Chapter 4 - The person behind the Secret

Daniel couldn't move.

The person standing across the school field was someone he recognized.

Someone he had seen almost every day since arriving at Westbridge High.

It was Mrs. Thompson.

His teacher.

For a moment, Daniel wondered if his eyes were playing tricks on him.

Why would his teacher be watching him?

She had always been kind.

She had welcomed him on his first day.

She had smiled at him.

But now...

She was standing there silently, watching him like she was waiting for something.

Then, as quickly as she appeared, she turned and walked away.

"Daniel?"

He turned around.

It was Ethan.

"Who were you looking at?"

Daniel looked back at the field.

Mrs. Thompson was gone.

"Nobody."

Ethan studied his face.

"You look like you saw a ghost."

"Maybe I did."

Ethan laughed nervously.

"You're joking, right?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Something told him this wasn't a joke.

---

The next class felt different.

Daniel couldn't focus on the lesson.

His eyes kept moving toward Mrs. Thompson.

She taught normally.

She explained the topic.

She answered questions.

She acted like nothing had happened.

But Daniel couldn't forget what he saw.

At the end of class, students packed their bags.

As Daniel was leaving, Mrs. Thompson called his name.

"Daniel, can I speak with you for a moment?"

His heart skipped.

"Sure."

The classroom slowly emptied until only the two of them remained.

Mrs. Thompson closed the door.

"You've been asking questions."

Daniel stayed quiet.

"About Zara."

His eyes widened.

"How do you know?"

She sighed.

"Because this school has a way of repeating the same mistakes."

"What does that mean?"

Mrs. Thompson walked toward the window.

"When you first arrived here, I hoped you would stay away from the rumors."

"I don't believe rumors."

"That's what everyone says at first."

Daniel frowned.

"Do you think Zara is dangerous?"

The teacher looked at him.

"No."

The answer surprised him.

"Then why does everyone avoid her?"

Mrs. Thompson was silent.

Finally, she said:

"Because people are afraid of things they don't understand."

Daniel leaned forward.

"What happened to Emma?"

The moment he said the name, Mrs. Thompson's expression changed.

"Who told you that name?"

"Does it matter?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because Emma's story was never supposed to come back."

Daniel felt a chill.

"What happened?"

Mrs. Thompson looked at the clock.

"I think you should go home."

"That's not an answer."

"No, Daniel. It's a warning."

---

After school, Daniel waited near the school entrance.

He needed to talk to Zara.

But she never came out.

Students left one by one.

The parking lot became empty.

Still no Zara.

Then Daniel saw something.

A small piece of paper was stuck under his backpack strap.

He pulled it out.

Another message.

Stop searching.

Daniel looked around.

Nobody was nearby.

His phone suddenly rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Hello?"

No one spoke.

Only silence.

"Who is this?"

A quiet voice finally replied.

"You're making the same mistake Emma made."

Daniel froze.

"Who are you?"

The call ended.

---

The next day, Zara was absent.

For the first time since Daniel arrived, her desk was empty.

He couldn't explain why, but he felt worried.

At lunch, he found Ethan.

"Have you seen Zara?"

Ethan shook his head.

"No."

"She isn't here."

"I noticed."

"Does that happen often?"

Ethan looked uncomfortable.

"No."

Daniel sat down.

"Then something is wrong."

Ethan lowered his voice.

"Daniel..."

"What?"

"There is something you need to know."

Daniel waited.

Ethan looked around.

"The night Emma disappeared, Zara wasn't the only person there."

"Who else was there?"

Ethan hesitated.

"Lucas."

Daniel remembered the boy from the library.

"What about him?"

"Lucas was Emma's boyfriend."

Daniel was surprised.

"Boyfriend?"

"Yeah."

"Why didn't anyone mention him?"

"Because after Emma disappeared, Lucas left school for months."

"And now he's back."

Ethan nodded.

"Exactly."

Daniel thought about everything.

Zara.

Emma.

Lucas.

The warnings.

None of it made sense.

---

After school, Daniel decided to visit the old dance hall.

The place was behind the school building.

Most students never went there anymore.

The doors were locked, but one was slightly open.

That was strange.

Daniel pushed it carefully.

Inside, the room was dark.

Old decorations from the winter dance still hung on the walls.

He walked slowly.

This was where everything changed.

This was where Emma disappeared.

Then he heard something.

A sound from the other side of the room.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Daniel walked forward.

A shadow moved.

He stepped back.

Then a voice spoke.

"You shouldn't be here."

Daniel recognized it immediately.

"Zara?"

She stepped out of the darkness.

Her face looked worried.

"What are you doing here?"

"I could ask you the same thing."

She looked around.

"We need to leave."

"Why?"

"Because someone wants you to find this place."

Daniel frowned.

"What are you talking about?"

Before she could answer, a loud noise came from outside.

Someone had entered the building.

Zara's eyes widened.

"Hide."

Daniel didn't argue.

They moved behind a large curtain as footsteps came closer.

Someone walked into the hall.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Daniel held his breath.

The person stopped near the center of the room.

Then they spoke.

"I know you're here, Zara."

Daniel looked at her.

She looked terrified.

The voice continued.

"And I know you brought Daniel."

Daniel's heart dropped.

They knew his name.

The person stepped closer.

Then the lights suddenly turned on.

Daniel saw the face.

And he couldn't believe it.

It wasn't Lucas.

It wasn't a stranger.

It was someone he trusted.

Someone who had been helping him since his first day at Westbridge High.

Someone who knew all his questions.

Ethan.

He stood there calmly, as if nothing was wrong, his expression unreadable, almost distant, like he had been waiting for this moment far longer than Daniel could understand. Zara stepped back in shock, while Daniel felt his stomach drop as every warning suddenly made sense, and Ethanycalm gaze suggested this confrontation had been planned from the very beginning, long before Daniel ever arrived at Westbridge High without knowing anything at all.
