Chapter 85 - Valak

Jester didn't use the mist doors.

The spatial folds in the upper castle were tied to the current master's will — any disruption in the fabric and Hades would feel it instantly. So instead Jester moved through the parts of the fortress nobody used anymore. Spiral staircases cut from raw obsidian, slick and weeping. Iron-reinforced corridors that hadn't seen a guard in three hundred years. Deeper, past the point where the architecture stopped feeling intentional and started feeling like the earth had just grown this way, like the rock had always been here waiting.

The lava-light faded the further down he went. The air changed too — thick, sulphurous, carrying something underneath it that wasn't quite a smell. More like pressure. The kind of cold that doesn't move because nothing has ever disturbed it.
