Chapter 53 - Chapter 53: Overthrowing Hegemony

Pulling Mika out of the pile of corpses, Luke observed several of the Four Horsemen of John.

He remembered that cities like this should have specialized barriers to ward off the Four Horsemen of John. As mindless creatures, how could they have entered a human city using any method other than brute force?

Luke asked Lacus which direction these Four Horsemen of John had come from, and then traced the trail back.

After three or four minutes, the trail went cold.

There were no holes or anything similar nearby; it was as if they had appeared out of thin air and then began searching for humans to attack.

"Strange."

Luke couldn't find any new clues either, so he decided to let it be.

After gathering with the other Vampires, Luke asked them what they had been doing in Ikebukuro.

After getting the rundown, Luke felt it was about time to return to Sanguinem.

Krul's energy intake was insufficient!

"Ah..."

Luke looked toward the sound and saw a Vampire who had taken an arrow to the arm. The wound had already turned black, showing no signs of healing.

"Is the arrowhead out?"

"It's out, Lord Luke."

Luke pressed his index finger against the Vampire's wound. Black Demonic Aura followed his fingertip up his hand, invaded his skin, and was absorbed by the demonic sword.

This was also a function of the demonic sword: controlling Demonic Aura.

The Vampire's wound stopped being black and showed signs of healing, though it was clearly recovering much slower than a wound from a normal weapon.

"Thank you, Lord Luke!"

Witnessing this miraculous method, this Upper-ranking Vampire successfully became a fanboy of Luke.

"It was nothing."

René had already woken up and offered a timely reminder.

"We should go. The Imperial Demon Army will likely send more people soon."

Luke nodded and took the lead in vaulting over the high wall, leaving smoothly.

On the way back to Sanguinem.

Lacus insisted on dragging Luke into the back seat, leaving René at the steering wheel.

"Mika, why did you go after those monsters first?"

Luke couldn't help his curiosity and asked.

Mika's mood was much better, but one could still sense that his emotions weren't as rich as before. The scent of human blood must have further stimulated the transformation of his feelings.

"I just wanted to personally take care of those hypocritical humans."

Luke had mostly guessed as much and wasn't too surprised.

Mika just wanted an outlet to vent.

René's driving was very steady—so steady that Luke felt like sleeping.

"René, are you tired? Want me to take over?"

"Don't! Lord Luke, René was slacking off during the entire fight just now, and he was sleeping while Mika was fighting. He's full of energy right now!"

When Lacus heard this, he panicked. Casting aside his drowsy look, he grabbed Luke.

Luke clicked his tongue, feeling a bit disappointed.

Six hours later, the Vampires returned to Sanguinem.

"I'm heading out first, Lord Luke. Take me along next time you go out—of course, provided you aren't the one driving."

Lacus stretched, gave a wave, and left. The other Vampires also exchanged a few words with Luke before departing.

Mika walked up to Luke.

"Luke, I'm going back to change my clothes first."

Luke pulled Mika back.

"Come with me to see Lady Krul first. I'll help you get a house in the Vampire District."

Mika showed the bloodstains on his cloak to Luke and smiled helplessly.

"I'm going to see Lady Krul like this?"

Luke waved his hand dismissively.

"It's fine. Lady Krul likes blood; going like this is just right."

Mika looked at Luke with suspicion.

"But didn't Lacus say that Lady Krul hasn't let anyone deliver blood to her for several years now?"

Luke felt a bit awkward, his arm and neck throbbing with faint pain.

"What does he know about anything? Don't listen to his nonsense."

Mika couldn't win the argument against Luke and had to follow the plan.

Just as the two were approaching Krul's palace, a Lower-ranking Vampire happened to be coming out.

"Lord Luke!"

The Lower-ranking Vampire bowed to Luke and then left after Luke nodded in acknowledgment.

Luke quietly opened a crack in the door and poked his head inside.

Eh? No one's on the throne.

Is she not here?

Luke walked into the Great Hall, with Mika following behind.

"Kru..."

Mika saw Krul standing by the door, right in Luke's blind spot. He was about to greet her but was stopped by a look from Krul.

Luke looked all around, but he didn't look back.

"Huh, Krul's not here?"

Luke only saw Alucard flying in front of the throne.

"Little Ka, where's Krul?"

Alucard looked at Krul behind Luke, feeling a bit lost. He rolled his eyes and didn't answer.

"What's with the eye roll? I've been feeding you for eight years, you know."

Luke suddenly approached Alucard mysteriously and whispered.

"Honestly, are you also dissatisfied with Krul's violent rule? How about this: we join forces and overthrow Krul's hegemony."

Alucard's single small eye widened, his pupil shrinking.

You can't just say things like that! Don't drag me into this!

Alucard was so frightened he became unsteady in his flight.

Luke found Alucard's reaction strange.

"What's wrong with you?"

Alucard's eye darted to the side, not daring to look at Luke.

Luke became even more confused. He checked himself over—nothing weird on him.

When he checked his shoes, Luke froze. His shadow... why was there an extra lump next to it? It wasn't Mika's shadow!

Luke reacted immediately, not turning around.

"Mika."

"Wh-what?"

"If I turn around now, will I see Lady Krul?"

"Uh... yes."

If silence was golden, then Luke had just achieved financial freedom.

"Tell me more about your plan, so I can be on guard."

Luke turned his head and came face-to-face with Krul's smile.

The more Krul smiled, the less Luke smiled. This was a lesson Luke had learned from years of experience.

"Lady Krul! Don't be in such a hurry to deal with me! I have something to report!"

Krul's smile didn't fade. She knew Luke's character well enough; he was never up to any good.

"Let's hear it."

Luke said with great solemnity.

"Um... I gave Mika the wrong blood. He drank my blood."

Krul was slightly surprised. She looked at Mika, who was standing quietly to the side, and nodded. she had suspected as much before.

"If that's all, we can move on to the next step."

"There's more, of course there's more!"

Luke explained about the humans developing the cursed gear booster drug and the Seraph Experiment.

Krul's expression gradually became serious. Serious business came first.
