------

The laboratory didn't erupt into celebration after the serum stabilized.

It should have. By all logic, they had just achieved something no one since Erskine had ever managed—something even more advanced, more adaptive, more dangerous.

But instead of relief, there was silence.

Not the peaceful kind.

The kind that made every small sound feel louder than it should be.

Bucky Barnes sat upright on the reinforced platform, his breathing steady—too steady. There was no sign of exhaustion, no trembling muscles, no visible strain. It was as if his body had already adjusted… already accepted what had been forced into it.

Tony was the first to break the silence, circling him slowly like he was inspecting a machine that might suddenly explode.

"…Okay," he muttered. "I'm just gonna say it—this is already weird."

Bucky turned his head slightly, and even that small motion made Tony pause. It was smooth. Perfect. Not stiff, not loose—just… precise. Like every movement had already been calculated before it happened.

"Yeah," Tony added, pointing. "That right there? That's not normal. That's like… ballet, but if ballet could kill you."

Howard stepped forward, ignoring the joke entirely. His eyes were sharp, analytical, scanning every detail.

"How do you feel?" he asked.

Bucky didn't answer immediately.

Not because he didn't want to.

But because he was listening.

To everything.

The faint hum of the machines around them. The soft electrical current running through the walls. The distant wind brushing against the glass panels of the villa. Even the subtle shift of footsteps behind him, the rhythm of heartbeats in the room.

When he finally spoke, his voice was low.

"…Loud."

Tony frowned. "Loud?"

Bucky nodded slightly, his gaze distant for a moment. "I can hear everything."

That was when Luke moved closer, silent as ever, watching not with curiosity—but with confirmation.

Bucky flexed his fingers.

Then paused.

A faint metallic sound echoed beneath his skin.

Not outside.

Inside.

Tony's head snapped toward him. "Okay—nope. That—yeah, I heard that. That's not a good sound."

Bucky looked down at his hand, brows knitting slightly. For just a second, something flickered beneath his skin. A dark sheen. Metallic. Then it vanished like it had never been there.

Howard's expression tightened.

"It's integrating," he said under his breath.

Tony glanced at him. "Integrating what?"

Howard didn't answer immediately, his gaze fixed on Bucky's arm.

"The vibranium."

That hung in the air for a moment.

Then Tony let out a short laugh. "Yeah, okay—sure. That makes total sense. Metal arm doesn't just get replaced, it gets absorbed. Why not?"

Luke's voice came calm and steady.

"It's not just absorption. It's adaptation."

They turned to him.

Luke stepped closer, eyes focused on Bucky like he was reading something written beneath the surface.

"His body is learning from the vibranium," he continued. "Replicating its properties. Integrating it into his biological structure."

Tony blinked. "That's… not terrifying at all."

Bucky slowly pushed himself to his feet. The motion was effortless, like gravity didn't quite apply to him the same way anymore. When his foot touched the platform, the reinforced metal beneath creaked—not from weight, but from pressure.

Howard noticed instantly.

"You're adjusting force subconsciously," he said. "Your body is compensating before impact."

Bucky looked at him, confusion flickering in his expression. "I don't know how I'm doing it."

"You don't need to," Luke replied.

And that, more than anything, unsettled them.

They moved to testing quickly—not out of excitement, but necessity. Standing still felt like a risk.

Tony activated a reinforced panel along the far wall, stepping back with a grin that didn't quite hide his tension.

"Alright," he said. "Let's see what you can do."

Maria crossed her arms. "Careful."

"I'm always careful," Tony replied automatically.

No one believed him.

Bucky stepped forward, raising his hand slowly this time.

"Controlled," Howard reminded.

Bucky nodded.

Then he punched.

The impact cracked through the lab like a gunshot. The reinforced wall dented inward, the metal warping under the force.

Tony's eyes widened. "Okay—strength confirmed—"

Then he stopped.

Bucky's hand hadn't broken.

Not even bruised.

Instead, for a split second, his skin had changed. Not visibly at first—but enough. A metallic shimmer beneath the surface, like something harder had taken its place just before impact.

"Do that again," Tony said immediately, pointing.

"That's not stable," Howard cut in.

Bucky looked at his hand. "I didn't control it."

"It reacted," Luke said. "Instinctively."

They tried again.

Slower.

This time, they all saw it clearly.

As Bucky's fist moved, the skin along his knuckles darkened. Not fully metallic—but close enough. The moment it struck the wall, the material beneath cracked deeper than before. Then, just as quickly, his hand returned to normal.

Tony let out a breath. "Okay… yeah, that's insane. I love it."

Howard didn't share the enthusiasm.

Because the change wasn't consistent.

And inconsistency meant danger.

Bucky stepped back.

Then suddenly—

He staggered.

It was subtle. Almost unnoticeable.

But Luke saw it.

"Stop," he said immediately.

Too late.

The metallic sheen returned—but this time, it didn't fade.

It spread.

From Bucky's hand, up his arm, crawling beneath his skin like something alive. His breathing hitched, turning uneven, strained.

Tony took a step back. "Okay—yeah, I don't love it anymore."

Bucky clenched his jaw, muscles tightening. "I can't—"

The metal spread further, locking his arm in place, rigid and unyielding.

Howard moved forward, but Luke was already there.

He stepped directly in front of Bucky, calm, steady.

"Look at me," Luke said.

Bucky's eyes snapped to his, wild, struggling.

Luke placed a hand on his shoulder.

"Focus." his voice wasn't loud.

It didn't need to be.

Something shifted.

Bucky's breathing stuttered, then slowed. The metallic spread halted… then began to recede, inch by inch, returning to flesh.

The tension broke.

Bucky dropped to one knee, gasping.

Silence followed.

Tony exhaled slowly. "…Yeah. That's definitely not normal."

Howard stared at Luke. "You command his ability?."

Luke shook his head. "I stabilized him."

Which meant—

It could happen again.

"he is now considered a mutant, and it's his first time using his abelites, that's why he is unstable." said Luke

Later, the villa had quieted down.

Maria found Bucky sitting alone, staring out into the night.

He didn't turn when she approached.

"You scared them," she said gently.

Bucky let out a slow breath. "I scared myself."

She stood beside him, letting the silence settle before asking the question that had been waiting.

"Was it worth it?"

He didn't answer right away.

Then, quietly—

"For the first time… I feel like I'm not being controlled."

Maria's expression softened. She rested a hand on his shoulder.

"You're not alone anymore."

This time, he believed it.

Somewhere far from the villa, in a room buried beneath layers of secrecy, Hydra was already responding.

Alexander Pierce stood at the center, listening as reports came in.

"they choose to defect. now they will know consequence"

"Retrieve them."

He turned slightly as a screen flickered to life.

A figure stood there, barely visible in the dark.

Still.

Watching.

"And this time," Pierce added, voice colder, "we send something better."

Back at the villa, Howard stood alone in the lab, staring at the data like it might rearrange itself into something less dangerous.

Tony leaned against the doorway. "You're thinking too loud again."

Howard didn't look away. "We're running out of time."

"Then we move faster," Tony said simply.

Luke stepped into the room, his gaze settling on the serum, then on the data, then on Bucky's readings.

"This wasn't just the serum," he said.

Tony frowned. "What does that mean?"

Luke's voice remained calm.

"My blood… it's accelerating evolution beyond prediction."

Howard's jaw tightened. "Uncontrolled?"

Luke didn't hesitate.

"Yes. the evolution is random so do is the granting ability."

That silence carried more weight than anything else.

Tony rubbed the back of his neck. "…That's bad, right?"

Luke didn't answer.

Because at that exact moment—

The alarm screamed.

Sharp. Violent.

Red lights flooded the lab.

Tony was already moving. "Perimeter breach—"

Howard turned toward the screens.

Luke didn't move.

He already knew.

"They're here. Hydra"

The cameras activated, feeds flickering to life.

And at the edge of the Stark perimeter—

A figure stood.

Not attacking.

Not hiding.

Just… waiting.

Watching.

Bucky lifted his head slowly, something different in his eyes now. Luke's voice was quiet.

"Get ready. you're gonna test your limit in real time."
