Chapter 6 - Changes

Miller set his empty coffee cup on the table. He turned away gesturing me to follow him. He turned his hourglass upside down the action opening a door below the table.

A elevator was there he stepped in I promptly followed him. "Come with me. Seeing is believing afterall David"

I followed him. It felt wrong being in this luxury while the others were probably suffering below.

Miller swiped a keycard on the elevator. We start going down. It took us a hour of going down until we reached the floor Miller wanted.

The temperature was getting colder every floor we passed very cold. My breath pluming into mist.

"This facility is the shield" Miller said his voice was echoing in the small Elevator "After Carcer city fell in 1998. The government wanted to wipe it off the map. But nukes don't close rifts we've found no way to close them. But the people who survived the initial incursion of the monsters got powers that weren't biologically possible. So they were captured but they were studied and we found that their blood can be used to give powers to others thus the creation of the Serum"

As we stepped out of the elevator. It was cave massive enough to have 2 football fields inside it. In the centre of the room was a container.

The container contained a large animal no a animal doesn't look like that it was akin to the nightmare I faced.

It had horns protruding from its head it's eyes were glowing red. He was tall like really tall atleast eleven feets of pure muscle.

It's skin was light red. Four arms that were even bigger and thicker than Ajax's arms.

It's mouth was circular no jaw with hundreds of serrated teeth.

It was motionless frozen in statis but looking at it made me want to scream.

"A class-4 Behemoth" Miller said putting his hand on the container "it took two military battalions and a missile strike to incapacitate it. To not kill it just incapacitate it for a few moments and these are just the footsoldiers the crucible is teeming with them waiting for the next strike."

I stared at the monster it's strength was something i could feel my flames looked like a spark. I felt doubt creep in my mind. Miller sure he was a sociopath who kidnapped children and tortured them. He was a monster.

But what if he was right. What if he was the last line of defense against total annhilation?

"You see now" Miller continued "Why I can't afford to be gentle. I am creating weapons and weapons need to be hammered with strength."

He turned away from the container leading me down to massive catwalk on the other side of the cavern. There was a massive door there a keypad on the side Miller entered a password the doors opened slowly. Revealing a massive arena. The wall was scorched and has deep claw marks on them and standing in the middle was a man he looked around the age of thirty to thirty five.

He was tall built like Ajax. Wearing the same clothes as me and a rigid perfect posture. He was smiling at me cracking his knuckles.

"This is subject 0" Miller said putting his hand on The mans shoulder "His names Silas he was once a great operative who defended against the rifts. But he has grown old so he trains the young saplings like you"

He waved his hand at me. Giving me a welcoming smile.

"Silas" Millers commanded "This is the new recruit. It will be standard training today. Push him until he can control the complex"

Miller walked to a crane elevator going to a room high up in the arena.

As soon as Miller left the arena Silas moved.

He didn't wind up or prepare just lunged at me with unnatural speed.

I barely had time to cross my arms as the punch landed square on my chest. He was stronger than the nightmare that's for sure.

The impact was hard it felt like I was hit by a freight train. I was launched backwards hitting the wall. Leaving a crater there. I tried to catch my breath.

"Get up" His voice boomed as he stood there.

I scrambled to my feet. Spitting blood on the floor. The anger I had been suppressing flared as only one word kept repeating in my head.

"BURN HIM, BURN HIM, BURN HIM"

Silas lunged again trying to kick me this time I grabbed his leg pulling him by the leg. Hitting him with a punch straight in the jaw.

It got dislocated but he didn't even wince he was like those guards.

I roared as the flames erupted from my body covering my left side.

The heat was instantaneous the arena warped from the flames. I released a wave of flames towards him. The flames covered him.

I thought I had killed him.

But as the flame died down.

Silas landed on the ground the uniform wasn't harmed not even scratched. But his skin was completely charred and in some places his body was melting.

He stood there for a moment as the burnt flesh slouched off his body began repairing itself the muscles knitting back together. His body was smooth again it didn't look his body was burnt to a crisp moments ago.

As Millers voice came from a mic "Hyper Regeneration" his voice echoing inside the arena "You can't kill him David. He's a perfect sparring partner. Now David try to control the flames not let it control you."

The next three hours were agony. Silas dismantled me ripping out my limbs but I regenerated them just as quickly. I tried to limit myself to maybe control the power but every time my anger spiked and i released the purple flame.

I had to fight holding myself back. I had to maintain a balance between sanity and insanity

By the time Miller called it off I was soaked in sweat. My knuckles were bruised. Silas looked over me helping me stand.

"You tried kid but it takes time to control the complex"

Miller led me back to the office. Letting the guards escort me to my lavish room.

I walked into the bathroom splashing water on my face looking up in the mirror seeing the face that didn't felt mine anymore.

I walked back into the main bedroom the maid was standing at a corner holding a fresh towel

"Leave me"

"Yes Master" she bowed slipping out the door.

I collapsed on the mattress every time I closed my eyes the mouth of the Behemoth

I sat up burying my face in my hand.

Was I making a mistake? Amy's desperate plea echoed in my mind please don't betray us but she hadn't seen the monster she believes that Miller is a man playing god in a basement. She didn't know we are standing on the edge of an apocalypse.

If the world was really ending... If there were thousands of those things waiting on the other side. Was Miller actually the villain? Or is he the one willing enough to do the horrific things necessary to keep humanity breathing.

What if I burnt this place down and escaped who would stop the demons on the other side.

Would I be saving Amy Ajax and the others only to doom them in the future

The thought made my stomach into knots. My grand plan to be a spy felt small selfish incredibly naive.

The anger in my chest was gone only one thing remained.

Absolute crushing doubt.
