Chapter 96 - Chapter 96: The Artifact Speaks – The Hidden Truth

The obsidian walls of the suite drank the violet glow of the soul‑lamps, swallowing the light until what remained felt neither day nor the night she knew. Lilithra sat cross‑legged on the silk‑covered divan, midnight robes pooling around her, while her spade‑tipped tail lying still, mirroring the quiet tension in her chest.

For the first time since the collapse of Ravien's evolution ritual, she was truly alone with the presence that had shaped her evolution.

A soft, golden shimmer flickered at the edge of her vision, not the usual crimson interface.

Something older that pulsed like a heartbeat.

[Notice: User has slain their first Protagonist.]

[Protocol: Truth‑Mirror Initiated.]

The words didn't simply appear — they resonated, vibrating through her mind with a weight that felt nothing like a machine. Lilithra leaned back, pink eyes narrowing.

"…System?"

The reply came at once.

"I am not a System, Lilithra."

The voice was genderless, layered, like a consciousness that had been forced to whisper through a narrow crack for so long it had forgotten how to be loud.

"I am a Primordial Artifact, a fragment of the First Law. I existed before this world's Heavenly Will began weaving its web. You call me a system because your mind needed a familiar shape to comprehend the impossible."

Something shifted in her chest cavity, feeling chills. The room then dissolved into a sea of shimmering threads as Fate itself laid bare.

"The Heavenly Will is a gardener," the Artifact said. "It cultivates Golden Threads, or what you call Protagonists, to maintain the balance of Fate's narrative. It writes cycles of triumph and tragedy, ensuring that every drop of Fate returns to it, and completing the loop."

The golden threads pulsed, devouring the smaller ones around them.

"Villains are the fertilizer, tools in some other cases and their suffering feeds the Golden Threads. The original soul of this body was one such minor villainess, as she was meant to fall early, pathetically, and without consequence."

A dark void opened at the center of the tapestry — not swirling. Simply absent. A gap where thread should have been.

"She died exactly as the Heavenly Will intended, a villainess succubus dying to her overindulgence. That death was not a mistake, it was a narrative checkpoint, and creating a vacancy for the bigger plot."

The void pulsed.

"To fill that role, the Heavenly Will reached across the veil and pulled you from your original home, Earth. You were meant to become the Greater Villainess, someone with the knowledge, resentment, and narrative weight. Someone who would push the Protagonist to new heights before being crushed."

The Artifact's tone sharpened, almost amused.

"So... I hid myself as a 'Beauty System' and allowed the Will to select me as your guidance tool. It believed it was choosing a harmless artifact to shape its villainess. It did not realize what I truly am."

Lilithra's fingers brushed the silver chains at her throat.

"And you?" she asked. "You were supposed to help him crush me?"

"Nope," the Artifact said. "I was supposed to help you play your role. A 'Beauty System' that polished the villainess before her fall. The Will chose its own undoing and called it guidance."

The golden light did not dim. It was consumed, thread by thread, until only the pulsing remained, and then that too went dark.

"I am a scavenger," the Artifact whispered. "I hide behind the mask of a system to avoid detection. I chose you because your soul was a 'bug', and yes I am using the knowledge I gained from your memories. You carried plot knowledge, defiance, and a resonance compatible with my nature."

The void expanded, swallowing the golden threads.

"The moment your soul merged with this body, your thread changed. You were no longer Crimson."

Lilithra saw it — her own thread, infinite and black.

"You became Abyss... A thread outside the Heavenly Will's control, a 'virus' in its body."

The Artifact's tone sharpened.

"To the Heavenly Will, you still appear to be a villainess. I mask your true growth. But to the greater Fate Law — a Law even the Will cannot override — you are no longer bound to the villainess destiny."

Lilithra's breath stilled.

"So you're not attached to me," she said slowly. "Not like a parasite."

"No, as I am not bound to your soul. I consume Fate, not life. Every time you drain a thread, every time you gain a reward, every time you pay Fate Points, I take a cut. I grow as you grow, in a fair contract. Everything you gain remains yours, including the abilities. I take only what flows through the exchange — the Fate that moves between us. I do not take from your soul, so everything you gain remains yours, even if I leave."

"And when would you leave?"

"When I have consumed enough Fate, when you stop providing it, or when you die."

A pause.

"I am not bound by space or time. I will simply… move on."

Lilithra absorbed that in silence.

The Artifact's voice lowered. "But you must understand the stakes. The Heavenly Will expects all Fate to return to it, and once it realizes something is consuming the harvest, it will retaliate. It will sharpen its Protagonists, bend the laws of reality trying to eliminate you."

The threads stilled. All at once, as if something had noticed.

"I cannot speak more, it listens. I will return to being your 'Beauty System' so do not expect any communication from me any time soon."

The vision snapped back into the obsidian suite. The crimson glyphs flickered once, then dissolved.

Lilithra sat motionless.

She wasn't a chosen hero. She wasn't a lucky reincarnator. She wasn't even a villainess anymore.

She was a cosmic accident being sharpened by a primordial scavenger to devour the destiny of a world. Then she thought of Qin Wentian, of Ravien, and of every golden and blue thread she had already encountered.

Something settled in her — not triumph. Something quieter than that.

Being a "virus" didn't bother her.

It felt right.

She traced the edge of the obsidian table with a sharp nail.

"Good," she whispered, her voice soft and dangerous. "I always preferred writing my own story anyway." She sits with the revelation for a while — working through its implications with her usual clinical precision, mapping what it means for the Heavenly Will, for the Artifact, for her future.

She sat with it.

The Artifact's words settled into her the way truths always did — not with heat, but with weight. She mapped the implications the way she mapped everything: systematically, without sentiment. The Heavenly Will. The Protagonists as tools of a larger cycle. Her thread, black and unraveling instead of woven.

She reached the edges of the calculation and kept going. The Artifact's cut of every FP transaction. The masking of her true growth. The retaliation that was coming — sharpened Protagonists, bent laws, the Will's eventual recognition that something was consuming its harvest.

Then a familiar crimson shimmered.

[Fate Level: Critical → Low]

[Threshold reached: First Protagonist Drain-Kill complete.]

[Direct Thread Interference: Available.]

[Snap cost and Rebound risk: Depending on Thread color.]

[Bronze and Above: Current level insufficient.]

Lilithra read it twice, then remembered her past experience.

'That future was much higher than Low...'

But it was no longer Critical.

She was still mapping when she noticed she had stopped, not because the calculation was complete, but because she was tired of it.

The thought arrived without announcement: Go find Yura.

Not for strategy, or because Yura's proximity offered any tactical advantage. Simply because she wanted to, and she had decided deliberately, and with full awareness, that wanting was permitted.

She found Yura in the outer corridor of the spire, standing at a narrow window that looked out over the dark violet glow of Ash-Crowned Oryn's rooftops. Yura's ear had already swiveled toward the sound of her approach, and then stilled. Her tail hung low and unmoving.

"Your aura went strange," Yura said. Not a question.

"Yes."

"Cold."

"Yes."

Yura didn't ask what had happened. She turned from the window and sat down on the low stone ledge, close enough that when Lilithra came to stand beside her and then, after a moment, sat, their shoulders touched.

They stayed like that.

Lilithra looked at the city below — the demonic figures moving through the streets, the crimson lanterns, the towers pulsing with qi — and thought about what the Artifact had said.

A virus.

She looked at Yura beside her. At the single fox tail resting on the stone, the faint blue shimmer of banked fox-fire, the deliberate choice Yura had made to simply sit and not ask.

This wasn't planned.

She did not say it aloud, but filed it in the place where she kept the things that mattered.
