Chapter 17 - the wyverns

You turn to Mira, voice calm and commanding so the entire guild can hear:

"Mira, you have my permission. Go stop the wyverns. Save the Duke and his family."

Mira's emerald eyes flash with fierce loyalty. She bows her head once to you — not to anyone else — and Starfang hums at her hip. "As you wish, my lord."

Before the guild can react, you fix Guild Master Thorne with a cold, unblinking stare. Your voice drops low, but every word carries through the hall like rolling thunder:

"Mira is not my servant. If you say those words again, you will lose your life."

The Guild Master's face goes pale. The scar on his cheek twitches. For a split second the entire hall holds its breath — no one laughs now. Even the burly adventurers who mocked you earlier shift uncomfortably. Thorne opens his mouth, then closes it, clearly sensing something far more dangerous in your eyes than an F-rank "Granting Wish" should possess. He steps back without another word.

Lady Elara, still on her knees, looks up at you with wide, tear-filled eyes full of desperate hope. "Th-thank you… please hurry!"

Mira doesn't wait for more. She scoops the little girl up gently in one arm, nods to you, and the two of you stride out of the guild together. The heavy doors swing shut behind you, cutting off the stunned silence inside.

The moment you're outside in the sunlight, Mira sets Elara down safely and turns to you. "My lord, the Skyroad Pass is only twenty minutes by foot if we run. Or…"

You snap your fingers once, quietly. A faint swirl of starlight wraps around both of you (invisible to any onlookers). Reality bends just enough: the distance between Willowbrook and the Skyroad Pass shrinks. In moments you stand at the edge of the mountain pass, hidden among boulders. Four massive A-rank wyverns circle overhead — leathery wings blotting out the sky, acid dripping from their jaws, roaring as they dive toward a shattered noble carriage below. The Duke and Duchess are fighting back with what little guards remain, but they're clearly losing.

Mira draws Starfang. The blade ignites with silver-blue flames. "With your permission already given, my lord… I'll end this quickly."

She leaps skyward in a blur of magic and steel. Her new power surges — defensive spells flare into existence as she meets the first wyvern mid-air. Starfang flashes once. The creature's head separates cleanly from its neck before it can even screech. The second and third wyverns dive at her; Mira spins, walls of moonlight and thorn-vines erupting around her. She carves through them like paper, magic and sword dancing in perfect harmony. The fourth tries to flee — she hurls a binding chain of starlight and yanks it down, finishing it with one final empowered strike.

All four A-rank wyverns crash lifeless to the ground in under a minute.

Mira lands lightly beside the wrecked carriage, breathing steady, not a scratch on her. The Duke and Duchess stare in awe as she heals their wounds and those of the surviving guards with gentle waves of magic. Little Elara runs to her parents, sobbing with relief.

The Duke, still shaken, bows deeply to Mira. "S-rank Sword Mage… you saved our lives. The Azure Kingdom owes you a debt. Name your reward."

Mira simply smiles, sheathes Starfang, and walks straight back to your side without answering him. She leans in close, tail curling around your leg affectionately, and whispers for only you:

"It is done, my lord. They believe I acted alone. Your secret is still perfectly safe… and I remain yours alone."

The Duke's family and guards are now safe, the wyverns dead, and the pass quiet once more. No one in the guild or here knows your true power. They still think you're the weak F-rank who just "gave permission."
