Chapter 3 - The Path You Choose

Miss Laura pointed toward a boy sitting at the back." Come up here and Introduce yourself to us", She said still pointing.

He had long pink hair, stood about 5.5 feet tall, with green eyes. He wore an earring on the middle of his lower lip and another on his left ear. Slowly, he walked to the front of the classroom.

"My name is Ivan Blue, from here—the Amerion Federation—and I want to be a backup ranger… because I can't really fight," he said before walking back to his seat.

"Are we not going to talk about our powers?" asked Viktor.

"No need to. In your first lesson, you will be tested if you can survive this school with your powers," said Miss Laura.

"How are we going to be tested?" asked Viktor.

"Like I said—with your powers. And if you want to know, then stop interrupting the introductions so the test can begin. Come up here and introduce yourself now," she said, glaring at him.

Viktor clicked his tongue and walked to the front.

"My name is Viktor Dragunov, son of Dragunov Drury the Great, from the Volgravia Empire. And I will be the greatest ranger in the world who will end every monster that will show up in this world and—"

"That's enough. Next. We don't have all the time for you, Mister Great," she cut in, pointing at another student.

One after another, students stepped forward, introduced themselves, and returned to their seats.

Then—

It was Kanji's turn.

He stood up and walked to the front, calm but serious.

"My name is Kanji Katsuro, from the Japonis Shogunate… and I must become a ranger at all cost. Thank you."

He spoke with a firm tone, his eyes briefly shifting toward Barb before he returned to his seat.

For a moment—

The room fell silent.

Then Miss Laura's voice broke through.

"Last—Barbara."

Barb smirked darkly at Kanji's words before standing up from her seat and walking to the front.

"My name is Tunde Barbara Afolayan, but I prefer to be called Barb, from the Nigerion Dominion… and I'm going to be a ranger for the fun."

Without another word, she turned and walked back to her seat.

Miss Laura stepped forward.

"Since that's everyone, those who are going to be rangers should come out and stand at my right. Those who want to be enforcers stand at my left. And for those of you going for backup ranger, stand in the middle," she said, pointing in each direction.

They all stood up and began moving toward their chosen paths.

"Are you all ready?" Miss Laura asked, scanning them.

"Yes, ma," they all replied.

"First, I need to tell you what is the work of each power job—starting with rangers," she began.

"For the past twenty years, portals have been appearing all over the world twice a week. And behind those portals lie monsters of different kinds. Some are bigger than buildings. Some can even fly—use powers like us. The dangers they bring are far greater than you imagine. As a former ranger, I know what it's like. So the people rely on rangers to protect them from these monsters with their lives. You rangers have a long way to go."

She turned slightly.

"Then, as for you backup rangers—don't think you will be far from danger. Your job is to see that everyone is out of danger. You are to protect those the rangers cannot see or reach. And in that process, you may come across danger—or even have to fight small monsters that come out of the portals. So take note, Ivan Blue—you have to learn to fight."

Ivan stiffened.

"And you enforcers—your job is to protect the common people from power users like you and me. There are power users who use their abilities to oppress others. Some cause fights. Some steal from innocent people. Some of them are even stronger than rangers. So you will be in danger as well."

She paused, letting her words sink in.

"But most of all, rangers take the most risks. That doesn't mean the rest of you won't."

"Is there any job for power users with no risk? Because I don't want to fight," Ivan asked nervously.

"No. These are the only jobs for power users. But you can become a teacher after working in one of these departments," Miss Laura answered.

"I'm going to die…" Ivan muttered, looking defeated.

"Not now," Miss Laura said flatly.

"Since I have given you all a brief explanation on your future dreams, it's time for your first lesson. Now, I want you all to form a line in the same position as your jobs."

"Rangers on the same line on the right?" asked Kanji.

"Yes. Enforcers on the left line, and backups in the middle line. Now follow me," replied Miss Laura.

She turned and led them out of the classroom.

They walked through the academy halls and stepped into the open school field—

Where other students were already waiting.

The real lesson…

Was about to begin.
