Cassius's face went completely still, unable to process what he had just heard.
But only for a moment.
Almost immediately, he snapped out of it, understanding at once why Katherine had said those words.
'She wants me to be her son?' Cassius thought with an expression of pure incredulity. 'How did she arrive at that conclusion? Woman, you have stepsons. Can you not simply choose one of them?'
He genuinely wanted to cry.
"You… you don't want to?" Katherine asked slowly, her voice cracking.
With a wry smile, his face still an inch from hers, he answered. "It is not that I don't want to… but this is far too sudden. And may I ask why me? You could choose one of the Jurish family's stepsons."
"They do not love me." She answered. "They look at me with scorn and contempt, seeing me as a whore who disturbed their family by bearing a bastard child for their father."
