organisms had limitations. Plants were terrified of fire, and jellyfish were confined to water with bodies so delicate they could be crushed into a pulp by a stray footstep.
Still, months of research had yielded some solutions. Hashirama's cells were incredibly invasive; once injected, organisms underwent bizarre transformations.
Hiruko's massive incubation vats were now filled with grotesque specimens: three-headed sparrows, rats with six pulsing hearts, and insects that looked like they crawled out of a dark fantasy novel. Some mutations appeared relatively normal, but Hiruko kept them all for study.
"Chakra is just too convenient for this world," Hiruko mused.
It was no wonder Orochimaru could perform the work of a thousand mad scientists alone. This mystical energy replaced the need for high-precision sensors or delicate surgical machinery. Chakra was the ultimate tool; with it, anything was possible.
Sometimes, Hiruko couldn't help but feel a twinge of contempt for the Uchiha and Hyuga clans. They possessed god-tier ocular powers like the Byakugan and Sharingan, yet so few of them ever pushed those gifts to their logical conclusion. If a few more people like Orochimaru had those eyes, starting a "Resident Evil" style biological apocalypse would be child's play.
Why bother with petty clan politics or the extreme measures of a massacre? You could simply breed ten thousand "Umbrella Corp" bio-weapons and steamroll the entire shinobi world.
In a short span of time, Hiruko had cultivated a menagerie of "Xenomorphs." Some possessed formidable combat stats but lacked individual consciousness—perfect tools for war. However, Hiruko didn't need that kind of raw power yet, so he didn't follow the conventional training path.
For the past few months, he had focused on two things: mass-cultivating samples and then systematically breaking specific genetic codes. He used high-density chakra and Nature Energy to force biological shifts.
It was a "fringe science" approach that would make a modern lab researcher cry. In his previous life, mapping a species' genome took years of collective effort. Doing it alone was unrealistic, so he took a shortcut: he broke a segment of the genetic code and observed what trait the organism lost. Once he found a specific point of interest, he reversed the damage, extracted the corresponding protein enzyme, and injected it into other subjects to see if the trait would transfer.
This led to horrors like the "Bird-Headed Leopard"—a beast with hundreds of avian heads sprouting from its torso. Even Hiruko found it nauseating and moved it to the lowest level of cold storage.
Currently, his most successful creation was the initial "Life Serum" extracted from Hashirama's cells. It was a potent concentrated vitality shot that could effectively halt the process of death. As long as the subject wasn't killed instantly, Hiruko's serum could...
