Chapter 7 - Chapter 7

'Admiral.'

It lingered in the pause that followed.

Luffy stopped rubbing his head.

Even Garp, who had gone back to picking his nose as if none of this concerned him, had gone just still enough to show he was listening carefully.

Zaraki drew a slow breath.

Marineford.

There was no denying the value of it.

If strength was what he wanted, then Marineford was the fastest path available.

East Blue had nothing worth comparing to it. Marineford meant skilled fighters, proper training, and enough monsters to keep him from rotting away in boredom.

For someone carrying the Kenpachi template, that was not a small temptation.

Still, the first thing out of his mouth was, "Sounds like a pain."

Bogard's brow shifted almost imperceptibly.

Garp stopped mid-pick.

"Ranks. Rules. Orders. Old men sitting in offices talking about justice while everyone else does the fighting." Zaraki let out a breath that was almost a laugh.

"It sounds exhausting."

That was clearly not the answer they had expected.

Then his eyes moved past Bogard and settled on Luffy, who was still sitting on the pier with both hands pressed to the bump on his head.

The edge in Zaraki's expression eased a little.

In his previous life, he already knew how this family's future ended if nothing changed.

He knew what happened to Ace.

He knew what that war left behind for Luffy.

And he knew Garp, for all his noise and violence and impossible expectations, still carried those two boys in the only way he knew how.

Zaraki had eaten enough of the old man's senbei to owe him at least one decent choice.

"I don't care about justice," he said at last. "But I'll go to Marine Headquarters."

Now he looked directly at Garp.

"If I leave those two idiots alone, sooner or later they'll run straight into something they can't handle. Before that happens, I'm getting strong enough to do something about it."

He paused, then added, "And if I need a Marine coat to keep an eye on them, fine."

For a moment, the whole pier went quiet.

Then Garp exploded.

"You ungrateful little brat!"

He lunged forward so suddenly that the already-damaged planks groaned beneath the force of it.

"What kind of reason is that? I drag you into the Navy and your first thought is using it to babysit those two fools?"

Bogard moved immediately and caught him around the waist before the punch could land.

"Vice Admiral, please calm down. His reason doesn't matter since he agreed anyway."

"Doesn't matter? Listen to him! He's talking like Marine Headquarters is some kind of family convenience service!"

"Then let the instructors deal with his attitude after we get him there," Bogard said without raising his voice.

"If you scare off a recruit with this level of potential because you lost your temper for five seconds, Fleet Admiral Sengoku will have your head."

"Grandpa's really angry," Luffy announced from the ground. "Zaraki, now would actually be a good time to run."

Garp twisted around and roared, "You be quiet too! Once your brother's gone, you're joining the Marine as well!"

That only made Luffy clutch his head harder and whine louder.

Eventually, after several more seconds of struggling, Garp stopped trying to hit people.

"Fine," he grumbled. "If the kid's got the guts to say yes, then we'll take him."

A second later his mood swung in the complete opposite direction.

"Makino!" he shouted toward the village. "Bring out the good booze! Today's worth celebrating! My grandson—no, my adopted grandson—is finally leaving that bandit life behind!"

Zaraki watched him in silence, then lowered himself to sit on the edge of the pier.

The movement made the fatigue in his body settle even deeper into his bones, but he ignored it and looked down at the reflection trembling in the water below.

Joining the Marines in order to interfere with fate was not exactly a normal plan.

Even so, the more he thought about it, the more sense it made.

Marine Headquarters was one of the few places in the world where someone like him could grow quickly without fumbling around blindly.

There would be people there strong enough to teach him, pressure him, and force him to improve.

There would also be access to information and authority he would never get by drifting around East Blue alone.

And if that path also gave him a chance to keep this family from breaking the way he already knew it would, then the choice was even easier.

"Zaraki."

Bogard approached again after Garp wandered off in search of alcohol.

He adjusted his tie, restoring some of his usual composed image, then stood beside Zaraki and looked out across the sea.

"Now that you've made your decision, I'll speak plainly."

Zaraki said nothing, so Bogard continued.

"What you showed today was impressive, but against the true monsters of the Grand Line, it would not be enough. At the moment, all you really know how to do is force power outward. You can produce destructive results, but you can't control them properly, and you don't yet understand the systems of power that matter once you leave this sea behind."

The wind off the water cooled some of the ache in Zaraki's arms, though not enough to matter much.

"Haki," he said.

Bogard nodded.

"Haki. Observation. Armament. Powers that let a fighter sense, harden, and strike beyond what the body should normally be able to do." He tapped the hilt of his sword lightly with one gloved finger, then shifted his gaze toward Luffy, who was still muttering complaints while rubbing the swelling on his head.

"Let me ask you something," Bogard said. "Why do you think Vice Admiral Garp can hurt that rubber boy?"

Zaraki followed his line of sight.

The bump on Luffy's head was still there, bright red and absurd.

Under ordinary logic, a blunt strike should not have worked on a rubber body that well.

But clearly, once a person's strength reached a certain level, ordinary logic was no longer the whole story.

Zaraki narrowed his eyes and said nothing.
