Chapter 47 - chapter 47: The Rules of Judgment

The countdown did not stop.

Lyra checked her bond mark again the next morning.

99

Exactly one number lower.

Rylan noticed too.

"So… definitely a timer. That's comforting in a terrible way."

Kael was already preparing.

Weapons maintained.

Training increased.

Defensive formations reviewed.

If this was a fight, he would be ready.

But Lyra knew something they were all starting to realize.

This wasn't a fight they could prepare for physically.

The stranger confirmed it.

"I've been thinking about what he said about Seraph."

Lyra looked at him.

"You believe it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Seraph behaved like someone trying to prove something."

That made sense.

Seraph wasn't just enforcing balance.

He was trying to justify his existence.

Rylan sat on the training platform.

"So basically… we're in some cosmic job interview?"

The stranger didn't disagree.

"Something like that."

Lyra looked down at her mark again.

98

"Then what exactly are they measuring?" she asked.

The stranger answered carefully.

"If I had to guess… stability."

Kael frowned.

"Define stability."

"Whether her existence creates more risk than value."

Lyra nodded slowly.

"So they measure if I am worth allowing to exist."

Rylan threw his hands up.

"That is an extremely rude system."

Lyra almost smiled.

But her thoughts were deeper now.

Seraph chose control.

And failed.

So what was the correct answer?

Before she could think further—

Reality folded.

No warning.

No sound.

Just instant transition.

The four of them were no longer in Balance Haven.

They stood inside a massive white space with floating geometric structures. Platforms drifted in the air like pieces of a puzzle not yet assembled.

No sky.

No ground.

Just controlled emptiness.

Rylan looked around slowly.

"Okay… I hate this."

The Collector stood nearby as if he had always been there.

"Evaluation Phase One."

Lyra immediately stepped forward.

"You said 72 hours."

"I said preparation time."

"Preparation for what?"

The Collector raised his hand slightly.

"For understanding the rules."

Symbols appeared in the air.

Clear.

Precise.

Unavoidable.

EVALUATION RULES:

Rule 1: Balance Keeper must demonstrate independent stability.

Rule 2: External amplification variables must be removed.

Rule 3: Emotional dependency reduces qualification score.

Rule 4: Final decision must be voluntary.

Lyra read carefully.

Then asked:

"What is Phase One?"

The Collector answered:

"Separation assessment."

Before anyone could react—

Kael vanished.

Rylan vanished.

The stranger vanished.

Lyra stood alone.

Again.

Her breathing slowed.

But she didn't panic this time.

She had learned from before.

"What are you testing?"

The Collector answered:

"Can you remain stable without them?"

Lyra closed her eyes briefly.

Felt her power.

Still there.

Still controlled.

Still hers.

When she opened her eyes again she said calmly:

"Yes."

The Collector studied her carefully.

"Emotional suppression noted."

Lyra shook her head.

"No."

"Emotional trust."

That answer caused the first visible pause from him.

"Explain."

Lyra answered quietly:

"I am not strong because they stand beside me."

"I am strong because I know they will."

That answer clearly registered.

Because the evaluation symbols shifted slightly.

Her mark changed again.

97

But now there was a small glowing line beside it.

Progress.

The Collector spoke again.

"Interesting response."

Lyra crossed her arms.

"Am I winning?"

His answer was unexpected.

"There is no winning."

"There is only qualification."

Lyra smirked slightly.

"We'll see."

The Collector raised his hand again.

"Phase Two will be more difficult."

Lyra didn't look worried.

"I expect it."

Then he said something that changed the tension again:

"In the next phase…"

"You will be shown the future where one of them dies permanently."

Silence.

Her heart still reacted.

Even if she didn't show it.

The Collector finished:

"And you must choose whether to prevent it… or accept it."
