Chapter 27 - The Weight Of the Name

CHAPTER 27: The Weight of the Name

The arena floor was a mosaic of destruction.

Scorch marks, jagged craters, and the metallic scent of blood hung in the morning air. Lucius stood at the edge of the darkened tunnel, his crimson eyes fixed on his companions. Jax was testing the balance of his spear, his jaw set. Hans was pale, his fingers white-knuckled around his focus stone.

"It is your turn," Lucius said. His voice was a calm anchor in the storm of the crowd's roar. "The nobles expect you to fail. They see you as shadows of a fallen house. Show them that even a shadow can cut."

Jax looked up, a fierce, jagged grin spreading across his face. "I didn't bleed for two days in that courtyard to be a footnote. I'm going to show them what commoner bronze can do."

Hans took a ragged breath. "I'll hold the shield. I won't let them break."

---

Match 29: Jax and Hans vs. The Alaric Twins.

The twins were mid-tier nobles. Their Talents were synchronized: **Zephyr Needle** and **Gale Compression**. They didn't look at Jax or Hans. They looked through them. To them, this was just a cleaning chore.

Begin.

The twins moved.

"Talent Activation: Zephyr Needle!"

Wind hissed. Thousands of invisible, system-guided points tore through the air.

"Now, Hans!" Jax roared.

Hans slammed his palms together. He didn't just cast magic. He used the Old System of mana circulation Lucius taught him. He structured it.

"Talent Activation: Mana Bulwark!"

A blue screen snapped into existence.

Impact. Impact. Impact.

The needles slammed into the shield like iron rain. Hans groaned. His feet slid back. His mana core burned. The System warned of depletion.

"Five seconds!" Hans screamed. Blood leaked from his nose.

Jax lunged. He stayed low. A blur of movement behind the shield.

He closed the distance. One twin sneered. A hand raised.

"Talent Activation: Tornado Burst!"

Jax didn't dodge. He twisted mid-air. He used the wind's pressure. He spun.

Reckless. Desperate.

"Commoner's Pride!"

The spear whistled. A bronze flash.

It bypassed the cyclone's eye. It drove into the twin's shoulder.

A cry of pain. The Talent sputtered.

The second twin reacted.

"Talent Activation: Wind Blade!"

The compressed air sliced Jax's thigh. Deep.

Jax hit the stone. He rolled. He forced himself up on a buckling leg.

"Hans! Again!"

Hans was on one knee. His mana was a flickering candle.

He saw Jax bleeding. He saw the lethal strike forming.

"Ten… seconds…" Hans gasped.

He forced the last of his core into a single point.

The shield hardened. It became crystalline. The wind blade shattered.

Jax used the opening. He ignored the fire in his leg.

He lunged. One last thrust.

He pinned the twin's robes to the floor. A brutal physical strike to the jaw followed.

The twins collapsed.

Silence in the noble section.

Jax leaned on his spear. Blood pooled on the granite. Hans fell onto his back, gasping for air. Empty.

They had won. But they had touched the edge of the grave.

Match 30: Julian Garcia vs. Arianna Brett.

The stadium shook as Arianna Brett entered. Beside her paced a B- Rank Silver-Maned Frost Wolf, a beast whose mana signature was almost as high as her own. As a Beast Tamer, her Talent wasn't just command—it was Synchronization.

Begin.

Arianna didn't hang back.

"Talent Activation: Feral Link!"

Her eyes turned silver, matching the wolf's. They moved as one shadow. Arianna lunged with her rapier while the beast flanked from the blind spot.

"You think I rely only on my beast?", I didn't use my rapier because I didn't know that imbecile will over take me.. Julian Garcia didn't say anything.

Julian Garcia didn't draw a sword. He didn't move his feet.

Thunder rolled.

The wolf leapt, its claws coated in frost. Arianna struck low. A perfect pincer.

"Talent Activation: Heavenly Decree!"

Gold lightning exploded. It parried the rapier and blasted the wolf back in a single discharge.

Arianna pushed. She felt the beast's pain through the link. Her mana flared.

"Echo Howl!"

The wolf let out a shockwave of sound that shattered the stone floor. Arianna followed in the wake, her rapier a silver blur. She was performing better than anyone expected. Her blade came inches from Julian's throat.

"Impressive," Julian said. His voice was calm. "But a beast is still just a beast."

Julian's mana erupted.

A golden storm engulfed the platform.

Arianna screamed as the pressure pinned her. The wolf whimpered, its legs buckling under the divine weight of the Prince's mana. Arianna parried three more strikes, fighting through the feedback of her familiar's agony. Resilience.

A single palm strike from Julian sent her flying.

She lost.

She and her wolf left the arena wounded—but unbroken.

Match 31: Lucius van Venus vs. Kaelera.

The crowd's murmurs were hornets. Kaelera. Rank 2. The Juggernaut.

She stepped out. Her armor clanked. Her axe, Mountain Breaker, hummed with volcanic heat.

"I saw what you did to Elias," Kaelera said. Her voice was cold wind. "You make things equal and I don't know how you did it . But my strength isn't just mana. It's bone. It's iron."

Lucius drew his blade. Fatigue pulled at his muscles. His shoulder was stiff.

"The mountain only feels heavy because you believe it has the right to be," Lucius replied.

Begin.

Kaelera slammed her axe.

"Talent Activation: Earth-Render!"

The stone tore open. A fissure raced toward Lucius.

He used "Void Displacement."

He appeared behind her. Kaelera was already spinning. She had anticipated it.

The axe haft caught Lucius in the ribs.

CRACK.

Lucius was thrown. Two ribs snapped. He hit the ground. He rolled.

He coughed up a spray of crimson. His 15 Endurance was failing him.

Kaelera leapt. The axe glowed molten.

"Talent Activation: Crushing Descent!"

Lucius's eyes narrowed. Cold. Clinical.

"Authority: Exodus."

The void snapped open.

"Chapter 1: All Things Being Equal."

The molten glow died. The Talent-enhanced weight was tethered to Lucius's vessel.

But Kaelera was smart. She used her momentum. Raw mass.

A hundred pounds of iron was still lethal.

Lucius raised his blade.

"Verse 1: Sword Swirls."

The vacuum spun. Blade met axe.

Screaming metal. Lucius's arms trembled. Muscles tore.

He wasn't fighting her Talent. He was fighting her stubborn will.

Kaelera pushed down. Face to face.

A struggle for breath?

"This is wrong… why do I feel… weak?"

Lucius didn't answer. He couldn't. 28 Mana. Maintaining the parity.

He twisted his blade. He redirected the edge into the stone.

The ground shattered. Lucius stepped into her guard.

A jagged, pained blur.

Three strikes. Throat. Solar plexus. knee.

Kaelera grunted. Armor buckled. She didn't fall.

She grabbed Lucius by the collar. She threw him.

He hit the stone again. The world spun.

He was at his limit. Mana dipping. Body failing.

But Kaelera's hands were shaking.

The "Equality" was breaking her. She had never been weak. To her, being equal felt like being a cripple.

To Lucius, being equal was his home.

Lucius stood. Slow. Agonizing.

"One more," he whispered.

Kaelera roared. She charged. A wide, desperate arc.

Lucius didn't dodge.

He stepped forward. Into the path of the axe.

Void Displacement.

Three inches closer. Inside the swing.

He drove his blade through the gap in her armor.

The steel pierced deep.

Kaelera froze. The axe slipped. It hit the floor with a heavy boom.

"You… really are… a demon…" she whispered.

Her eyes rolled back.

Lucius caught her. He lowered her gently.

He stood there. Covered in blood. Covered in dust.

His breathing was a ragged whistle.

Winner: Lucius van Venus.

The screen flickered.

Rank 2.

Lucius looked at the VIP balcony. He didn't see the crowd.

He saw Julian Garcia. Standing in the tunnel. Lightning in his eyes.

The Finals.

The Prince and the Demon.

Lucius sheathed his sword. Click.

The sentence had been written in blood.

Only one name remained to end it.

To Be Continued.
