Chapter 395: Love You, Mom
"Embarrass us? You made us transmigrators look good," Ethan murmured.
One man against the entire Marvel world. Plenty of transmigrators didn't have anywhere near that kind of power.
But what Ethan most wanted to know was how to reach Transcendence, and he hadn't seen that yet.
He quietly turned to the next page.
"As for my insights into Transcendence, I can't tell you. If I did, you might make the same mistakes I made."
"Everyone's road is different. The more I say, the more likely I'll lead you astray."
"What I can tell you is this: when your System reaches its final form, it will give you an entry-level method for how to enter Transcendence."
"Are you wondering why I gave you a Friendship System? Not a Sign-In System, or a Slacking-Off System, or a Killing System. Why a Friendship System, of all things?"
Ethan really had always wondered. Why a Friendship System, of all things? Was Chen Ye unable to make any other kind?
Killing things or signing in would have been a lot simpler and easier than making friends.
Honestly, Ethan had griped about the System more than a few times.
He soon found the answer in the letter.
"Truth is, I could've made other Systems too. There are two reasons I made a Friendship System. I'll get to them in a bit. First, let me tell you what I went through."
"After all... I've never had anyone to tell. And even if I told someone, nobody would believe me."
"I won't bother with my memories from before I transmigrated. Those are the same for both of us. Let me tell you what happened after."
"I transmigrated into the Marvel Universe in my own body."
"At first I was thrilled. But once I realized it was the Marvel Universe, I got scared."
"I kept calling for a System. Days went by, and no System ever showed up."
"I despaired. Worse, because I'd crossed over in my own body, I had no identity at all. No papers, no record that I existed."
"With no other choice, I went to Hell's Kitchen. I joined a gang there and trained nonstop, doing things I hated, just to stay alive."
"In those days it felt like I was bound in invisible chains, doing things against my conscience just to buy one more chance at living. Late at night, when everything went quiet, I'd ask myself whether this life was really any better than the old one."
"Sometimes I even longed to go back to the past, even if that was only an impossible dream."
"I envied the lucky transmigrators who fit right into this world, fighting side by side with legends like Tony Stark, or dancing with the beauties of Marvel."
"Me, I could only bury those longings deep down, because I had something more important to do: survive, and get stronger."
"I nearly died more than a few times. Luckily, maybe because I was a transmigrator, I always somehow pulled through."
"After a few years, I'd finally found my footing under Kingpin and become one of his trusted lieutenants. Things were slowly getting better."
"Hell's Kitchen was notorious, a place where every kind of evil went on, and Kingpin was no easy man to deal with. But at least I was doing all right."
"I thought I could keep building my power step by step like that. Then Kingpin died, and Hell's Kitchen became a living hell when the Hand went to war over the Dragon Bone."
"I'd barely had a few good days before Hell's Kitchen was gone."
As Ethan read, he felt as if he were witnessing Chen Ye's journey of blood and tears with his own eyes, feeling all of its deep helplessness and pain.
There was no question: compared to Chen Ye, he had been lucky.
"Still, that's how I got my first real stake. I came away with a piece of the Dragon Bone. I didn't use it directly. Long life meant nothing to me. In the Marvel Universe, power matters more."
"I used that Dragon Bone to buy my way into HYDRA, and I got a super-soldier serum from them. That's also where I met my first love, Wanda."
"My days in HYDRA were the happiest of my life. With Wanda's help, I rose step by step to become a HYDRA commander. We defeated S.H.I.E.L.D., and I got the Space Stone."
"If Wanda had stayed by my side, maybe I'd have been happy to stay in the Marvel world."
"But the good times didn't last. Because of Professor X and Pietro, Wanda decided to betray HYDRA. Then, in an accident, Pietro died at HYDRA's hands."
"Wanda and I broke for good after that. She truly wanted to kill me. And I sealed my heart and locked love away."
"Later, after relentless effort, I killed Wanda and took the Chaos energy inside her. I wiped out every mutant, too."
"I set out alone to roam the universe. To get stronger, I'd do anything."
"Those so-called Marvel heroes: if one could make me stronger, I kept him around for now. If one had no use to me, I killed him. That's how I made it, one step at a time, to where I am today."
"That's also why, in the final war, no one came to help me."
"Honestly, I regret it. All that effort, and in the end I have nothing. I never even lived a good life."
"If I could do it over, I'd want to live properly in the Marvel world. Make real friends. Be like a normal person."
"That's one reason I created the Friendship System. It's my own selfish wish. I wanted to see whether taking a different road would show me different scenery."
"Make lots of friends for me. How does that saying go? 'A just cause gathers many allies; an unjust one finds few.'"
"And all those so-called System rewards of yours? I designed every one of them, and they all come from my power. You didn't really think making a friend gets you their abilities, did you?"
"At my level, what Marvel ability couldn't I manifest? And powers from other anime worlds, too. As long as they don't exceed my own strength, I can manifest those as well."
"So the System can only help you get as strong as I was, and no further. The rest of the road you'll have to walk yourself."
"The other reason is that this Friendship System may be the key to your Transcendence."
"Pretty funny, right? Me, a transmigrator, and I never got to be like the other transmigrators, giving one command and having a hundred thousand heavenly soldiers kneel to welcome the Dragon King home."
"That's everything that happened to me, one failed transmigrator."
"Well, I'll stop here. The One Above All and those other bastards have caught up."
"Other me, take my memories and my hopes, and go write a legend that belongs to you. Remember, no matter how hard things get, don't give up. You're the chosen one, and your possibilities are endless."
"The truth is..."
"I don't want to die..."
"I want to go home... But, oh well..."
"If you fail, I'll see you on the road to the afterlife!"
"If you succeed, remember to go back and see our family. If they're still alive, tell our mom for me: Love you, Mom!"
— Chen Ye. His last words.
