Chapter: 67: No meeting today

Elena

It's been five days since the incident of my almost kidnapping. I and Lily had been at Damien's place. He didn't want us going back to our apartment as he believed that another attack could happen and I wouldn't only be harming myself but also the people around me— Lily, and Jenna.

The guy that attacked me that day was found dead which caused any investigation being carried out to run cold. Priest was still on the job trying to find out who the mastermind was and Damien wasn't planning on letting me out of his sight till he was convinced I would be safe on my own.

Being cared for by him this way only pumped up the butterflies in my stomach. He had been nothing short of sweet—Thoughtful—Attentive. It was like he was making up for every moment he had ever hurt me in the past —whether I remembered them or not.

I decided tonight, I would tell him the truth— tell him that I had all my memories and I knew exactly who he was. I was going to prepare a small dinner for him when he gets back from the ball and then tell him everything.

"Ugh,"

"Watch where you're going," Sophia's voice came in like a screech.

I had had it with her. Whenever we saw she always had an issue or the other or had something vile to say from those lips of hers. She had found out that I was staying at Damien's place and since then her attitude towards me worsened.

"I wouldn't advise you to scream at people like that," my eyes looked at her from head to toe. "We don't employ Banshees in this company," I continued before turning to walk away.

She stared at me as I walked, even from across the room I could feel her dagger stare boring holes through my back.

"You're acting all high and mighty because Damien is backing you…you won't have him for long," she retorted, stopping me in my tracks.

I turned back around to look at her. "Since I have him now I might as well act however I like," I replied in a mocking tone.

Her brows furrowed. "You b—."

My face turned serious as I cut her off. "If another woman can take him away… then I don't want him."

I left her standing there annoyed and headed for my office.

We were supposed to have another meeting concerning the ball in less than an hour, and Damien also wanted to make an announcement at the meeting. I had to prepare so as not to get caught off guard like last time.

Upon getting to my office I saw Ethan standing at my door.

He treated me out, and we had spoken and I was able to clear up the air of misunderstanding from the last time that Damien abruptly took me away from our dinner.

"Ethan, what are you doing here?" I smiled questioning as I unlocked my door and we walked in.

"I came to see you," he replied, dropping into the chair across from me.

"Just to see me?" I gave him a questioning look.

"Can't I come to see my friend," he answered, looking guiltily away.

"With all that stack of folders." I cocked my eyebrow at him.

"Okay fine. I need your help," he replied. "Pretty please," he added, his eyes pleading.

I sighed, rubbing my temples. "You always need my help."

"Because you're good at what you do," he replied with a smirk.

Rolling my eyes, I took the folder from him and began flipping through the pages. "Alright, what exactly do you need my help with?"

He leaned forward, resting his elbows on my desk. "Just a second pair of eyes. I need to finalize these reports before the meeting, and I figured you'd catch any mistakes."

I skimmed through the documents, nodding. "They look fine so far—"

Before I could finish, my phone rang. Barely glancing at the screen I answered. "Hello."

"Is this Mrs. Elena Kingston?" The voice on the other end was unfamiliar.

"Yes, who's this?"

"This is Mrs. Kim from Lily's school. Your daughter fainted during class and was rushed to the hospital. You need to come immediately."

My blood ran cold as soon as my brain processed what she said. "What!"

"How did that happen!? Is she okay?" I questioned, panic gripping me like a vice.

"I don't have all the details yet, but it was during her physical education class." The woman's voice was shaky. "The doctor is with her ma'am," she added.

My fear morphed into anger. "How can you teachers overwork your students to this extent." My voice came thundering.

"No ma'am sh—

"What hospital was she taken to?" I cut her off not ready to hear her explanation.

"St. Avalon Hospital." Immediately I heard her words I ended the call.

I was already grabbing my things and about to set off when Ethan sat up, his expression shifting to one of worry. "What's wrong?"

"Lily," I choked out. " She got sent to St Avalon Hospital—she fainted at school."

His face tightened. "I'll drive you."

I shook my head in disapproval, my mind was racing. "No, I'll take a car. I need you to inform the human resource department of my absence and the team, that I won't make the meeting."

"Elena—"

"Please, Ethan," I cut him off. "I don't have time to go back and forth on this."

He sighed but nodded. "Go. I'll handle it."

I didn't wait for another word before rushing out of the office.
