"What is going on?" Sean's voice came through sharp and immediate.
Please tell me you changed direction and those wolves in the trees are yours.
"No. Nova, what is happening? Talk to me."
I backed up slowly until my heels bumped against one of the cages behind me. The women inside had not broken out yet, staying pressed against the bars and watching. I was glad they were staying still. Fewer people moving around meant fewer targets in whatever was about to happen.
Then his face came through the dark and my chest tightened until breathing required actual effort.
Alpha Steven walked forward with his hands easy at his sides and his dark brown eyes focused and entirely without surprise. He looked at me the way a person looks at something they have been expecting to deal with for some time and are now simply getting on with.
"Well," he said, and the smirk arrived. "What a surprise."
