Chapter 22 - Chapter Thirteen: Crimson and Ice, Part 3

The arena had become a graveyard of shattered ice.

Crystalline fragments littered the ruined floor, catching the light in pale blue flashes. Frost clung to the edges of the protective barriers, and thin cracks spread through the stone beneath Lucien's boots.

He stood at the center of the destruction, his twin swords lowered at his sides.

The weathered bronze blade rested in his right hand. The dark silver sword, its golden markings flickering faintly, remained in his left. Crimson light pulsed beneath his skin, illuminating the veins along his wrists.

His breathing was uneven.

Every movement demanded more effort than it should have. His muscles trembled from accumulated strain, and the cold had begun to seep beyond his defenses.

Across from him, Esdeath smiled.

Not with the distant amusement of a noblewoman observing a political obligation.

Not with the satisfaction of someone who had simply proven herself stronger.

This was the smile of a warrior who had finally encountered a challenge worth pursuing.

"Better," she said, turning her rapier between her fingers. "Much better."

Lucien said nothing.

His attention had shifted.

Something stirred beneath the arena.

At first, he mistook it for the lingering resonance of his own magic. The shadows around his boots deepened unnaturally, their edges sliding across the fractured stone even under the full light above.

Then the ground trembled.

A deep, resonant growl rolled through the arena.

The remaining ice cracked.

Lucien's fingers tightened around his swords.

The shadows behind him rose.

They did not disperse like smoke or gather like ordinary magical energy. They moved with deliberate purpose, flowing together into a towering silhouette. A long muzzle emerged first, followed by a massive head, broad shoulders, and limbs that seemed carved from the darkness between worlds.

Two crimson eyes opened.

The Shadow Wolf King had arrived.

Its enormous body towered over Lucien, its outline constantly shifting between solid darkness and something less comprehensible. Ribbons of shadow coiled around its legs, while the air surrounding its claws warped with a faint, unsettling distortion.

The pressure descended upon the arena.

Several remaining ice pillars collapsed.

Even the protective barriers hummed in protest.

From the observation platform, Kuroka's ears lifted.

"Nyah. So it finally decided to show its face."

Erza's expression sharpened. "That is the source of his shadow fluctuations?"

"Not quite," Grayroad murmured, her gaze fixed upon the enormous beast. "The distinction matters."

Grayfia's eyes narrowed.

She had felt the same power before, buried beneath Lucien's unstable Destruction and the unusual structure of his magic. But this was no ordinary increase in magical output.

Something ancient had answered him.

And it was looking directly at its master.

Lucien felt the presence before he understood it.

The wolf's consciousness brushed against his own, vast and distant. It was not a voice in the conventional sense. Its intentions arrived as impressions: hunger, pride, territorial instinct, and an overwhelming certainty that the world should yield before it.

The Shadow Wolf King recognized Lucien.

But recognition was not obedience.

Its crimson eyes narrowed as it studied him.

A single thought pressed against his mind.

Sovereign?

The word carried no reverence.

It was a challenge.

Lucien's pulse quickened.

He finally understood why his shadows had always felt different, moving with an intent unlike his other abilities, as though they possessed a will of their own. Destruction answered his intent. Ice followed its principles. Magic circles translated thought into structure.

This power did none of those things.

It listened.

It reacted.

And beneath those reactions lay a will that had never truly been his.

The beast lowered its enormous head until its crimson eyes were level with Lucien's.

Prove your claim.

Lucien felt the temptation to force it into submission.

His power surged instinctively, crimson energy spreading through the shadows. He could attempt to crush its resistance, impose his will, and establish dominance through sheer force.

It would be the simplest answer.

Perhaps even the most natural one.

But the beast before him was not a spell waiting to be mastered. It was the living expression of an ancient authority, a consciousness his power matrix had allowed him to perceive and interact with.

The matrix had not created the wolf.

It had given their connection a language.

Lucien exhaled slowly.

"No."

The wolf's ears angled backward.

Lucien raised his chin.

"You answer to me."

The beast's growl shook the arena.

Lucien did not retreat.

"But not because I can force you to kneel." His grip tightened around the twin swords. "You stand with me because I choose you. And if you choose to stand with me, then we fight together."

For one long moment, neither moved.

Then the wolf's eyes brightened.

Then prove it.

The pressure vanished.

Not because the beast had surrendered.

Because it had accepted the challenge.

Lucien felt something shift between them, a connection settling into place without either side yielding its nature. The shadows around his boots surged upward, winding around his legs and flowing over his arms.

His body shuddered as the additional power entered the connection.

It was too much.

His magic circuits strained beneath the sudden pressure, and pain flared through his shoulders. The wolf's presence pressed against his senses, threatening to drown out everything else.

Lucien clenched his teeth.

Control. Not suppression.

He focused on his breathing.

One breath.

One heartbeat.

Then another.

The shadows steadied.

The wolf moved beside him, its immense head lowering until its muzzle aligned with his shoulder.

Lucien looked toward Esdeath.

"Now," he said, "we can continue."

Esdeath's smile widened.

"Excellent."

She vanished in a burst of frost.

Lucien moved at the same instant.

The wolf lunged.

Esdeath appeared between them, her rapier flashing toward Lucien's chest. He twisted aside, catching the blade against his silver sword while his bronze weapon swept toward her flank.

She redirected the attack with a sharp, precise turn of her wrist, sending its force off‑line.

Steel rang against steel.

Then the wolf struck.

A massive claw plunged from above, shredding the air with a distortion so sharp it made the surrounding space ripple.

Esdeath leaped backward.

The claw struck the arena.

Stone exploded beneath its impact.

She touched down on a narrow platform formed from her ice. Her boots slammed into the surface for a heartbeat before she drove herself forward again. Her rapier traced a glittering arc toward Lucien's throat.

He ducked.

The blade passed over his head.

His bronze sword swept upward, forcing her to redirect her momentum. At the same time, the wolf snapped at her retreating path, its jaws closing on empty air as she twisted sideways.

For the first time in the duel, Esdeath was forced to contend with two opponents striking as a single, unified force.

Lucien understood the difference immediately.

The wolf could reach angles his swords could not. Its claws controlled space around his blind spots, while his weapons guided its movements into openings that would otherwise remain inaccessible.

But the coordination was imperfect.

The wolf moved according to instincts older than Lucien's understanding. It favored overwhelming attacks where he preferred calculated pressure.

Twice, its movements nearly disrupted his timing.

Twice, Lucien adjusted.

The third time, he deliberately changed his approach.

Instead of trying to direct the beast, he left an opening in his own defense.

The wolf recognized it.

Its body twisted, shadow gathering around its claws as it struck through the gap Lucien had created.

Esdeath's eyes widened a fraction.

She blocked the attack with her rapier, but the impact drove her across the arena. Ice formed beneath her boots, breaking apart as she struggled to arrest her momentum.

Lucien pursued.

His twin swords crossed in a precise X.

"Power of Destruction."

Crimson energy flared along both blades.

Esdeath raised her free hand.

Ice erupted from the ground.

The first wave struck Lucien's swords and disintegrated beneath the destructive aura. The second curved around his flank, forcing him to pivot. Esdeath gave him no time to recover. Her rapier darted forward in a precise thrust, catching him before he could reset his stance.

Lucien barely caught the first strike on his bronze blade. The second rang against his silver sword, and the third slipped past his guard, scoring a shallow cut across his sleeve.

Esdeath followed without hesitation.

"Your coordination is improving," she observed. "But you are still thinking of the wolf as an extension of yourself."

Lucien parried a thrust aimed at his shoulder.

"And you're trying to make me think about it instead of you."

Her grin sharpened.

"Perhaps."

She stamped her foot against the arena, the impact cracking through the stone beneath her.

The temperature plunged.

Ice raced across the floor in branching patterns, spreading outward in an expanding web. Pillars rose from the frozen surface, creating a maze of jagged walls and narrow passages.

Lucien's eyes narrowed.

Esdeath disappeared behind the rising ice.

The wolf's head turned.

A flicker of movement.

"Right!"

Lucien pivoted as Esdeath burst through the nearest pillar, rapier aimed at his ribs. He caught her blade with his silver sword, but the impact numbed his fingers.

A second attack came from above.

He barely raised his bronze blade in time.

The force drove him to one knee.

Ice spread across his sword, crawling toward his hand. His fingers began to lose their feeling.

Then the wolf struck the pillar behind Esdeath.

Its claws tore through the ice, shattering the structure and forcing her to abandon her attack.

Lucien rolled clear.

He landed hard, one hand striking the frozen floor.

The cold had reached his forearm.

Thin, pale markings spread beneath his skin where the frost had overwhelmed his defenses.

He pushed himself upright.

Too slow.

The wolf paced beside him, its growl vibrating through the shadows.

It wanted to charge.

Lucien could feel the instinct pressing against their connection.

Not yet.

He redirected the beast's momentum, not with force, but with intent. The wolf circled instead of lunging, forcing Esdeath to divide her attention between them.

That moment was enough.

Lucien stepped forward and drove his silver sword into the ice beneath her feet.

"Destruction."

Crimson energy spread through the frozen surface.

The ice disintegrated in a widening ring.

Esdeath leaped clear, but the wolf was already waiting.

Its claws swept toward her landing point, carving a brutal arc through the air.

She crossed her rapier before her body and summoned a shield of compressed ice. The impact shattered the shield and sent her sliding across the arena.

Her expression had changed.

The amusement remained, but it had sharpened into concentration.

"Now that," she said, rising from her crouch, "is an improvement."

She lifted her rapier.

"Weissschnabel."

The air filled with white streaks.

Blades of ice spiraled into existence around her, each one slim enough to pierce armor and dense enough to shrug off ordinary magical attacks. They launched in rapid succession, converging upon Lucien and the wolf from multiple directions.

Lucien raised both swords.

The wolf roared.

Shadows surged outward, intercepting the first wave. Several ice blades vanished into the darkness, their magical structure consumed. Others pierced through, forcing Lucien to twist and deflect them with his swords.

One cut across his cheek.

Another struck his shoulder and burst into frost.

The wolf absorbed the remaining projectiles against a shifting barrier of shadow, but each impact sent ripples through its body.

Lucien felt every disturbance.

The connection was becoming a conduit for more than intent. The wolf's strain pressed into his nerves, while his own exhaustion bled into the beast's movements.

He was not merely commanding a creature.

He was sharing the consequences of its actions.

So that is the cost.

Esdeath had noticed it too.

"You feel everything it feels," she said, her steps growing louder as she pushed forward through the fading storm of ice. "Every impact. Every movement. Every failure."

Lucien wiped the blood from his cheek with the back of his hand.

"An astute observation."

"And if it loses control?"

"Then I bring it back."

The wolf snarled.

Lucien felt its indignation.

For the first time, he almost smiled.

"Both of us," he corrected.

Esdeath laughed.

Then the arena froze.

A vast ring of ice expanded beneath Esdeath's feet.

The temperature dropped so sharply that the remaining frost on the barriers crystallized into intricate patterns. The air itself seemed to tighten, each breath becoming an effort.

Lucien's instincts screamed.

"Move!"

He and the wolf separated just as a pillar of ice erupted between them.

Esdeath stood atop it, her rapier pointed toward the sky.

The surrounding cold folded around her in protective layers. Dense, utterly relentless ice armor formed over her shoulders and forearms, its surface gleaming with a pale blue light.

She descended.

Her first strike met Lucien's bronze sword.

The impact sent a sharp shock through his arms, rattling bone and muscle alike.

Her second forced his silver blade aside.

The third drove him backward.

Lucien tried to turn the momentum into a counterattack, but Esdeath had already changed angles. Her rapier slipped past his guard, tapping a precise note against the shadow‑forged armor shielding his ribs.

The impact cracked the protective layer.

She followed with a thrust toward his shoulder.

Lucien twisted, but the tip caught him.

Pain flashed through his arm.

He staggered.

The wolf lunged to intercept.

Esdeath pivoted, driving a concentrated burst of cold into the space before it. The shock wave struck the wolf's chest, freezing the outer layers of its shadow before detonating into a storm of ice.

The beast recoiled.

Lucien felt the backlash tear through their connection.

For one disorienting instant, his vision darkened.

The wolf's anger surged into him, wild and absolute.

It wanted to answer the attack with everything it possessed.

Lucien felt the temptation too.

Release the restraint.

Let the ancient power flood through him.

Let the beast decide what deserved to survive.

The shadows thickened around his feet.

The arena dimmed.

Esdeath lowered her rapier.

"There it is," she said quietly.

Lucien's head lifted.

"What?"

"The moment when power becomes an excuse." Her gaze remained fixed on him. "You are tired. You are hurt. Your control is slipping. You could surrender the decision to the creature and call it instinct."

The wolf growled.

Lucien felt its fury.

He also felt its attention.

It was waiting to see what he would do.

Esdeath raised her weapon again.

"Will you command it, Lucien? Or will you hide behind it?"

For a moment, the only sound was the low hum of magic within the arena.

Lucien looked at the wolf.

Its crimson eyes burned with ancient impatience.

He could not dominate it without risking the connection. He could not simply trust it to understand every intention. They were different beings, carrying different instincts and different ideas of strength.

That was the problem.

And the answer.

Lucien loosened the pressure he'd been forcing through their bond, letting the strain unwind.

Not enough to lose control.

Enough to listen.

Together.

The wolf's rage did not vanish.

It changed direction.

The shadows around Lucien's body settled into a tighter formation, reinforcing his damaged defenses instead of consuming the space around him. The wolf lowered its head, its gaze locked on Esdeath.

Lucien raised both swords.

"I don't need you to become me," he said. "And I won't become you."

The beast's claws dug into the arena.

Then stand beside me.

Lucien stepped forward.

"I am."

They attacked together.

The wolf charged from the left, forcing Esdeath to brace against its immense reach. Lucien moved along the opposite flank, his twin swords tracing alternating arcs of crimson light.

Esdeath blocked his first strike.

The second slipped past her rapier and struck the ice armor over her shoulder.

Crimson energy flared.

The armor cracked.

She countered immediately, but the wolf's claw descended between them, forcing her to withdraw before the blow could land.

Lucien followed the opening.

His bronze sword struck her guard.

His silver sword swept toward her side.

Esdeath blocked the second blade with an ice barrier, but the Power of Destruction punched through its structure, eroding it from the inside out.

For the first time, her defense didn't hold.

The barrier shattered.

Esdeath sprang backward, boots skidding across the frozen stone.

A long crack ran through the ice armor on her shoulder.

She glanced at it.

Then she laughed.

"Wonderful."

The word carried no mockery.

Only recognition.

"You are finally beginning to understand what you possess."

Lucien's chest rose and fell.

"I'm beginning to understand what I don't."

Esdeath's eyes gleamed.

"Then let us discover how far that understanding can take you."

She raised her rapier.

The ice around her began to move.

Lucien felt the wolf tense beside him.

His own magical reserves were nearly exhausted. The frost had numbed his fingers, and every breath scraped against his lungs. His connection to the wolf had stabilized, but maintaining it demanded concentration he could scarcely afford.

One more exchange.

That was all he could guarantee.

Esdeath seemed to reach the same conclusion.

"Show me your strongest attack," she commanded. "Not the safest. Not the one you can use repeatedly. The one you would choose when there is no room left to retreat."

Lucien studied her.

"You intend to answer it with your own."

"Of course."

"That could destroy what remains of the arena."

"Then we had better make it worth remembering."

Lucien glanced at the wolf.

Its crimson eyes met his.

No command passed between them.

No forced submission.

Only understanding.

Lucien turned back to Esdeath.

"Very well."

He brought his twin swords together.

Crimson energy poured from the bronze blade. Darker power gathered around the silver sword, threading through its golden markings until the two currents began to spiral around each other.

Destruction and shadow.

Two powers that had resisted harmony now moved in a narrow, unstable orbit.

The air trembled.

Fragments of ice lifted from the ground and disintegrated before reaching the growing sphere between his blades. Magical residue vanished into the crimson-black glow, leaving only faint ripples where it had existed.

A low, haunting note resonated through the arena.

The remaining ice shivered.

Lucien felt the wolf's presence press against his own, steadying him and driving fresh strength into his strike. Its shadow wrapped around the sphere, extending the reach of his Power of Destruction and bracing its unstable boundary.

The strain was immense.

His arms trembled.

The markings beneath his skin burned brighter, and the shadows at his feet lashed violently across the floor.

He forced his breathing into a steady rhythm.

The sphere compressed.

Smaller.

Denser.

More dangerous.

"Crimson Requiem."

He thrust both swords forward.

The sphere surged across the arena, dragging a spiraling wake of darkness behind it. Stone vanished along its path. Ice barriers disintegrated at the edges, their magical structures erased as the attack tore through them.

Esdeath did not retreat.

She planted her feet and raised her rapier.

The air around her erupted.

"Ice Storm Commander-in-Chief!"

A colossal storm gathered around her, its spiraling currents filled with razor-sharp ice and freezing magical energy. The storm expanded in a vast dome, drawing power from the frost scattered throughout the arena.

The temperature plunged.

The two attacks collided.

For an instant, the world became crimson and white.

The impact shook the entire training grounds.

Lucien's attack devoured the outer layers of the ice storm, dissolving frozen constructs as quickly as they formed. But Esdeath's magic rebuilt them, layer upon layer, feeding the storm with the cold still saturating the arena.

The wolf's shadow surged through the collision, reinforcing Crimson Requiem.

Esdeath answered by compressing the heart of her storm, concentrating its force against the advancing sphere.

Neither side yielded.

The air screamed.

Cracks spread through the arena floor, racing toward the outer walls. The protective barriers blazed as their enchantments struggled to contain the pressure.

On the observation platform, Grayfia raised both hands.

Multiple magic circles unfolded around the arena, reinforcing the barriers from the outside.

Venelana joined her, crimson magic pouring into the failing structure.

Grayroad's expression had lost its usual detachment.

"That connection…" she whispered. "He is not merely borrowing the beast's strength. He is establishing a shared foundation."

Kuroka's ears flattened.

"Lucien, don't you dare push it too far…"

The collision intensified.

Crimson light cut through the white storm. Ice swallowed the light, only for the sphere to consume it again. Each attack dismantled the other's structure, and each rebuilt itself from the power still available to its wielder.

Lucien felt his reserves collapsing.

His vision blurred.

The wolf's presence flickered at the edges of his awareness.

He could not maintain the attack much longer.

Across the arena, Esdeath's ice armor fractured. Fine cracks spread across its surface, and the storm around her began to lose its perfect rotation.

She was reaching her limit too.

Their eyes met through the collision.

Neither looked away.

Then the final exchange arrived.

Lucien poured the last of his remaining mana into Crimson Requiem.

Esdeath compressed the storm around her rapier until its center shone with an almost colorless light.

The two forces struck.

The arena disappeared behind a blinding flash.

For one breathless instant, sound ceased.

Then the barriers buckled.

Grayfia's magic circles flared. Venelana's power surged, rushing in to reinforce them. Grayroad poured her own shadow magic into the failing structure.

The shock wave reverberated across the arena.

Ice pillars shattered.

Stone fractured.

The remaining magical formations collapsed into drifting motes.

As abruptly as it had begun, the storm cut off.

Silence settled over the ruined arena.

A cloud of frost and dust drifted through the air.

The last fragments of ice fell from above, striking the broken stone with delicate clicks.

At the center of the destruction, Lucien stood with his swords lowered.

The Shadow Wolf King loomed behind him, its outline flickering like a flame struggling against the wind.

Across from them, Esdeath remained upright.

She still held her rapier.

Her ice armor had been almost completely destroyed, leaving only fragments around her forearms and shoulders. Her breathing was heavy, and a thin line of blood marked one sleeve.

Lucien tried to take a step.

His knee nearly gave way.

The wolf moved closer, its shadow curling around his legs to steady him.

Esdeath noticed.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then she lowered her rapier.

"You're stronger than the reports claimed," she said. "And more dangerous than you realize."

Lucien managed a tired smile.

"So are you."

Her eyes narrowed with satisfaction.

The final collision had settled nothing. Crimson Requiem had overwhelmed the outer layers of her storm, while her concentrated ice had prevented the destructive sphere from reaching her directly. Both attacks had consumed the energy their wielders could safely provide.

Neither had overcome the other.

Both had reached their limits.

Esdeath glanced toward the wolf.

"And that creature is not simply a weapon."

"No," Lucien replied.

The wolf's crimson eyes remained fixed on her, but its posture had changed. The aggression had receded, replaced by watchful stillness.

Lucien could still feel it through their connection.

Its pride.

Its exhaustion.

Its fierce reluctance to admit that either had reached a limit.

He understood the feeling.

Esdeath returned her attention to him.

"You could become my equal."

The words were delivered as a straightforward assessment, without softness or ceremony.

"Perhaps even surpass me," she continued. "If you learn to control that power without losing the judgment that makes it useful."

Lucien's expression grew serious.

"And if I fail?"

"Then you will become a cautionary tale." She sheathed her rapier. "I have no intention of allowing that to happen before I have seen what you can become."

He gave a faint, exhausted laugh.

"That sounds almost encouraging."

"Do not mistake my expectations for kindness."

"I wouldn't dare."

Esdeath turned toward the viewing platform, then paused.

"You are stronger than I thought, Lucien. But can you keep up?"

He raised an eyebrow.

"Is that a challenge?"

"It is a warning."

She looked back at the ruined arena.

"Do not assume this duel has settled anything. You have demonstrated potential. Potential is merely a promise that has not yet been fulfilled."

Lucien nodded.

For once, he had no clever answer.

Because she was right.

The Shadow Wolf King had answered his call, but their connection was still new. Crimson Requiem had shown what their combined power could accomplish, but the cost had nearly emptied him.

He had won nothing that could not be lost through carelessness.

And he had discovered something far more troubling than a new source of strength.

His shadows possessed a will.

He could not afford to ignore it.

The wolf lowered its head beside him.

Lucien felt its presence recede, not disappearing, but withdrawing into the depths of his authority. The connection remained, quiet and watchful.

For the first time since the power had awakened, he let it move without trying to contain it.

He let it settle naturally.

The shadows around his boots softened.

Then his legs finally gave out.

"Lucien!" Kuroka shouted from the platform.

He barely heard her.

The arena tilted sideways.

Before he struck the ground, the wolf's shadow swept beneath him, cushioning his fall. Its enormous form began to dissolve, flowing into the darkness around his body until only two crimson eyes remained.

They watched Esdeath for one final moment.

Then they vanished.

Lucien's last conscious thought was that he would need to rethink his training schedule.

The next was that Grayfia would almost certainly disagree with every part of it.

Then darkness claimed him.

The observation platform erupted into motion.

Grayfia reached Lucien first, descending through a magic circle before he had fully settled against the broken stone. She knelt beside him, one hand hovering over his chest as a diagnostic spell spread across his body.

"His magical reserves are critically depleted," she said. "There is significant strain on his circuits and damage from the cold. He needs immediate treatment."

Venelana arrived beside her, her expression controlled but her eyes fixed on her son.

"Will he recover?"

"Yes," Grayfia answered after a moment. "Provided he rests and does not attempt anything foolish during his recovery."

Kuroka landed beside them.

"Then someone should make sure he doesn't wake up and try to train."

Grayfia gave her a level look.

"I was already planning to."

"Nyah. Just checking."

Erza approached from the other side, her attention shifting between Lucien and the ruined arena.

"The decisive factor was not simply the increase in his power," she said. "It was the change in coordination. Once he stopped trying to force the wolf into his rhythm, they began compensating for each other's weaknesses."

She folded her arms.

"His timing still needs work. Their connection is vulnerable to emotional surges, and his body cannot currently withstand the strain for long. But the underlying principle is sound."

Albedo stood a short distance away, her gaze fixed on Lucien.

For once, she had no immediate comment.

Her hands were clenched at her sides.

She had watched him struggle, adapt, and nearly collapse beneath the power he was trying to master. Whatever her own ambitions might be, she could no longer pretend that his future would be shaped by pedigree alone.

If she intended to stand beside him in the conflicts to come, she would have to become someone capable of doing so.

Her expression hardened with renewed determination.

She would not be left behind.

Grayroad had not moved from the edge of the platform.

Her attention remained on the place where the Shadow Wolf King had vanished.

"The old authority is awakening faster than expected," she murmured.

Grayfia glanced at her.

"You recognize the manifestation?"

"I recognize what it represents." Grayroad's voice was unusually grave. "The Lucifuge bloodline has always carried traces of powers that were never meant to be ordinary magic. Most descendants inherit only fragments. Some never awaken anything at all."

Her gaze followed the fading remnants of shadow across the arena floor.

"But this…"

She paused.

"This is an Alpha."

Venelana's expression tightened.

"Explain."

"The Shadow Wolf King is not merely a shape created by Lucien's imagination. It is a manifestation of an ancient shadow authority, an inherited power with a consciousness that can express itself through him. The power matrix has given that connection structure, but the creature's nature predates the matrix."

Grayroad looked toward Lucien.

"His authority and the wolf are connected, but they are not interchangeable. He must learn to work with it without allowing its instincts to dictate his decisions."

Grayfia's eyes narrowed.

"And you believe he can manage that?"

"I believe he has begun."

Grayroad's expression softened slightly.

"That is not the same as saying he is safe."

Kuroka's ears dipped.

"How long do you think he's been doing this?"

The question drew every eye toward her.

Grayfia rose slowly.

"Kuroka."

Kuroka looked at the unconscious Lucien, then back at the women surrounding her.

"Before you start glaring, nyah, he made me promise not to tell."

Grayfia's expression did not change.

"That is not an answer."

"It's the answer you're getting until he wakes up and explains it himself."

"Kuroka."

The second warning carried considerably more weight.

Kuroka's ears flattened.

"Fine. He's been working on the matrix longer than he let on. But I didn't know the wolf would manifest like this, and I didn't know he could establish that kind of connection with it."

Grayroad studied her.

"And why were you involved?"

Kuroka hesitated.

Then she sighed.

"He promised to help me find a powerful beast for my own matrix. Something that suits me. Something I can grow alongside instead of just borrowing power from."

Venelana's expression softened, though her concern remained.

"You both intend to develop abilities that have scarcely been studied."

"Pretty much."

"And you thought keeping that secret was wise?"

Kuroka's ears lowered another fraction.

"Not my best decision, nyah."

Grayfia folded her arms.

"We will discuss this when Lucien is conscious."

Kuroka winced.

"That sounds worse than the fight."

"It should."

Erza hid the faintest smile.

Albedo, meanwhile, continued watching Lucien.

The revelation changed the shape of the problem before them. His power was not simply growing stronger. It was becoming more complex, more difficult to predict, and potentially more dangerous if left without proper guidance.

That meant the people around him would have to grow just as fast.

She glanced at Erza.

"I assume you intend to increase your training."

"Of course."

Kuroka's smile returned, small but determined.

"Then don't expect me to fall behind."

Albedo looked back toward Lucien.

"Neither should you expect me to."

No rivalry was resolved in that exchange.

No promises were made.

But the decision had settled among them all the same.

They would not allow Lucien to face what came next without becoming stronger themselves.

Across the Underworld, far from the ruined arena, a man paused in the middle of an otherwise quiet corridor.

Euclid Lucifuge's expression changed.

The magical fluctuation had been brief, but unmistakable. Destruction, shadow, and an unfamiliar signature had collided with enough force to send a ripple through the surrounding territory.

He closed his eyes and examined the lingering trace.

"An unusual awakening," he murmured.

The signature was faint now, already fading beneath the estate's protective enchantments. But Euclid had sensed enough to understand that something significant had happened.

Something connected to the Lucifuge bloodline.

His mouth curved into a thin smile.

"This will interest Lord Razevim."

He opened a teleportation circle.

Before stepping through, he glanced once toward the distant estate.

"Let us see what you are becoming, Lucien Lucifuge-Gremory."

The circle closed behind him.

The corridor returned to silence.

Lucien was carried from the arena. The worst of the magical residue had begun to dissipate.

The protective barriers remained damaged. Frost coated the fractured stone, and the lingering scent of ozone hung in the air. Dark traces marked the path where Crimson Requiem had passed, while the remnants of Esdeath's storm glittered across the ruined floor.

The duel had lasted only minutes.

Its consequences would last considerably longer.

Esdeath watched as Grayfia and Venelana escorted Lucien away for treatment.

Her expression was thoughtful.

She had entered the duel expecting to evaluate a young devil whose reputation had grown faster than his accomplishments. Instead, she had encountered someone willing to revise his strategy under pressure, acknowledge the limits of his understanding, and choose cooperation when domination would have been easier.

He had not mastered his power.

That was precisely what made the encounter interesting.

"Lady Esdeath," her maid said quietly, approaching from behind. "Shall I arrange for our departure?"

Esdeath looked at the destroyed arena.

Then she smiled.

"No. Have our belongings prepared for an extended stay."

The maid blinked.

"An extended stay, my lady?"

"Did I stutter?"

"No, my lady."

"Good."

Esdeath turned toward the estate.

"Lucien has only just begun to understand what he is capable of. It would be a waste to leave before I see what comes next."

She paused, glancing once over her shoulder at the last fading traces of shadow.

"And besides…"

Her smile sharpened into the expression of a warrior anticipating another worthy challenge.

"He had better not become boring after this."

Night settled over the Gremory estate.

Within the medical wing, Lucien rested beneath a series of healing circles, his magical reserves slowly recovering. The shadows beneath his bed remained quiet, but they were no longer entirely still.

Every so often, their edges shifted.

Not in response to a command.

Not in search of prey.

Simply because something within them was awake.

Grayfia noticed the movement during her final inspection. She said nothing, but her gaze lingered on the darkness for several seconds before she adjusted the healing formation.

The power would require observation.

Training.

And rules that Lucien could understand before he attempted to push it further.

Outside the medical wing, the estate continued to move. Erza returned to the training grounds, driven by a renewed determination to become stronger, while Kuroka began planning how to explain her own ambitions without earning another lecture. Albedo reviewed her training priorities with renewed seriousness.

Venelana remained beside her grandson a little longer than she had intended.

And Grayroad watched the shadows.

The old authority had awakened.

The Underworld had felt its arrival.

Sooner or later, others would come looking for its source.

Lucien had survived the duel, but survival was only the beginning. His strength had grown, his secrets had begun to unravel, and the path ahead had become more dangerous than ever.

The Shadow Wolf King had acknowledged him.

Esdeath had recognized his potential.

And somewhere beyond the estate, an enemy had begun to take notice.

Beneath the Gremory estate, the shadows stirred.

Far away, Euclid Lucifuge carried news of the awakening to a man who would understand its significance.

The Shadow Wolf King had found its sovereign.

And the Underworld had just been given a reason to fear what came next.

*Thank you to everyone who's stayed with us on this journey so far. We've reached a major turning point, and your input matters. The story is about to pivot as Lucien builds his own force and embraces a kingdom‑building path. Those who read the original fanfic, Heir to the Crimson Flame, might know what's coming up, but I plan to make some changes.*
