Chapter 20 - Title: The Boy Who Never Missed Sunrise

In a small coastal village in Japan, there lived a boy named Ren. Every single morning, before the sun rose, Ren would climb a hill behind his house and sit quietly, waiting for the first light of day.

No matter the weather—rain, cold, or wind—he never missed a sunrise.

People in the village often whispered about him.

"Why does he go there every day?"

"Is he waiting for someone?"

But Ren never answered.

He lived with his grandfather, an old man who rarely spoke but always watched Ren with gentle eyes. One day, unable to hold his curiosity, his grandfather finally asked,

"Ren… why do you chase the sunrise every day?"

Ren looked at the horizon, where the sky was slowly turning orange.

"My mother used to say," he began softly, "that every sunrise is a new chance… a new beginning."

His grandfather stayed silent.

Ren continued, "The day she left… she told me to never miss the sunrise. She said… if I keep watching it, I'll always find hope."

Years ago, Ren's mother had been very sick. Even on her weakest days, she would wake him up early and take him to that same hill. They would sit together, watching the sky slowly change colors.

"See that?" she would say, pointing at the light. "No matter how dark the night is… the sun always comes back."

Those were her last words to him.

Since then, Ren had made a promise—

He would never miss a sunrise.

One winter morning, as snow covered the hill, Ren climbed up as usual. The cold wind was strong, and his hands trembled, but he kept going.

As he reached the top, he noticed someone sitting there.

It was a girl.

She looked about his age, wrapped in a warm scarf, staring quietly at the horizon.

Ren hesitated, then slowly sat a little distance away.

They both watched in silence.

After a while, the girl spoke,

"Do you come here every day too?"

Ren nodded.

"Why?" she asked.

He looked at the rising sun.

"Because… it reminds me that things can get better."

The girl smiled faintly. "I think I needed to hear that."

Her name was Mei. She had recently moved to the village and was going through a difficult time. She didn't share much, but her eyes carried sadness.

From that day on, Mei started coming to the hill every morning.

At first, they barely talked. But slowly, as days passed, they began sharing small conversations… then laughter.

The sunrise that once felt lonely to Ren now felt warm.

One morning, as the sky turned golden, Mei said,

"You know… I used to hate mornings."

Ren looked surprised. "Why?"

"Because I thought every day would be the same… nothing changing," she said. "But now… I feel like maybe something can change."

Ren smiled.

"That's what my mother believed too."

Seasons changed.

Spring came, and cherry blossoms covered the hill. Ren and Mei sat under the trees, watching petals fall as the sun rose.

One day, Mei didn't come.

Ren waited… and waited.

But she never arrived.

The next morning, she was gone again.

Days passed.

Ren felt that old emptiness returning.

But still… he climbed the hill.

Because he had made a promise.

One morning, as the first light appeared, Ren closed his eyes and whispered,

"I'll keep watching… no matter what."

Just then, he heard footsteps.

He turned around.

Mei was standing there, smiling.

"I'm sorry," she said. "I had to leave for a few days… but I came back."

Ren didn't say anything.

He just smiled.

They sat together as the sun rose once again.

And in that moment, Ren realized—

The sunrise wasn't just about hope anymore.

It was about the people who walk with you… until the light returns. 🌅✨
