After a hearty meal in the mess hall that left quite a few Marines in a state of shock, Goku was led by Garp to the old hero's personal quarters. This would serve as Goku's residence for the foreseeable future.
"For the next while, you'll be living with me," Garp said as he cleared a space on his bed. Despite his status as a Marine hero, Garp's living quarters consisted of a single room. He explained that he had lived there for many years and found changing rooms to be too much of a hassle. Besides, the bed was large enough for two, and Goku would likely move to the Marine barracks once he officially joined the service in a year. Goku, who was used to sleeping anywhere, had no objections.
The two took a quick nap, which was abruptly ended when Garp delivered a "Fist of Love" to the sleeping boy.
"Why are you still sleeping! Wake up right now!" Garp roared.
A few seconds later, Goku was putting on his shoes and grumbling about the bump on his head. Garp simply laughed, calling it a "fist full of love". Goku gritted his teeth, knowing he couldn't beat the old man yet, and followed him out into an increasingly desolate area of Marineford.
Garp led Goku to a deserted dock where abandoned Marine warships were berthed. The scene was desolate, with toppled masts, moss-covered hulls, and tattered flags.
"What are we doing here, Grandpa Garp?" Goku asked.
Garp pointed to a warship with a massive dent in its bow. Then, he pointed to an intact ship on the right. "Your next task is to punch it," Garp instructed. "When you can dent its bow as much as that other ship, then you can cultivate Armament Haki".
Garp explained that to master Armament Haki, one must constantly temper their body. For Garp, the best way to temper his fists was by punching the incredibly hard hull of a ship—a practice that had earned him the title of "Iron Fist Garp".
Goku walked up to the intact ship and threw a punch. Bang!!. He recoiled, noting how hard the surface was. He looked at the other ships, noticing deep dents over a dozen meters high. "Did you make those, Grandpa Garp?".
Garp was about to answer when he sensed someone behind them. "No," a clear, cold voice finished for him. "The one on the left is mine".
Goku looked back to see a very tall man in a white suit walking toward them.
"I didn't expect you to still come here, Kuzan," Garp said without turning around.
Kuzan, also known as Admiral Aokiji, walked up lazily and yawned. He looked at the marks he had left on the warship years ago with a hint of nostalgia, recalling how he and Garp used to hone their fists together at this very dock.
"Well, as you get older, you just want to reminisce," Kuzan said languidly.
Garp scoffed, noting that Kuzan was only in his forties while Garp was over seventy. Goku, curious about the newcomer, tugged on Garp's sleeve. "Grandpa Garp, who is he?".
Garp pouted, clearly not in the mood for formal introductions. "Just a muddle-headed, lazy fellow," he grunted. "Don't mind him. Get back to your training".
Goku suppressed his curiosity, nodded, and turned back to the massive iron hull, ready to begin his journey toward mastering Haki.
