Lyra did not sleep again that night.
Even after the stars returned, something inside her refused to relax. Her balance power stayed active at a low level, like a heartbeat she couldn't turn off.
That had never happened before.
Normally her power obeyed her will.
Now it felt like it was preparing on its own.
Watching.
Waiting.
That bothered her more than the visitor itself.
Morning came quietly, but Balance Haven felt different. Even the birds that normally nested nearby were gone.
Rylan noticed first.
"Okay… nature running away is never a good sign."
Kael was already checking their perimeter defenses.
"No physical threats."
The stranger was studying Lyra's hand.
"The mark changed again."
Lyra looked down.
The symbol from the night before had become clearer. The scale symbol now had faint circular lines around it, like a seal forming.
And the number remained.
101
"What does the number mean?" she asked.
The stranger answered honestly:
"I don't know."
That alone told her how serious this was.
He usually knew something.
Lyra tried channeling power into the mark.
Immediately the symbol reacted.
Pain shot through her hand.
Not injury.
Warning.
She stopped instantly.
Rylan frowned.
"Yeah let's not press the cosmic self-destruct button."
Lyra forced a small smile, but internally she was calculating.
The voice said Phase Collection begins.
Collection meant one thing.
Someone was gathering something.
Kael asked the question she was avoiding.
"Do you think they are coming for you?"
Lyra answered truthfully:
"I think they are coming to test if I'm worth taking."
Silence followed.
Because everyone understood what that meant.
The stranger suddenly stood.
"They won't attack directly."
Lyra looked at him.
"You sound certain."
"I am."
"Why?"
His expression darkened slightly.
"Because entities that operate at that level don't fight."
Pause.
"They send hunters."
Rylan groaned.
"Of course they do."
Lyra crossed her arms.
"Then we deal with the hunter."
The stranger shook his head.
"If this is what I think it is… this won't be like Seraph."
Lyra's eyes sharpened.
"Explain."
He hesitated.
Then said it anyway:
"Seraph was enforcing balance."
"This is something that enforces order over balance."
That sounded worse.
"Meaning?" Kael asked.
"Meaning they remove variables that don't fit their system."
Rylan translated:
"So… cosmic auditors."
Lyra almost laughed.
Almost.
Then the air pressure changed again.
Not violently.
Subtly.
Like something stepping into the world carefully.
Lyra felt it instantly.
Her power reacted again.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She turned toward the forest line beyond their sanctuary.
Something was walking toward them.
No explosions.
No dramatic entrance.
Just footsteps on grass.
A figure appeared between the trees.
A young man.
Maybe mid twenties.
Black coat.
Calm expression.
Completely ordinary looking.
Too ordinary.
Lyra's instincts screamed.
Danger.
He stopped about twenty meters away.
Looked at the four of them calmly.
Then spoke politely:
"Hello."
Rylan blinked.
"That is not how I expected cosmic danger to look."
The man continued:
"I apologize for the sudden visit."
He looked directly at Lyra.
"Balance Anomaly Lyra… I am your assigned Collector."
Kael stepped forward immediately.
"State your intention."
The man answered calmly:
"Evaluation."
Lyra didn't move.
"And if I fail?"
The man answered without emotion:
"Erasure."
Silence dropped like a stone.
Rylan whispered:
"Yeah… I officially don't like this guy."
Lyra stepped forward slightly.
"And if I pass?"
The Collector tilted his head slightly.
"Then you will be taken."
That was worse.
Lyra's voice became steel.
"I don't belong to anyone."
For the first time…
The Collector smiled slightly.
"That response increases your evaluation difficulty."
Then he said something that chilled even the stranger:
"Your test begins in 72 hours."
"And one of your bonded partners must be removed from the equation."
