Chapter 14 - Rumours and Rain

The trouble started on a Wednesday.

At first, Maya didn't even notice it.

She was walking through the hallway with Lily, carrying a stack of books, when she caught two girls whispering nearby.

The moment they saw her looking, they quickly turned away.

Maya frowned.

"That's weird."

Lily glanced over.

"What is?"

"Nothing."

But it wasn't nothing.

Throughout the day, Maya noticed more strange looks.

More whispers.

More conversations that seemed to stop whenever she walked past.

By lunchtime, an uneasy feeling had settled in her stomach.

Something was wrong.

She just didn't know what.

Then she found out.

It happened during history class.

Her phone vibrated quietly beneath her desk.

A message from Marcus.

Marcus: Don't freak out.

Maya immediately frowned.

People only said that before something bad.

Maya: What happened?

A screenshot appeared.

The moment Maya opened it, her heart dropped.

It was a post from an anonymous school gossip account.

A picture of her.

A picture taken months ago while she was helping unload groceries outside a discount store.

The caption read:

"Looks like Riverside's golden boy is dating a charity case."

Below it were dozens of comments.

Some laughing.

Some cruel.

Some pretending to be jokes.

But every one of them hurt.

Maya stared at the screen.

Her face burned.

Her chest tightened.

The classroom suddenly felt too small.

Too hot.

Too loud.

She quickly locked her phone.

But the words stayed in her mind.

Charity case.

By the time school ended, the post had spread everywhere.

Maya wanted nothing more than to disappear.

She rushed toward the parking lot, hoping to avoid everyone.

But someone called her name.

"Maya!"

Ethan.

She stopped.

He jogged toward her, his expression serious.

"I've been looking for you."

Maya looked away.

"You saw it?"

"Yeah."

Embarrassment flooded through her.

She hated this.

Hated that people knew about her struggles.

Hated feeling exposed.

"Horrible, right?" she asked quietly.

Ethan looked genuinely confused.

"The post?"

"No. Me."

His eyes widened.

"Maya."

She laughed bitterly.

"Come on, Ethan. Everyone's thinking it."

"No."

"They are."

"No, they're not."

"They—"

"Maya."

His voice stopped her.

Not because it was loud.

Because it was firm.

Certain.

He stepped closer.

"I don't care how much money you have."

She swallowed.

"I don't care where you live."

The lump in her throat grew.

"I don't care whether your clothes are expensive or not."

The parking lot suddenly felt very quiet.

Ethan's eyes never left hers.

"You know what I care about?"

Maya couldn't speak.

"You."

The single word shattered every wall she had been trying to build.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

She hated crying.

Especially in public.

But she couldn't stop.

Ethan gently pulled her into a hug.

For a moment, Maya simply stood there.

Then she hugged him back.

The whispers around them disappeared.

The stares disappeared.

The fear disappeared.

For a few seconds, only Ethan mattered.

Only his steady heartbeat.

Only the certainty that she wasn't facing this alone.

Unfortunately, not everyone was finished causing problems.

The next day, Maya was called into the principal's office.

Her stomach twisted the entire walk there.

Had she done something wrong?

When she entered, she found her mother already sitting inside.

And beside her—

A woman Maya recognized immediately.

Mrs. Parker.

The mother of one of the girls who ran the anonymous gossip account.

Maya froze.

"What happened?"

The principal sighed.

"The account has been identified."

Maya blinked.

"What?"

The principal nodded.

"Several students came forward."

Mrs. Parker looked deeply embarrassed.

"My daughter created the post."

Maya's eyes widened.

The woman continued.

"She thought it was funny."

A painful silence followed.

"She's been suspended for a week and will be issuing a public apology."

Maya didn't know what to say.

Part of her wanted to feel satisfied.

Instead, she felt tired.

Just tired.

Her mother squeezed her hand gently.

"We're proud of how you've handled this."

Maya looked down.

For so long she had worried that being poor made her less than everyone else.

But sitting there now, she realized something.

The people who truly mattered had never judged her.

Her mother didn't.

Lily didn't.

Marcus didn't.

And Ethan certainly didn't.

The problem had never been her.

It had been the cruelty of others.

That evening, rain began falling against the windows.

The snow was finally disappearing.

Winter was ending.

Maya stood beneath the covered porch outside her house when Ethan arrived.

Neither of them spoke for a moment.

Then Ethan smiled.

"Feeling better?"

"A little."

"Good."

Rain fell steadily around them.

Maya looked at him.

"Thank you."

"For what?"

"For staying."

His smile softened.

"I'm not going anywhere."

The words settled warmly inside her heart.

Maya knew life wouldn't suddenly become perfect.

There would still be bills.

Still be grief.

Still be difficult days.

But now she understood something important.

Love didn't erase problems.

It simply made them easier to face.

Together, Maya and Ethan stood watching the rain.

And somewhere in the distance, hidden behind dark clouds, spring was getting closer.
