Chapter 21 - The Weight of a Single Step

The morning air carried a faint chill, brushing gently against the skin like a quiet reminder that the day had only just begun.

Leo walked slowly toward the training ground, his steps measured, his body still carrying the fatigue of the previous days.

Every movement felt slightly heavier.

His arms ached.

His legs felt tight.

Even his shoulders seemed reluctant to move freely.

Yet

he kept walking.

There was no hesitation in his steps this time.

Not because it was easy.

But because stopping didn't even cross his mind anymore.

When he reached the training ground, the usual scene unfolded before him.

Trainees were already practicing.

Some were sparring in pairs.

Others repeated the same movements again and again, their strikes clean, their stances stable.

The sound of wooden swords colliding echoed across the open space.

Controlled.

Disciplined.

Familiar.

Leo stood at the edge for a moment, observing.

But unlike before, his eyes didn't wander aimlessly.

He focused.

He watched their feet.

The way they shifted weight.

The way their bodies moved before an attack.

The small adjustments.

The subtle balance.

He didn't understand everything.

But he tried to notice.

Tried to remember.

Then

the atmosphere shifted.

A presence.

Heavy.

Sharp.

Kael had arrived.

The entire training ground gradually quieted, movements slowing, conversations fading.

All attention turned toward him.

Leo straightened slightly.

Kael's gaze swept across the trainees.

Calm.

Observant.

Then it stopped.

On Leo.

"…Come forward."

Leo stepped ahead without delay.

His body still felt tired, but his movements were steady.

Then

"Ryan."

A voice answered immediately.

"Yes, sir."

Ryan stepped forward, his posture upright, his expression composed.

Leo's eyes shifted toward him.

Something felt… different today.

Not fear.

Not exactly.

But a weight.

A pressure.

Kael looked at both of them.

"You will spar."

The words fell simply.

But the reaction they caused was immediate.

Murmurs spread quietly among the trainees.

Some raised their eyebrows.

Some exchanged glances.

A few smirked faintly.

Leo could feel it.

Their attention.

Their expectations.

Or perhaps

their lack of expectation.

"Take your positions."

Leo stepped forward.

Ryan did the same.

They stood facing each other.

A small distance between them.

But that distance felt much larger than it actually was.

Ryan stood naturally.

Balanced.

Relaxed.

Leo stood

trying to imitate what he had seen.

His stance wasn't perfect.

His grip wasn't stable.

But it wasn't careless either.

Kael raised his hand slightly.

"Begin."

Ryan moved.

There was no hesitation.

No warning.

His body flowed forward, his wooden sword cutting through the air with speed Leo hadn't faced before.

Leo's eyes widened

his body reacted

but not fast enough.

Thud.

The impact landed on his shoulder.

Pain shot through his arm.

His body staggered backward.

His feet struggled to hold ground.

But

he didn't fall.

Ryan didn't stop.

Another strike followed immediately.

This time from a different angle.

Leo tried to move.

Too slow.

Thud.

The force pushed him down.

One knee hit the ground.

A few quiet chuckles spread from the side.

Leo heard them.

Every single one.

But

he didn't look.

He didn't react.

He pushed himself up again.

Slowly.

Unsteadily.

But he stood.

Ryan paused for a brief moment.

His eyes studied Leo.

"…You can stop," he said.

Leo shook his head.

A small movement.

But clear.

"No."

Ryan's expression changed slightly.

Not irritation.

Not mockery.

Something else.

Then

he moved again.

This time

faster.

The strike came straight toward Leo.

Sharp.

Direct.

Leo saw it.

His body reacted.

Not perfectly.

Not consciously.

But

it moved.

He shifted slightly to the side.

Just enough.

The sword passed.

It didn't hit.

For a split second

time felt like it slowed.

Ryan's eyes widened slightly.

Kael's gaze sharpened.

The trainees fell silent.

Leo didn't fully understand what happened.

But he felt it.

That moment.

That difference.

But it was gone just as quickly.

Ryan adjusted immediately.

His next strike came faster.

Stronger.

Leo couldn't react this time.

Thud.

The impact sent him backward.

His body hit the ground hard.

This time

he stayed down for a moment.

His chest rose and fell heavily.

His breath uneven.

His vision slightly blurred.

The sky above him felt distant again.

Familiar.

"…Enough."

Kael's voice cut through everything.

The spar ended.

Ryan stepped back.

Leo slowly pushed himself up.

His arms trembled slightly.

His legs felt weak.

But he stood.

Silence filled the training ground.

No one laughed now.

No one spoke.

Because they all saw it.

That one moment.

That single movement.

Ryan looked at Leo quietly.

"…You moved."

Leo didn't respond.

Not because he didn't want to.

But because he didn't know what to say.

Kael stepped forward.

His gaze fixed on Leo.

"…Do you understand what you did?"

Leo shook his head slightly.

"…No."

Kael paused.

Then spoke.

"You reacted."

A simple statement.

But heavy.

"You didn't think."

"You didn't hesitate."

"You moved."

Leo stood there.

Listening.

Trying to understand.

But more than understanding

he felt something.

Something small.

But real.

Kael turned slightly.

"…That is your first step."

The words settled quietly.

Then

"From tomorrow…"

The air shifted.

Everyone listened.

"…you will join the others."

The reaction was immediate.

"What?"

"Him?"

"Seriously?"

Whispers spread across the ground.

Ryan looked surprised.

The others clearly didn't agree.

But Kael didn't care.

"If you want to survive here," he continued calmly,

"…you will stop standing alone."

Leo didn't respond.

But his grip tightened slightly.

Something inside him shifted.

Not confidence.

Not pride.

But something quieter.

Understanding.

Things were changing.

Slowly.

But undeniably.

Far above

inside the towering structure of the Valencrest estate

a figure stood near a high window.

Watching.

Silently.

Valerian Draven Valencrest.

His gaze rested on the training ground below.

On the small figure standing among others.

"…So this is the boy."

His voice was low.

"…Interesting."

A faint smile appeared on his face.

Sharp.

Unreadable.

"…Let's see how far you can go."

Back on the ground

Leo stood among the trainees.

Not accepted.

Not equal.

But no longer invisible.

And for the first time

he wasn't standing alone.
