Chapter 23 - Chapter 23: The King’s Shadow and the Panther Goddess

The Weight of the Crown.

The morning light of Asgard broke over the golden spires, clean and cold. Loki gently disentangled himself from Lulu's embrace; there was too much to be done today. The fleet's victory banquet was scheduled for noon, and while he was the architect of their success, he knew his presence would only stiffen the necks of the veterans.

"Are you truly not joining the feast at noon?" Lulu asked, sitting up and reaching for a piece of fruit.

"If I go, the men will spend the whole time watching their posture instead of their pints," Loki said, adjusting his emerald tunic. "I'll show up on the second day when the formalities have melted into true celebration. This afternoon, I'm visiting Mave. I want that Heart-Shaped Herb potion finalized before the week is out."

Lulu nodded, her eyes soft. "Then I'll tell them the Prince is tireless—working in the shadows so they can feast in the light."

Loki smiled, raising a glass of morning juice to her. "To my dearest, most radiant, and sharp-witted Lady Lulu."

"Ha! To us."

They left the royal quarters together, their conversation light but layered with the subtext of their shared ambitions. As they walked toward the Golden Palace Stables, Lulu kept glancing at him, her brow furrowed in thought.

"You've changed, Loki," she said suddenly, stopping in the middle of a marble corridor. "Or rather... you've filled in. It's like a canvas that finally has its colors."

Loki raised an eyebrow. "Is it the new boots? Or did I grow an inch in my sleep?"

"It's not physical," Lulu insisted, stepping closer. "Back there, the way you spoke to the guards... every gesture felt broad. Convincing. You have a quiet power now. A royal demeanor that doesn't need to shout to be heard."

She paced around him, her merchant's eye dissecting his posture. "Odin has a majesty that feels like a mountain—crushing and ancient. But you? You embody a different kind of kingship. It's magnetic. What has happened to you while I was away at the stars?"

Loki touched his cheek, pondering her words. The environment changes the temperament, he thought. Spending months solving the people's problems, hosting the clover-banquets, and secretly tempering his soul with the Eternal Flame had rewritten his internal code. He was no longer playing the part of a Prince; he was becoming the foundation of the realm.

"I've just been listening to the people, Lulu," he said quietly. "Bestowing favor, guarding the territory. It turns out, if you treat a kingdom like a garden, it starts to bloom."

Lulu's eyes sparked with a fierce pride. "Then I'm waiting to be your Queen. If you dare to abandon me once you have that throne... Hmph!"

"I swear it, my Queen," Loki whispered, pulling her into a brief, intense embrace. "I'm not going anywhere."

The Green Mountain Cave.

The stables of the Golden Palace were a sprawling complex, a veritable high-end zoo for the most exotic beasts of the Nine Realms. Loki and Lulu bypassed the warhorse paddocks where Sleipnir's descendants grazed and headed toward the Green Mountain Cave—a specialized habitat carved into the cliffside.

The air inside was cool, lit by glowing pearls embedded in the ceiling and bronze braziers that cast a steady, warm light.

"Greetings, Your Highness," Saunders, the lead beast-master, said with a bow. "The new arrival is... unique. Very obedient, though she has developed a taste for cooked lamb. She refuses raw meat entirely now."

"She's a lady of refined taste, then," Loki noted.

They entered the dining cavern. Behind massive Uru-reinforced bars, the Black Panther sat with regal poise. Her fur was a deep, velvet midnight, and her eyes were twin vertical slits of burning gold. She was a mutation of the highest order, her muscles corded with a strength that felt unnatural.

"Open the cage," Loki commanded. "And leave us."

The keepers hesitated, then obeyed, retreating to the tunnel entrance.

"Meow," the panther voiced. She didn't move, her golden gaze fixed on Loki.

Lulu tapped the bars as the door swung open. "Come on out, Bastet. Don't tell me you've grown fond of the cage already."

The panther snorted—a sound of pure derision. To Lulu's shock, a voice echoed in her mind—a cool, feminine tone that sounded bored. 'Bad woman, this goddess has eaten fifteen sheep. I am in no mood to move.'

"Did she just call me a 'bad woman'?" Lulu blinked. "And did she call herself a god?"

Loki stepped forward, his hand glowing with a faint green light as he touched the panther's paw. "It is the power of the mind, Lulu. We are communicating through thought-forms now."

He felt the panther's consciousness—it was sharp, ancient, and surprisingly dry. 'So, the one with the clever eyes finally speaks,' Bastet thought.

Loki noticed a shimmer in the air. Through the Eye of the Sorcerer's passive sight, he saw three golden threads connecting the three of them. Bastet wasn't just a beast; she had a latent psychic sensitivity that had been triggered by the Heart-Shaped Herb.

'I am Bastet,' the panther projected, her golden eyes narrowing. 'The Black Panther Goddess of the jungle. I have heard the humans whisper of Asgard for centuries—the dwelling of the sky-gods. When the bad woman offered me a place here, I knew my destiny had finally arrived.'

"A homebody goddess," Loki mused, a smirk playing on his lips. "I am Loki, the God of Wisdom. I don't require you to hunt or fight unless the city is in peril. You will be my mount for the grand celebrations. What are your terms?"

Bastet tilted her head, her tail twitching. 'I want to taste this "endless mead" the sailors sing about. And I want a quiet place to stroll after I eat. Other than that, the cave is far superior to a damp jungle floor.'

"Mead and a garden. Done," Loki agreed.

The deal was struck. Asgard had gained a new guardian, one who was quite content to spend her days napping in a cave lit by pearls and drinking royal mead.

As they left the cave, Loki disconnected the mental link, feeling the weight of the morning's work. The pieces were falling into place: the fleet was home, the treasure was secured, and his prestige was growing.

"Tonight," Loki said, offering Lulu his arm, "we feast. But tomorrow... tomorrow we start the work that will make us legends."
