Chapter 23 - Chapter 23

The afternoon sun cast long shadows across the study room as Bella sat alone at her desk, the usual presence of Master Hiroshi noticeably absent. Her fingers idly traced the edge of a fresh sheet of paper, the silence feeling different without his gentle guidance.

Without any conscious plan, her hand moved to the brush, dipping it in ink and bringing it to the paper. At first, she sketched simple shapes - a mountain here, a river there - but then an image began to form in her mind. Chang Hao's face.

Her cheeks flushed pink as she realized what she was drawing. The strong jawline, the kind eyes that had watched over her these past weeks, the way his hair fell across his forehead when he was tired. The cartoonish lines were simple but captured something essential about him.

She worked quickly, adding details like the scar on his left eyebrow from a childhood sword fight and the small dimple that appeared when he smiled genuinely.

The sound of Bella's body hitting the floor echoed through the quiet corridor outside. Guards stationed at either end of the hallway exchanged worried glances before one of them rushed toward the study door.

"Your Majesty!" the guard called urgently as he pounded on the heavy oak door. "There's been a noise from inside Miss Bella's room!"

Chang Hao's head snapped up from the imperial scrolls he'd been reviewing in his private chambers. He set down his brush immediately and rose to his feet.

"What kind of noise?" he demanded sharply, already moving toward the door with long strides.

"Sounded like something falling heavily," the guard replied nervously. "And then silence."

Chang Hao's heart pounded as he reached the study door and threw it open without waiting for an answer. His eyes immediately found Bella's crumpled form near the floorboards, her small body motionless beside the tea tray she'd apparently knocked over in her struggle.

"Bella!"Chang Hao crossed the room in three quick strides, his boots clicking against the wood as he knelt beside Bella's still form. His hands shook slightly as he rolled her gently onto her back, searching frantically for signs of injury.

"Guard! Get Physician Tanaka here now!" he barked over his shoulder while checking for a pulse at her neck

His fingers found a weak but steady heartbeat beneath her pale skin. Relief flooded through him momentarily before panic returned when he noticed the blurriness in her eyes and the way her limbs were going limp.

"Bella, can you hear me?" he asked desperately, cupping her face with both hands. "Look at me, my love. Stay with me."

Outside in the corridor, boots sounded running down the hall as servants and guards responded to the commotion.

Physician Tanaka's face paled as he confirmed his worst fears, the needle dipped in black ink from the spilled tea confirming his diagnosis. "Your Majesty, she's been poisoned. The tea - it contains datura extract."

Chang Hao's hands clenched into fists at his sides, rage flashing in his eyes. "Datura? Who would dare poison my Empress with such a dangerous substance?"

Tanaka quickly began mixing antidotes from his medical kit while issuing orders to the guards crowding the doorway. "Bring clean water immediately! And someone fetch physostigmine, a red vial in my office - now!"

The emperor scooped Bella into his arms carefully, carrying her back to her bed as if she weighed nothing. His voice shook with controlled fury as he addressed the senior guard.

"Find out who delivered this tea tray," he commanded coldly. "Check every servant who works in this wing of the palace. Question them individually until someone confesses."

Physician Tanaka worked frantically beside the floor, his skilled hands moving with practiced efficiency as he prepared the antidote. "Her symptoms are advancing quickly - dry mouth, skin rash, muscle twitching. The datura must have been a potent concentration."

Chang Hao watched helplessly as Bella's once-peaceful face contorted with subtle spasms. His jaw clenched as he noticed the way her lips were cracking and flaking.

"Someone bring water immediately!" he shouted at the guards who were now filling the room. "And find out who served her this poison!"

Tanaka carefully administered the physostigmine injection into Bella's arm, his brow furrowed with concern. "This should counter the muscle paralysis effects soon, but it won't reverse all symptoms immediately. We need to keep her hydrated and monitor her breathing closely."

The emperor's voice dropped to a desperate whisper as he leaned over Bella's prone form.

Chang Hao's voice dropped to a desperate whisper as he leaned over Bella's prone form, his own breathing growing ragged with fear. "Breathe, my love. You have to breathe for me."

He watched helplessly as her chest rose and fell in shallow, irregular gasps, each breath seeming more labored than the last. The rash spreading across her pale skin looked angry and inflamed under the flickering candlelight.

"Physician Tanaka, tell me honestly - will she recover from this?" Chang Hao's usually steady hands trembled as he gently wiped a damp cloth across Bella's cracked lips, trying to soothe the dryness.

"With proper care and the right dosage of antidote, yes," Tanaka answered without looking up from his work mixing more potions. "But we must act swiftly. Datura poisoning can be fatal if left untreated for too long.". He carefully carries Bella to his private infirmary. After making sure she is placed carefully onto the bed.

Chang Hao's voice cracked with emotion as he continued stroking Bella's feverish cheek, his thumb brushing gently over the rash marring her porcelain skin. "Here you are again, my foolish dragon - fighting for your life while I sit here helplessly watching."

He leaned closer, his forehead resting against hers as if trying to share some of the heat radiating from her body. "The gods have a cruel sense of humor, don't they? Bringing you into my world only to watch you suffer at every turn."

His fingers traced the line of her jaw carefully, avoiding the cracked lips that were now bleeding slightly from the dryness. "I promised to keep you safe, to build a fortress around you where no one could hurt you. And yet here we are - poisoned in your own study because I failed to protect you even for an hour."

Physician Tanaka approached the bed with another vial of antidote, his expression grim but professional.
